1. In one of my old bands we wrote a happy, bouncy pop song. We would sometimes play the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls then go into our song. Then back to For Whom The Bell Tolls for the middle part. Then back into our pop song for the last chorus. We also did similar with Raining Blood. We just liked to annoy the metal heads.
2. I realised a long time ago that I never used volume or tone controls on my basses so I took out the tone controls and replaced the volume knobs with an on/off switch. I've never regretted it.
3.
decent foh engineer
This is what concerns me.
4. Do any of you guys using IEMs NOT use your own PA? Would it be a lot more difficult if you were to use them with a house PA/engineer?
5.
Sennheiser HD201's are perfectly adequate https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Closed-Dynamic-Stereo-headphones-Black-Silver/dp/B0007XJSQC Look for closed back because it cuts out the sound for people near you and also some of the background noise you would otherwise hear.
Looks good to me. Thank you very much.
6. I'm also looking at a silent practice setup and the Zoom B1 looks good. Can anyone point me in the direction of these £20 Sennheisers that have been mentioned? I don't want to get the wrong ones and find out they're useless.
7.
It would depend on who the previous owner was. If one of Dee Dee Ramone's basses came up & I had the cash, I'd be very tempted, although with regards to any other player, no matter how famous, probably not.
This.
8. My wife also happens to be a bass player but she often says I have too many basses and I don't need another one - which, as we all know, is wildly untrue. Although she has more than me.
9. Chris #2 (Anti-Flag) Krist Novoselic (Nirvana) Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble) JC (Danko Jones) Ben Ellis (Serafin)
10. Dammit, now I really want a new pedal!
11. I have the 17s and they are absolutely the best piece of gear I've ever bought. I think they do change the sound very slightly (it's not just like turning the volume down) but it's very easy to get used to. If you don't have some then go out and get some.
12. https://www.couchguitarstraps.com/guitar-straps/seat-belt-and-woven-guitar-straps.html Seatbelt straps with vegan 'leather' that doesn't stretch or wear/dry out like leather. The adjuster can move slightly but it stays in place if you put a bit of tape around it.
13.
thanks for the heads-up; that area is a nightmare to park in though. Other side of the road from the shell garage
There's plenty of street parking round the back of the building (assuming this will be the main road side) but not out front. The Drum Centre has been struggling for a while. Last I heard they only had one employee. Although going off the wording in the blog post I wonder if they've taken over/bought them out and moved up the road a bit.
14. Anyone local(ish) to Nottingham may be interested to know this http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/blog/2016/06/07/pmt-nottingham-music-shop-coming-soon/
15. I've never liked Coldplay. Probably never will. I didn't watch their Glastonbury set but I did see their tribute to Viola Beach which I thought was very classy. I respect them for that.
16. That's a shame but it's good to know. Thanks.
17. Has anyone had any experience with Nash basses, specifically their P model? I like the look of them and I've heard good things about their guitars but not a lot about the basses.
18. I am a bass player. I can play guitar but I don't really like to.
19.
I also think like the OP, everyone sounds better than me, however I can flip the coin. Not many play like me, and my style is what is needed for my band. Would I prefer to sound like them, or me, in my band?
This. Word for word.
20. It matters to me. Not in as much as I wouldn't like a 'cheap' looking setup but in that I like my head and cab to match. Not for any reason other than it pleases me. I'd describe myself as being a bit OCD but I'm fairly certain that isn't a thing.
21. I'm sure Newtone would make them.
22. Years ago I noticed that sometimes I would have picks rotating in my hand or drop them often st seemingly random gigs. A little while later I realised that this only happened if I watched my hands before going on stage. A little sweat and oil from your skin really helps to grip better. Wash these away and you lose a lot of friction between your fingers and the pick. I'll wash my hands if they're dirty after load-in or whatever but after that I'll leave them until after the show. Not the most hygienic approach but it helps.
23. In no particular order: Johnny Cash (especially his later stuff) Simon Neil Dave Hause Laura Jane Grace
24. Not me but it turns out I live very close to you.
25. As others have said I'd start with a thin pick since you're in a bit of a tight spot. It'll bend more as you hit the string so you won't have to grip it as tightly and you'll have less chance of dropping it because of this. As for playing position it's whatever feels most comfortable for you. I play with my bass low so my right arm pretty much straight, otherwise my elbow aches if it's any higher. But that's just me. However, since you're in a rush, is suggest leaving your strap at whatever length you usually have it. If you lower it it will also change your left hand positioning which can be difficult, uncomfortable or even painful if you're not used to it.
