i wish i could recommend DR low riders, but mine last about a week before i snapped the E (!) and D strings. Probably had a dodgy set, but its put me off getting them again. Been looking at these, any opinions? my '57' Vintage Icon V4 P bass I bought it new, and have added the following features: Fender 10 hole gold anodized scratchplate, customised to fit the bass by me. Black plastic thumbrest JV Squier Precision pups, complete with earthing plate and cloth wires ala 57. Bridge pup cover from later 60's/early 70's, possibly fender but probably jap, nicely pitted and discoloured. Neck pup cover, probably similar age and similar heritage, equally pitted and discoloured. Currently fitted with Status Flatwounds, but i alternate between daddarrio nickle rounds too. Lovely bass. Not had too much experience with other P basses, only ever played cheap p's and the standard Fender MIM and USA models in the shop, but for me this one outplays all of them Still toying with fitting a maple board neck to complete the 57 image, but we'll see.

i sold my stingray 5 with status neck purely because it was ridiculous to have a £1k bass for the bedroom.
I'm going to try to come to this and hopefully might be able to arrange some sort of convoy from Bristol. I will bring my US Vintage '57 Precision blondie. I will contact Shockwave, joegarcia and Mr. Foxen to see if they're interested
Fine!
Goddamnit. No-one is disputing that. but would he sound *equally* good on a 40 quid bass with bad intonation, and warped neck, crappy pots and crackly socket?
Because of course, this thread is about using 'bad' cheap basses.....

Might be able to make this, can't commit mind, theres a chance i might not be in Bristol come november. If so, il bring my Vintage P and a couple of pedals.
Guys! Some very interesting debate here and lots of opposing views - please can we chill out just a tad and I know b*llocks is a minor swearword but can we keep the lid on it a bit please!???? Anyway, we are VERY lucky as players to have such a plethora of choice when it comes to basses both cheap and expensive, we should be celebrating this!! Nick
Sorry about that, perhaps 'absolute rubbish' would have been more appropriate
You owe it to your audience (if you have one) to only play the best. If they've paid in to see you rock out do you really want them to think you're a band of tight-fisted wierdos, that they've given you money and you've spent it on a new conservatory or a nice cardigan instead of a fancy bass? Hell no! That's not rock 'n' roll. That's not even jazz. They want to see you rock, rock hard and would you cheat them out of that by playing some cheapo piece of crap? I should hope not. The audience comes first and that's why I buy expensive basses. Shame on you cheapo lovers, won't you consider somebody other than yourselves for a change?
My apologies, but what a load of bollocks. If anything, playing a £2k bass is the exact opposite of Rock and Roll. I do get the feeling your just baiting though, as you surely can't actually believe in what you typed?
I'm just wondering, could a G&L trib do Bongo? On the other hand could a G&L trib be considered cheap? Cheaper than a Bongo yes but 4 times the price of one of these miracle Westfields. Ugh. At the start of this thread I thought I knew what a cheap bass was and likewise an expensive bass. Now I don't. There's progress for ya.
Although i have never played a g&l trib, i have never played anything that has got close to a Bongo. If it didn't look the way it did, it would be my dream bass. Awesome bit of wood. The stealth one almost makes me ignore the toilet shape, but not quite

My pedal [s]board[/s] floor, basically the Tonefactor Hell siblings, bit of EQ and a beaten looper. Fun times.

for £600 odd? Surely that is terribly overpriced??
You ask why buy something 'posh' after stating that you have compared your cheapo P-bass with a USA P-bass. First off, I love P-basses, but would not call a USA P bass posh. If I wanted something to tinker with I'd buy a P-bass (I did, and it was fun) but a real posh bass sounds infinitely more complex, has more clarity, better playability, doesn't look like a generic bass, and won't fall apart after a year of use. A P-bass is a P-bass, yeah the cheaper ones don't sound as good, and the more expensive ones are more reliable, but at the end of the day, a P-bass sounds like a P-bass. Not a bad thing by all means, it's a classic sound that I love. I wanted the incredible sound of the Bongo with the 4band EQ, 18 volts, neodymium magnets, massive humbuckers, insane looks and superb feel...tell me how to get all these things by tinkering a sh*tty old westfield and I'll do it (don't wanna spend more than £50)
i think your last point might miss the point of the thread, as of course there is not a cheap alternative to a Bongo, but there is to a Sadowsky NYC P bass
It's not about price, but about finding the right instrument for you.
The comment that should end all arguments. If the bass you picked up in the shop played and sounded better than any other in there, why should the price or brand effect your decision to buy it? I think the biggest problem is people thinking they have £1000 or w/e to spend on a bass, and so they must spend as much of it as possible. Many of said people never pick up a bass under £200 in the shop with this in mind. And also, i feel that the fact that you want the 'better' bass to play and sound better, it could overpower what the actual reality is All my opinion, of course.

Weight doesn't bother me in the slightest. If its balanced, then its all good. Mine weighs around 8lb.

just fitted a set of status flats to my p, fisrt experience i have ever had with flats. I love them Very surprised at how different they feel, and how much easier they seem to play. They will certainly be stayin on for the time being, i could be tempted to go for some TI's though...
dunno how some of you guys play with such low action, i cant play a bass without really digging in Vintage icon v4, 45-105 standard tuning 1mm 3mm 3mm Medium i would say, although my technique doesn't really accommodate for any lower
Just strung on some status flats roughly the same guage. Made some adjustments so slightly different 1mm 2.5mm 2.5mm -

interparcel -2 f***ed up collections on the last 2 occasions i have used them. Its a shame because they have been so good in the past, but their customer service over these failed collections was just rubbish, and i have every reason to believe it is the way the liase with the courier companies, rather than the couriers themselves.
