Here's my angle - hope it's useful...You're in a band, playing the instrument you love. You've had a great time, by the sound of it, over the last year playing you music you largely enjoy. Savour it and try not to let the imperfections sour the scene. Right, I'm off to sit on a a lotus leaf for a bit

It looks like something you'd get for beating an end-of-level boss in Zelda

Gig bags for me, usually something like a Ritter with a reasonable amount of padding. Being able to carry a bass on my back makes things so much easier IMHO. Just watch your extra headroom !* *Especially on the up escalator at Highbury & Islington tube - I swear they have a bit sticking out just to snare basses

Vibrating Ampeg PCB, save me from madness.

Yes, rock solid. Update: The nylon washers tamed the vibration a lot, they could only go on the top of the board as there was a grounding pad on one of of the stand-offs. Still a slight noise, but much more ignorable. Huzzah. However, I've decided that the amp needs a decent service. It's working and sounding great, but by the looks of it it's not been touched in 25 years, so I'm dropping it off for a thorough check-up thus week - something that my maintenance skills aren't really up to. It's Trace Elliot fun for a short while, whilst it's having it's holiday Thanks for the help folks ! -
Well spotted! Mine had a very similar fault - the switch only selected two of the available options, and a check with a multimeter did show only two output resistances, not three.* Glad you got it sorted...they do have a lovely sound. Neck was a bit chunky for me, so mine's on permalend to a old bass playing buddy who was without a bass. (*I had to explain Ohm's Law to GuitarGuitar to get them to stop saying it didn't have a fault and accept the return 🙄 and get one that did work !)

An aside: One barrier to me using multi-fx/modelling boxes is my eyesight. I have to switch glasses/remove them to read, so adjusting anything via a screen is a pain, either by PC or screens on pedals on the floor. I just juggle glasses all the time ! Sitting just using a screen is fine, but mixed stuff is hard. Knobs on traditional pedals are just easier for me.

I was all lined up to audition to play in performance with Glenn Branca. But this was during my drinking years, so never got it together, made my excuses and blew it out. There are many, many regrets from this time in my life, but of the musical ones, this one still pricks, and pricks deeply. So it goes.

Vibrating Ampeg PCB, save me from madness.

Oh yes, mind did too...like a substation ! I found a folded piece of thin card on top of the transformer provided just the right amount of shimming between it and the chassis to tame it a touch. Silly idea to mount the transformer to the PCB rather than the chassis IMHO - I reckon it's physically noisier and eventually the stress ruins the PCB. Mine's pretty much an ornament now, as the tracks round the transformer are in such a bad state. -
Hmm, it doesn't look as heavy on spheres and pipes as Russian space hardware usually does, but who knows ? Maybe it's for lunar basses?

Ah, but isn't the mystery enticing ?

Well played 👍

Your favourite 4 string fretted jazz bass player.

Joe Osborn Why ? Just listen to this...possibly the most sublime piece of bass playing I've ever heard. The sound, the phrasing...perfect - the bass yearns and aches, just like the song. -
That's solid gold cryin' country right there. Nice one. 😢

My favourite guitarist is bigger than your favourite guitarist, so nuuuuurgh ! -
Good point, thanks 👍 GG have been very slick so far, so this may be a chance for them to redeem themselves. They said it could be about a week, so hopefully I'll get a shout after the weekend. I'm not getting too excited - between @lowregisterhead 's and others comments, the fit and finish can be, um..variable (the one on GG's website has dodgy pot holes ! - 50-50 chance I guess !), and I'm not throwing 1200 quid at a bass with 'Chibson' finishing. See how we go !

Yes, exactly what they told me Well, I paid the deposit - I've had some 'fun' returning things to them before (in truth I'd rather not deal with them but it seems Hobson's choice) so this is a way of me trying the bass without expecting any hassle. At least this deposit is refundable - I spoke to Andertons and they told be they could get one in, but it was a 'non-refundable' item ! I live in London, so popping to the Camden branch is no problem.

I'm hopefully going to be trying out an EHB1500 in the next week or so (if the retailer can track down the two they claim to have in stock 🙄 ), so a bit late, but thanks for the detailed review...all things for me to look out for.

Who's finally happy with their rig?
ahpook replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
My only real criteria for a good sound is (was) 'can you hear me at the back ?' If it's a yes, then my sound is perfect. If I can hear myself, then all the better -

Couldn't find my washers, but I raided Mrs. Pook's bike stash which has a generous assortment of nuts, bolts and washers for her bike renovations. I'm going to see how I get on with sandwiching the board with nylon washers. I can test it without putting the chassis back in the enclosure (which is a boon as it's not an easy thing to shift around) ...fingers crossed ! -

I'm going to give it a go ! I'm just hunting for a small bagful of washers I know I have somewhere - small bag, not the tidiest of workspaces -
I've tracked down the buzzing sound thats been bugging me (a polite understatement) when I play my V4B at reasonable home volume - it's the back edge of the the preamp board. The board is supported by 3 nuts secured by star washers onto threaded stand-offs set in the chassis (they're a bit loose as I'm mid-fiddle), and the unsupported spans are about 8" long. The back of the board is about 4mm off the chassis. My plan is to reseat the board and retighten the pots to see if I can make it sit better, but failing that....any ideas ? The buzz is right on G. ( G...buzz, G....buzz, G....buzz. Ahpook screams in Lovecraftian horror) Some silicone/neutral cure/sealant stuff, mid span ? Thin washers between the board and the standoffs ? Any ideas would be gatefully received 👍
