  1. Not to get too much into a nature/nurture debate but from reading several books on the subject of talent, motivation and learning methods the only factor separating the so called 'naturals' from others is hours put in to their chosen subject and enjoyment of it - which encourages more hours put in. Personally I have played several other instruments, I started on guitar but have also spent time playing mandolin, piano, double bass, singing and drums. That "natural" feeling I have with bass is, I think, more to do with having spent countless hours with it rather than some affinity I was born with. My step-father assures me that I did not sound good when I first started playing!
  2. Not much experience with double bass but I went amp less for a few gigs over the last month and I hated my sound and my playing, I vowed never again.
  3. Hi all, bit of a moany post but I don't do them very often so grant me one. Most of the original bands I've been in have come about through gumtree and all have petered out fairly quickly (if they got going at all). Am I going about it the wrong way? Do I just pick the wrong people or should I stop trawling the net and just wait til a meet people in real life? Cheers guys
  4. I've known Siphilips (I think that's his username) for about 5 years, I actually didn't know he was on BassChat until last year, he's not very active here. I went to see monarch with... His ska band (sorry :S) a while back when I was picking up the relay bass. I'm always surprised how few bass players I know, online and in real life.
  5. Here is the body all cut and carved, all done in one day apparently!
  6. After a year of lusting and saving I finally put a deposit down a couple of weeks ago. No pictures as yet as I'm still to choose the piece of wood for the body. The specs are as follows: Alder body Natural finish Single P pick-up Rosewood board Tort pickguard Passive volume/tone controls Mono M80 L
  7. The weddings/functions I do are always 4 hours with a one hour break included. Sometimes longer if the client pays. It makes the typical 30 minutes for original gigs fly by! At pubs we're booked for 2 hrs 45mins and take 15-30 minute break.
  8. We were gigging in Aberdeen on Friday (which was fairly pants but they did have a pick & mix) and stayed over, had some beers in the room afterwards, the lunch and a kick about in the car park the next day. We played a wedding at a distillery near Huntly - about an hour north of Aberdeen - last night, which was great. The bride and groom we're really nice, they offered us a room to get changed in (normally we have to find a toilet), the buffet was amazing, barbecued prawns, ribs, burgers, smoked bacon rolls, Lorn sausage. The crowd were fantastic, up for most of the night, getting compliments all round. And at the end the groom gave us a box of whiskey - I looked it up, they're about £50 a bottle! It was all a bit emotional towards the end as it was our drummers last gig with us after 3 years before he goes to Abu Dhabi.
  9. The screw is unscrewed as far as it will go (none left protruding) so a shorter screw won't help unfortunately. Might have to be a new string, which is a bugger because I use flats and I can't recall anywhere selling individual strings.
  10. I'm dropping from standard E to low C, like Will Lee does. My plan had been to get the double stop lever and it set for low D and low C but that doesn't seem possible now
  11. I've just installed an Xtender onto my Clover (GB7 style tuners)very pleased with it... except that it won't drop to a low C! It goes 90% of the way there and can't get any lower, even more frustrating it stops just a fraction sharp of a low C. Does anyone know if there is a way to extend those extra 10cents to low C?
  12. All sorted, got the letter saying how much I owed them and where it was. Only an extra £15
  13. Ah bugger. Is the USPS tracking number still valid with Royal Mail or will they have assigned their own?
  14. Hello all, I ordered a hipshot Xtender from America at the start of May and they gave me delivery date of 30th June (Monday). What's confusing me is that on eBay's tracking page it says 'delivered' even thought it's not. Has anyone else encountered this when ordering from overseas?
  15. I play a lot of big hotel function rooms without PA support - our PA is guff - so I need to fill a lot of space! I do fine but it'd be good to have the headroom. The reason I'm thinking of a double midget (gen 2) stack is for the footprint on stage.
