Nice one, congratulations.
Finished! Sounds rather good. Very responsive with masses of mid-range and treble, which I think is just the natural sound of my Hartke through a transparent cabinet. The low end became much thicker when I added the Aphex Bass Xciter.
You'll find that the Bass response improves over time as the Drivers 'Break In' I used to think all that stuff was a load of rubbish, but after a few gigs/rehearsals I really noticed an improvement in the bottom end. There are other methods that are quicker an more efficent at breaking in the drivers that don't involvoe just playing through it, check Bill's forum.

Nice - I'm suitably impressed

There's an Eden 4x10 for sale in the 'for sale' section here. That would give you an additional 2 spare drivers in case they blow again

I think the difference between a bass that costs £1500 and a bass that costs half that is very small. For that mark there are lodas of good Yamahas and other imports around, in fact the only kit you can't get for that is custom buils and rare instruments, and I know loads of people that own those but would never gig them! Where as a cheap amp is a cheap amp and the difference between the two prices is much more significant. IMO etc etc
Possibly, but there's more to the bass than the sound - it's got to be fun to play, stay in tune, not be uncomfortable (thinking about weight, neck dive)...
I think these things really only affect bases in the sub £400 bracket, if you're playing a bass worth more than that and it suffers from going out of tune, intonation problems etc... I'd take it back to the shop.

I haven't bought any bass magazines for ages, it just feels like I'm paying for a magazine full of adverts, occasionally interupted by the odd article.

3/10 cabs... any reason why nobody makes them?
If you call collecting dust interesting. I was going to get it sorted out but with it being right handed, I just haven't been inspired. I gave it to a guitarist friend who was going to do something to it for himself but when I saw how he was getting on I quickly took it back. Any Ideas? (yeah, put it in the f***in' bin and burn it)
I forgotten I'd asked about this, looks like a decent body. Bloodaxe has posted a really inspiring 'ressurection' of an Old Aria though neck, might be interesting/inspiring for you... I've used the Marcus Miller ones and they are great strings. DR's are my 1st choice of strings apart from the cost, sound great, play nicely and last for ages. Unfortunatley the cost (in this country) is prohibitive so I usually wind up with Rotosounds.

Hi Alex, I agree with Dave's sentiment but I completeley understand what you mean about the handles, I imagine the plasic recessed ones will mess up the internal bracing, and the metal surface mounted ones can be quite heavy. If you're concerned about carpet (I know there are a fair few people who dislike it) what about going for a tolex or bufffalo type finish? I'd imagine that this won't add much to the weight, and I have an old Trace Elliot that's covered in some kind of plastic/tolex type finish and it's really tough. Although it's meant to be a bitch to put on I suppoe with some Tolex and Stap handles you could add some grill cloth and they'd look all niche and retro, yet the sound (and weight) would be very modern, that would be cool, but it would mean giving it a really top finish.

Hmmm, Interesting thread this, and I have to say tat yes modern western music can be charted back through Blues and Jazz, Ragtime, and Spirtual Slave music. I was interested in OutToPlayJazz's comments about Bach, I assume you are refering to melody and harmony rahter than Rhythm? As far as I'm aware the vast majority of western music prior to blues was more about harmonic movement than it was about rhythm? Of course a lot of African slaves brought very strong rhythmic traditions with them, which made their way into Blues (and Jazz et al.), listening to the charts today all the music is centered around the rhythm as much (if not more) than it is around the harmony and melody, especially R&B tunes. In fact I think you'd be hard pressed to find a song in the top 40 that's not in 4/4! Of course this is just my interpritation, not fact.
for one Slipknot have a very varied arangement of instruments they have a drummer a percutionist two guitarists (i think) a bassist a "DJ" mixer fella and a keyboardist and vocalist if i remmember rightly...

so if i took some jazz and played it with distortion or got my brother (our guitarist) to play it on his guitar with effects then it could turn from Jazz to Rock??
I think this is a little to simplifed, it's more about the music's roots. Take the Slipknot example, they were nfluenced by a lot of heavy metal bands, for example Metallica, who in turn were influenced by the likes of Black Sabbath, who were originally a heavy Blues band called The Polka Tulk Blues Company! Obviously their inspiration was Blues bands from America, who were in turn influenced by early Blues, etc etc. All through out the evolution subtle changes have taken place to the chord voicings as well as the tone, effects and tempo of the songs,, and of course influences from multiple other artists/genres.
Alex, please take this as a purposeful comment:- If you want to start making these cabs to supply them to punters and sell them for a profit, the finish is the most important part of the finished product. cab photo I want you to succeed with this, but unless you get the finish looking spot on then they will always look like a 'homemade box' Ditch the top handles, revert to side mounted flip handles or steel bar handles, work on the carpet skills or invest some time and money in a painted finish other than the tuffcab, as it scratches far to easily. Perhaps sending the cabs off to places that do the truck liner stuff (line x coatings for example) Dave
yup +1

Jakesbass, Jakesbass And Thrice Jakesbass
gilmour replied to jakenewmanbass's topic in Tutors Available
Thought I should just pop my head in and say that after reading this thread I booked my first lesson with Jake. I've been playing electric for a long time, and work professionally as a musician (although not on upright!). I've been dabblin in double for about 18 months, but have only previously had a couple of lessons. I really enjoyed my first lesson with Jake, he was very positive and related things very clearly, I've already come away with a much clearer focus about where I need to improve my playing and more importantly some exercises to practice to actually do that (effing Backbeat, I feel like such a tool not being able to get that right, grrr)! Cheers Jake, see you next week. -
I know exactly what you mean, I use the Eden WT405 - so there is very few knobs or buttons. I jsut got a little more aggressive with the EQ, boosting the bass and cutting the treble, mine also has the 'warm' button (a valve emulator) so I have that pushed in. It sounds great I'm now completely happy with it. Originally I wanted to leave the EQ completely flat, but it was a little to clean, I'm not sure why, and I've noticed a lot of players want to do that, but the EQs there for a reason. I used to use Trace Elliot stuff, and went back to it once to see how it sounded now that I'm use to the Eden, and whilst I still love my Trace but there was no contest, Eden all the way. Trace just seemed to have less of everything, and the MC in my band turned around to me after the first track and asked why the bass wasn't as deep as usual, If an MC can spot it then something is definatley not right!
This is a rhetorical question right? - ALL basses are owned by Chuck Norris. He allows you to play HIS basses. Also, everytime you play a song on your bass, the original manufacturer has to pay Chuck Norris 99cents. Hamster
They say that Chuck Norris is so tough that under his beard he has no chin, just another fist....
But would anybody in a normal gigging situation (the tiny stages most of us perform on) even hear the 115. This was an extreme example but I picked it because somebody was being advised to add a 1x15 to an Ashdown rig in another thread. I wonder if you were gigging with this kind of rig would you notice if the bottom cab was unplugged?
An example of this is about 8 months ago someone was using my backilne (Eden Head, Peavey 1x15) in a smallish venue (150 people tiny stage) and the sound engineer asked if I would mind going to ask him to turn down as he was drowning out the other instruments (through a 1K rig, overkill if you ask me). I asked him why he had it so loud, and he explined he couldn't hear it, it was very strange just could hardly hear anything from the amp at all, untill you were about 8' in front of it, and given that the stage was only about 5'...there's probably a lesson in here about speaker placement as per the Wiki, but not always possible in the real world.
I don't really understand the technicalities but I am intrested in cutting through the 'I think this is better than...' that tends to exist in the various opinions bandied about. What conclusion do you draw and what would you recommend the potential buyer (thats me now BTW) should take into consideration in wanting a decent headroom and suitability for double and electric. Sorry it's so obviously personally motivated, but I am looking for a rig as you know. Cheers in advance Jake
Jake, I use one of BFMs O15TB's. (Details here) If you like I can bring it over with me when I come for my upright lesson this week, and you can have a blast after the lesson. I've not really used it with my upright (so will be interesting to hear), but for electric I've yet to hear better.

It's 20" wide and 39" high. Like I say I need to get around to finding some scales to weigh it on, but it's no heavier than a standard 1x15. It's certainly not a struggle to lift (apart from I put my handles to high so it hits me in the shins!)
O15, standard or tallboy, leave the tweeter out. As for lightweight and portability, google 'Hoffman's Iron Law'. Big bottom does not from small cabs come.
Finnbass over at www.finnbass.com has built this cab with the omition of the tweeter, you should check it out (here's the thread), he's been very happy with the results. Whils this cab isn't lightweigh it caertainly is lighter than most similar sized cabs, and lighter than my trace 4x10, although it is still quite a big cab once you've played through it you'll want to make the effort to take it around.
- why not GRP?
Surely it's just down to manufacturing costs? Costs of making up moulds etc. would be very inhibitive given the relativley small number of consumers, and the cost of alternatives.
this is good guys thanks for the o[pinion. my ashdown combo is carpet, and i put it in the back of my mums car once, forgetting she'd had some fecking hay in there/.... and it's still there.... the hoover won't even get rid of it...

yeah thats the only real problem with carpet, mine has wood splinters underneath it from the wooden frame we have to put it through to store it under the stage.
Try a clothes brush, that's what i use, works a treat.

Need tech advice on using a supplemental power amp
gilmour replied to Biggsy's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have an Eden WT300 (4ohm) which I couldn't love the sound of more. I've heard of some people using it as a pre-amp, and then going through a power amp for more headroom.
I have an Eden Time Traveller WT405 - and it goes down to 2 ohms, not that I've tried, but that's what it says in the manual, you sure yours doesn't?
I don't think cabs get much more efficient than my current ones, but certainly something to look out for if I do want to switch.

Possibly not commercial cabs, but no direct radiating cab is particularly efficient. One of the reasons for DIY is not having to live with the inefficiency of direct radiators.
I've built a BFM O15TB and been gigging it for about 3 months now, it's simply awesome and complements the Eden really well. You'll be amazed how much more volume and sensitvity you can get form these cabs compared with commercial ones. My build diary and review are here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=11971 -
Funnily I was speaking to the guy from EB yesterday, I like the Piezo mod, unfortunatley you can't get it as an aftermarket mod, and new it up's the price of the bass by about £285. So I guess you have to ask yourself if it's something you're likely to use. The Piezo on the Yamaha TRB5P is incredible, but I guess that's a bass that's designed to be more versatile, whereas you buy a 'ray because you want a 'ray sound.
