1. That's a great looking bass, sadly I already have 3 fretted 5 strings and can't possibly justify a fourth. But it looks awesome.
2. Here's a quick pic of my collection of abused and misused ... L-R: Music Man Stingray 5 Iceni Zoot Funkmeister Yamaha TRB 5 Stuart Spector Designs NS94 Double bass of unknown origin Full details on my blog
3. I had a bunch of lessons with JakeBass (off of here) really nice guy and a very good teacher. If you're in the South East I'd look him up.
4. DR280 - very brave for a first build, but looking great so far.

Shuker.

I play upright as well as electric, I was just a little surprised that 35" felt different. By no means am I saying the OP shouldn't get a 36" I can really see the logic in it especially if tuning to Bb - just think it's a good idea to try one first.
6. I've heard back from him and we've been trading emails. It would be fair to say that his English is better than my German We've started talking about design and what not, they won't be cheap, but not so much more than a set of stock Nordstands (although using the word stock for Nordstrand pups seems a little unfair)
I would recommend playing a bass with the same scale length to see if it suits you first. 36" scale is pretty huge.
Definitely, I've just had a 35" made and (wrongly) thought my other basses were 35's. The difference is noticeable, I'd think 36" would feel huge.
8.
There's not a lot there for Google translate to work with! They do look rather nice though... If you look under the 'impressum' link you'll find an e-mail address - you could try dropping the a line and see if they have a UK distributor perhaps?
Done
9. Has anyone experience of Bassculture pickups? They're list of users seems very impressive, and I love the look of these, and (looks wise) I think they'll be perfect for a project I'm planning, but I'd like to know more. Trouble is the website looks like this and even with Google translate there's not a lot I can make from it.
10. Looking good, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by how loud the 100w Laney will be using the Jacks.
11.
Well the Thunderbird had a 34.5" scale mahogany neck - mahogany is lighter than rock maple but is still very strong. It's also very stable.
Cool. I've always fancied a bass with a mahogany neck (my dad has a mahogany necked guitar and it feels fantastic), but had previously been told it wasn't possible. Interesting stuff. Sorry for the thread divert I'll let you get back on track.
12. Aren't most of those short scale?
13. I heard that mahogany couldn't be used as a bass neck as it wouldn't be strong enough. Is this incorrect, if not what have you done to strengthen it?
14. Well it's a small pedal and it's about 18 months old so I assume it's the smaller version, like this (not the actual pedal)
15. Behringer EP2500 Power Amp I've been using this to power my PA but as I know have my shiny HK rig it is surplus to requirements. Of all the Behringer stuff I've used this is the one bit that I think is really well built, sounds fine. In very good condition, apart from one scratch to the paint work across the top of it. "2 x 1,200 Watts into 2 Ohms; 2,400 Watts into 4 Ohms bridged operation 2-channel, parallel or bridged mono operating modes for flexible application Independent limiters for each channel offer dependable protection against distortion Precise signal and clip LED indicators to monitor performance Selectable low-frequency filters (30 Hz or 50 Hz) remove distracting infra-sound frequencies Professional connectors, compatible with Neutrik Speakon connectors, and “touch-proof” binding post loudspeaker outputs enable secure operation Balanced XLR and 1/4" TRS inputs Connection option for extra amps in parallel operation Ultra-reliable Toshiba/Fairchild high-power transistors High-current toroidal transformer for absolute reliability and lowest noise emission “Back-to-front” ventilation system including air filter with automatically adjusting fan speed for smooth operation Independent DC and thermal overload protection on each channel automatically protects amplifier and speakers" I paid £150 for it in May, so £120. You'll likely want to collect this given the weight.
16. DOD FX25 Envelope Filter I've had this pedal for years, but haven't used it once since getting my Q-Tron. I'm sure you all know what it does - a funky envelope filter, when I bought it I was under the impression that it was the one Flea used on Sir Psycho Sexy, but I don't know if that's true or not anymore. Anyway in gigged condition, works fine, no box or instructions, but I'll throw in a battery Call it £35 = p&p Electro Harmonix SwitchBlade A pedal with an awesome name that does something incredibly mundane. It does flexible channel switching, i.e between two basses, or two pedal boards, I'm suppose even two speaker cabs. I used it to create a little loop with my electric bass on one, and my Upright going into an EQ pedal on the other. Worked fine but I quickly realised that I'll rarely be in that situation again as it was a one off dep gig. Gigged once, still in the box and in mint condition. £15 + p&p Korg AX30B I've also got this old school multi effect in not very good not condition, it was gigged a lot in the late 90's and shows it. It sounds good but has an intermittent problem where every now and then (often about 2 - 5 mins!) it just crashes. 46 memories (16 user programs and 30 presets). 27 effects and EQ settings. Built in tuner. Aux input and headphone socket. If you know about electronics then you may be able to fix it. I think it would make a good pedal for a beginner looking for something to have fun on, with some great synth sounds, and I think quite a good dynamic processing section. Probably doesn't compare to Korgs more recent offerings. No power supply, but can use a normal Boss one. One recently went on Ebay for £46, but given the condition and fact that this is barely working call it £5 + p&p? I'lll take some pics if people are interested.
17.
Good choice with the option to string through the body and the Dimarzio Ultra J's - I have the same in my Copper OW
Out of interest what strings are you using on it, I'm not sure what strings I'm going to be able to use that are35" plus through body.
18.
Beautiful and very tasteful. I would never have thought of a clear scratchplate, but it works really well.
Thanks dude, it's actually a smoked perspex rather than completely clear, so it's transparent grey in light - looks great - Mikes Idea I was expecting just black
19. Over the last few months Mike Walsh from Iceni basses, mostly famed for his Zoot bass, has been building me a bass. The model he’s been making for me is a “Funkmeister” his take on the classic Jazz bass shape. When working up the spec for the bass Mike was really responsive to my desire to not have something to OTT, instead I wanted a ‘players’ bass that I could be out gigging with every week, but still retain a few subtle boutique touches. It's come out really nicely - just a black jazz at a glance, but those in the know will see all the subtle touches Specifications: • Iceni Funkmeister 5 string, 35" scale • Hi gloss, Ebony burst finish • Chrome Hardware • Idigbo body • Three piece maple neck, ebony veneers • Maple fretboard, no markers • Burl Walnut veneer top, matching headstock • Smoked clear scratch-plate • John East J-Retro 01 deluxe preamp • DiMarzio ultra jazz pickups • Customized BadAss bridge, for top loading or string through After a few failed attempts to collect it (thanks to the weather) I got it home yesterday - I haven't played so much at home in years. The build quality is fantastic, and it plays beautifully. The string spacing at the nut end is a little further apart than on my other basses, I was initially a bit worried by that as it looks daunting, but when playing it feels very natural, and hardly made any difference TBH. I imagine this is because the spacing is similar to a 4 string. The clear scratch plate is a bit of a magnet for dust, but it looks cool so ... It's a 35" scale but that doesn't feel odd in any way, again very comfortable very quickly. It does however mean that I'm going to have to change the strings as Mike got a set of the Long scale D'Addarios, but they're not quite long enough, so from now on it's the super expensive super long sets. The east j-retro gives a huge range of sounds, and will take a bit of getting used to, as I keep completely altering the sound by accident! The mid stack (which Mike tells me John sells separately) does a huge amount on it's own, and TBH I think you could get away with just a volume and mid stack and still have a huge range of sounds. Overall I'm delighted with the bass, plays great, looks great, sounds great I can't wait to get out and gig it. I'm in the studio today so it may make it onto the album I'm recording, I'll certainly take it for the producer to have a listen too (although he normally makes me play the Squire P that he bought for £40 - it's on just about every recording he does!). I really enjoyed working with Mike on this and he really got where I was coming from as a customer and what I wanted from a bass. Here's some pics taken by Richard H I love this one - the camera focussed on the reflection of the workshop rather than the bass itself! There's Mike in the reflection I've picked up a New Years Eve gig with a scratch* band so would like it to loose it's virginity then. I'm grinning like a cheshire cat a the moment I really like the J bass shape, but in a world of Shuker's and Sadowskys it's nice to have something a little bit different * No rehearsals just some emails outlining a rough funk set.
20. 4 strings or 5?
21. My Dad's got one of these (with different pups) it's a great guitar. What sort of thing are you after when you say 'anything bass related'?
22. Rich, AFAIK nitro is less effected by the temperature than other spray paints. Have a look at the montana Black cans, they say they're winter proof... here's some pics from their website: Might be worth a shot they're not very expensive. Sorry for the thread divert
23. I used Joiners Mate PU adhesive on all my builds. Slightly different to the US stuff, but triples in size and hard as a rock. Joiners Mate
24. That looks awesome. Nice work.
