1. The demo is OK but as with most YouTube videos you don't get the best idea of tone (not the most helpful comment!). I'd personally be interested to hear how those 50 watts translates into volume. Legend has it that valve watts are louder than solid state ones. I want one. http://youtu.be/kwAFAgZF7rc The bass doesn't actually sound that great to me but I think that's the player, his technique is sloppy.
2. The phil Jones big head headphone amp is very clean and hifi (IMO) as is all of their stuff but be prepared to pay for it! The concept of a truly "clean" or "flat response" amplifier/speaker is practically speaking a fantasy. All amplifiers and their preamps react to different frequencies in different ways, as do speakers and speaker cabs. Take into account also your fingers, your pick ups, your strings, your cables, the wood used for your instrument... Add audio interfaces, USB connections, plugins, DAW software and the variables are I practically endless!! Just go with what you like and you can't go wrong 😁 AND uncoloured speakers like those for hifis, PA systems, monitors etc often sound pretty s#%t with bass. IMO
3. I play in probably 10 different bands, wedding, jazz fusion, soul, disco, ceilidh, theatre, etc etc. I could do all of those gigs without a single pedal if I had to (I use a clip on tuner to save space and for acoustic instruments) but pedals add an extra dimension to the music, like a bit of crunch when I use a pick or an octave pedal to add some beef. I only have an octave, overdrive and an envelope filter on my pedal board but IMO that's all that is necessary for bass guitar. My feeling is that the bass needs to keep the foundation solid for keys, horns, guitar, voice, etc to go wild on top, whether that be meldoically, harmonically or timbre-ally (??).
4. Opted to print it all out. Can't find a compatible page turner and there's no point spending the money for one short run. Also, I can add notes, cues etc.
5.
I use the iPad with OnSong for music at church. Nothing as complicated as a score but using a bluetooth pedal to page turn and scroll up and down is a real boon - I'd say pretty much essential. If you invest in something like an AirTurn pedal I doubt that you would regret it!
The Airturn is the best option for portability and price but it only works with iPad 3 and above, I have an iPad 2 so it's off the cards. Everything else is £65+ and bulky (by comparison)
6. I looked through the score and there are quite a few instances where I wouldn't be able to turn the page (on iPad or with paper) without stopping playing. I'm looking into page turners but I don't know if it's worth the investment as there's no guarantee of more work
7. I'm playing in the pit for a panto in December. The MD has sent me the parts in an email and said I'll need to print them off but I have an iPad with ForScore so in my mind that seems a much easier way to read through the show and to save a small tree (or a bush) in the process. However, I've never played a show with my iPad so I wondered if anyone out there had and if they'd recommend it. Thanks
8. I'd recommend Louis Bellson's Modern Reading Text in 4/4. It has every possible permutation of rhythms in 4/4 from the very basic quavers and crotchets up to highly syncopated semi-quaver rhythms. In my experience you learn the notes pretty quickly, but learning to play rhythms at a glance takes much more practice. I also read somewhere that you can fluff the notes/pitch and most people won't notice but if you get the rhythm wrong everyone will notice.
9. My name sake is correct, it is a Streamliner 900. I'd be curious to hear the One10 with something more 'hifi' like a Tecamp Puma, a TC or Markbass
10. The bass you like will always work best. but you will need to look into string gauge and set up if you're doing lots of tapping, sweeping, solo-y stuff.
11. Bass needs to be felt, not heard. And you don't feel twang 😜
12.
What is the action like between basses?
This would have been my initial reaction, in my experience this has the most affect on hand fatigue after technique, which, given the problem only affects one bass, isn't the issue. A badly cut nut will only affect the first 3-4 frets and is more difficult to correct if done badly/unnecessarily. And as said above, flats are stiffer and require more effort to play anyway.
13. I paired the One10 with my super compact last night in a pretty big function room, probably 50 feet long. It sounded HUGE!!!
14. I've only had the cab a few days but I've already used it on a gig, a recording session and a live video recording. As you can see from the first picture, it is very tiny! For scale, in the third picture the rig is on one of those ubiquitous IKEA stools and is about the same height. SOUND Its been compliments all round about this amp/cab combination. In the recording session, through a very nice microphone, the sound was something like Chuck Rainey's work on Aja.It has an overall vintage sound so less top end then you would get from one of Barefaced's 12 inch speakers and plenty of bass and low mids. If you're after sparkling highs for that cheesy fusion slap tone then this cab won't do it. But it was never intended to. I used the cab for a live video recording and the band leader quipped "where is all that bass coming from?" when listening back. I have rehearsed in that room before where they usually have a 4x10 (nmot going to say the brand but not an expensive one!) and this was easily as loud and audible against, keys, drums, guitar and 3 brass. SIZE/WEIGHT I bought this cab because I needed something that was small, light and loud for my local gigs where backline isn't provided. This means I can get around on public transport carrying my guitar on my back, cab in one hand and my pedal board and amp in an IKEA bag in the other. Even easier if I don't need my pedal board! I even managed to walk home while very intoxicated on wednesday night/thursday morning without taking a rest. CONCLUSION This is a fantastic solution for small gigs where you have PA support and rehearsals. Most venues will be too big for this to fill on its own but realistically most cabs can't fill most venues on their own!. Its easy to carry and has a great vintage sounding tone - though I haven't tried any other amps so it may be versatile than I'm able to discern. Highly recommended!
15. Went and bought myself a Barefaced One10, which turned up this morning. I played one on my visit to the workshop so I knew I'd like the tone, much more vintage than the 12s, a bit less top end but still plenty of bass. It's also plenty loud, I'm using a Streamliner which is putting out about 500w which the cab is handling with not bother, the overload light hasn't even come one! I've got some recording and a gig tomorrow and some other stuff next week so I'll do a more thorough review then. L
16. I was lucky enough this Thursday to go and visit the Barefaced bass workshop in Brighton. It's smaller than I imagined it would be but far more exciting! Alex couldn't have been nicer showing me all the machines and cabs being built (some that I'm not allowed to talk about) and explaining how things work and some ideas he has for new cabs. I even got to play on a few different ones, namely their 2x10 and the new 1x10 as well as the super twin (2x12). There really is a huge tonal difference between them all, very vintage thumpy thing going on with the 2x10 and more clarity in the 2x12. The new 1x10 is a fantastic little cab, tons of volume, tone and outright "balls"! Regrettably I forgot to take any pictures...
17. Hi guys, I'm looking at buying a double bass from thomann - it will be the cheapest model as I'm a beginner and have a limited budget - and they offer to set it up before shipping. However I don't know any of the language or words used to describe aspects of a double bass set-up. Is there much crossover with electric bass? I would probably be playing more pizz than arco (certainly to start with) if that makes any difference. Thank L
18.
Sounds like it's probably not even Velcro, but a cheap imitation. Get yourself to the shops & buy some proper stuff for the job.
Having looked at the tick closely I don't think it would be possible because the Velcro is sown to an outer skin which then has an inner padding sown on the inside so you'd have to remove the outer skin to replace it. I considered replacing it with pop fasteners (I don't understand why any premium product would even use Velcro!)
19. I'll drop to £500 for basschatters befor is out it out to eBay.
20. Current asking price is £550 (can't seem to change price/trade value). I bought it new in September 2010 and it was made in Germany. Postage has not been factored into the asking price but is negotiable.
