1. I htink when I saw the name of this thread I was imagining that the bass would be orange and brown (like a jaffa cake - marmalade and chocolate). I'm not sure if I'm disapointed or relieved - as I was imagining brown hardware and scratchplate - which whilst innovative may not have worked so well aesthetically.
2.
A trick that might prevent the bleed through is to spray with the base colour again after you've taped it... that should seal the edge and any bleed through will be the right colour... or am I missing something?
To avoid bleed there's a couple of things to try. - Automotive masking tape, or cut a stencil and firmly spray mount it in place, rather than normal masking. - lot's of thin coats from your cans, if the coats are really thin then the paint will dry almost instantly and thus not 'pour' under the tape - to keep the coats nice and consistent place your can in a bowl of warm water first for about 10 mins to gently heat it (thanks Dave Perry) - experiment with different caps, my favorite are pink dots for this sort of work, wide coverage and slightly lower pressure Hope that's helpful PS I love the Japanese style design.
3. Just leaving some feedback for Gary, I bought a power amp off him, it's in great nick works fine, we chatted about bass for a bit too
4. I was astonished by just how light the Purple Chili stuff is - given how robust it looks.
5. Awesome I love Robbies work.
6. How much for just the power amp?
7.
Happy Gilmour?
Yes very, thanks for asking
8. Gotta say that looks smart, really classic, nice one. I might be tempted to throw a few more coats of lacquer over the decal as you can still make out the edges a little, but that could be the camera angle, or it could be me nitpicking a great looking instrument! Great job.
9. It's a little known fact that speakers that are a non-standard colour (i.e not black) sound better. THe red ones reproduce sound much quicker, whilst the blue ones sound cooler
10.
If I don't hear that it's finished by the end of April I'll be setting a deadline for completion. I don't want this bass rushed out of the door at the last minute, but I feel I've lost leverage since it's mostly paid for now.
I think that's fair given the amount of time and patience you've displayed waiting for this to be finished. I can understand that it takes longer than a normal build given the fret fan etc, but it must be really tough for you seeing it so near to finished for so long now. Of course that said it doesn't look far away now. Just try to think of something else until it arrives - Margaret Thatcher on a cold day, Margaret Thatcher on a cold day, - sorry that's a differnt knid of delaying tactic
11. I think binding (or PRS style faux-binding) will look really cool on this shaped bass.
12. It must have been disheartening for it to not be ready today, I'd be gutted, you must have the patience of a saint, I'd be seriously pissed off at having to wait that long.
13. I've used chrome spray quite a lot in the past. Whatever you're spraying onto has to be perfect as any flaws will really show up. Funnily I was talking to my next door neighbour yesterday and we were wondering whether a chrome guitar might be a little to excessive

Iceni
I've got a four string zoot being built
Yes the pics of it look stunning, lucky bugger

Iceni

IIRC Boudica (and the Icenians) was local to where Mike is based, so AFAIK it's referencing local history.

Iceni

I'm soon to be the proud owner of an Iceni Funkmeister 5, Idigbo body, walnut burl top Can't wait.
17. You should check out some Roy Ayres. I think he's another one that Jay Kay is, err, heavily influenced by. Probably you'll also like Incognito.
18.
Tascam MP-BT1 Works a treat!
+1 Great bit of kit. Only annoying thing is that it doesn't play Apple lossless format files . IIRC Vox do a headphone amp that you can plug an iPod into.
19. I'm muting with both hands when I slap, dependent on what I'm doing. I think it's only good to have a range of ways to do things - look at how many ways Rocco mutes when playing fingerstyle.
20. I have a Stuart Spector Designs NS94
21. Looking good. It\\\'s really nice to see a grabber inspired instrument, and I like the fact that it\\\'s a slightly more modern take on it Have you thought about a tort scracthplate rather than a black one, that could look really nice. A bit like this (crappy pic) Also the speed of his work is astonishing, you\\\'re going to have this in no time!
22. I love these basses, and at that price this is a bargain, if I hadn't just put a deposit down on an Iceni I'd have it in a shot. For the mean time I'll have to live with the BO version
23. I bust a tendon in my right hand years ago. I really think you should try and not play for however long the Doc has recommended you rest for as even if you're using other fingers you'll still be moving the muscle. I only rested mine for a fortnight and it kept going - took me years to heal, still gives me gip now TBH Enjoy the rest - spend the time working on theory
24. Would transfers/stickers work? I'm not sure they'd adhere to the fingerboard if the board is oiled? If they would then that's cool.
25. Cool idea I think, you'd have a really unique bass at the end of it. Two thoughts though: 1) What's the string spacing, IIRC on a musicman 5 it's 17.5mm and this looks narrower meaning that the strings wouldn't go exactly over the poles, which could affect the tone you're after, but is it's only a mm or so probably won't have much effect 2) I think you should be able to buy some transfer paper, print the logo onto it, neatly cut it out, then a couple of coats of lacquer and hey presto Bloodaxe used this method (all be it in a more complex way) on his Aria restoration http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5094&st=20
