Some of Sonic Youth's stolen kit is still turning up then

Side benefit of this thread - Mrs. Pook and I listened to a couple of CDs we hadn't listened to in ages last night, most enjoyable.

C'mere.... (Hug and gentle pats) ...I feel for you, I do. (One of the benefits of being a librarian was the expectation of your colleagues being quiet !)

I'm not glad you have a similar bugbear, but glad I'm not the only one ! (If that makes sense !!)

I'm thoroughly envious of people who can blot out extraneous noise and concentrate. If I can even hear the slightest hint of conversation or music then I can't concentrate.

Most of the music I listen to comes from the radio. I have Radio 3 on during the day as it's the radio station that has the least talking. I can't abide DJs talking all the time. In some ways I think R3 plays the widest range of music of any station I've come across. When I need a change (or when they lay the opera on too thick), I'll change over to whatever my foreign language station du jour is. Currently it's DubaiNow, it used to be a French language station. I'm no polyglot, but the chatter us easier to ignore if you can't understand it. As for recorded music, I go through patches when I'll put albums on (almost never individual songs - I listen to the whole album, not bits of them), or decide to buy some music to check out something new, but it's usually bought 2nd hand. I don't use Spotify or any streaming service like that. One thing worth sharing - I find it very hard to concentrate on anything else when I actually listen to music (or hear conversation) , I certainly can't read, so it sort of limits when I can enjoy it. I used to listen to a lot more music when I was younger, but not as much now. So it goes.

Looks fantastic ! Superb work. -
When the Dimension pickups are switched to humbucking, are they coils wired in parallel or series ?
-
Yes, it didn't solve it for me...it still felt very unbalanced.

I had a T-bird, one of the PRO-IV models It sounded great but I found the ergonomics to be so much of an issue that I sold it. I couldn't cope with the neck dive or the distance to the 1st fret, and the overall lack of balance made it a sod to play. I know I'm in a minority as lots of folks cope with or get round the balance in various ways, but I just couldn't. It was a shame because it sounded really good and I really wanted to get on with it. I'm 5'8" and slightly built, if that's of interest.

Jamming on bass and just 'knowing' the chords
ahpook replied to julietgreen's topic in General Discussion
Can I say I like the phrase 'slave to the stave' whilst making it clear I have no opinion whatsoever concerning that argument. -
I don't really have a 'toolset', I have a selection of household tools, some of which get used on my basses and guitars. In fact the only thing I keep separate are a bunch of allen keys and small screwdrivers in an old glasses case (so Mrs. Pook doesn't nick them for her bike maintenance ) and a 12" metal ruler so it doesn't get greasy like my other metal rulers that I keep in the shed. I have some feeler gauges, but I was given them by my dad and I think I've used them twice. Soz Dad ! Neck stand ? I use a small pile of paperback books and a bit torn off an old towel. Suits me fine - I mainly do my own set-ups and I've never felt the need for more. Each to their own of course.

Sounds less like musical appreciation and more like Pokemon to me. -
Not to my tastes, I prefer the biscuits to be honest.

Hi Franchment Ok, so it sounds like you're after a P-bass but with that bit of extra definition that a P-J combination gives you. My first thought would be to try something along the lines of a Musicman-style pickup, but perhaps not in the traditional bridge position. I don't have much experience of the P-J setup, so perhaps see what other suggestions pop up - you've certainly narrowed the choice down a bit. Has your luthier got any suggestions ?
-
Yes, me too.
-
A good starting point would be to think of the types of pickup that you know get near the sound you like. What kind of basses and pickups do the bassists in the bands you like use - you mentioned Sublime and Cake...what do their bassists use ? There's so many styles and makes of pickups available, it would help to narrow things down a bit ! After that I'd be thinking about choosing single-coil or humbucker in terms of picking up background noise.

Jamming on bass and just 'knowing' the chords
ahpook replied to julietgreen's topic in General Discussion
When I do jam with people it's largely familiarity with what 'goes' with certain chords and progressions that helps me. I don't think I can recognise intervals and chords that easily, but as has been mentioned above, I watch what the other folks are doing and try to remember that a jam isn't about showing off how good you are, it's about playing together, so if you're keeping it simple but still taking part you're still jamming. Nowt wrong with roots and simple stuff whist you get into what's going on. Also I'm never afraid to ask what people are playing either. It's not a competition, it's collaboration.
