Mostly the neck pickup, but will dabble with others to experiment.... Jas

One thing that helps relax me and reduces my nerves when auditioning for a new band, is to treat it as a two way audition. So I go there thinking about what the band is like, what are the people like, how good are they etc. Not, what will they think I'm like. If it doesn't work out, nothing is lost and it wasn't meant to be. Its still an anxious time for a musician at any level. Jas

Good luck, glad you are getting out there and giving it a go. Sure you will come across a few odd bods on the way, just be honest in your expectations and you will be fine. Don't take it too seriously and remember to have fun :-) Jas

For me, playing Bass is all about the journey, not the destination. I am not the greatest player but enjoy learning new songs, even the easy ones. I have been in a few bands over the years, not high profile bands with exceptionally talented musicians, but local pub bands with nice guys and girls at a similar level to me. Try advertising on 'Join my Band' or similar stating what your after. There are a lot of other musicians in the same position as you looking for a starter band. Jas

What to buy for £35? Suggestions please.

Are there any instructional type books or DVDs you might benefit from? Jas -
Thanks Dad, be good to hear your thoughts on them. The website states that orders will be guaranteed on 22nd February. There is no option to purchase a set online, but it seems I can reserve a set via email. Looks like they are quite popular and the coverage they got on tv has been very successful. I wonder if the Dragons have missed out on this one? Jas

Has anyone seen or used these? http://aerodrums.com...s-product-page/ I saw them on an episode Dragons Den on TV a few weeks ago and was really impressed. I am not a drummer so was wondering if they would be any good for a complete novice to learn with. They seem ideal to me as they are quiet and do not take up any room. I was gutted when I missed out on a second hand set for sale on here earlier this week. Being quite a new product I guess it will take a while for them to become more available second hand. I can't even buy them new at the moment as they have been so popular since they were on the telly. I have looked at an electric drum kit, but decent ones are more expensive than the Aerodrums and there will still be the striking noise on the pads to annoy Mrs Bigjas...... Jas

The 'volume knob pole' shouldn't waggle in my experience, so it could be the volume pot that needs replacing? Or like you say, a loose wire/dry joint. Shame you don't live closer as I could of done this for you for nothing. Its only a small job. Maybe someone on here who lives a bit closer could take a look? Jas

iPhone Apps for bass player - (esp your fave tuner...)
Bigjas replied to LukeFRC's topic in General Discussion
The Polytune tuner app has always worked well for me over the years. I don't use ios for anything else, so will be interested to see what else is out there. Jas -
Not sure why, but this news has really knocked me for 6......... Can't believe he has gone. Jas

Gigging bassists... how many basses do you own?
Bigjas replied to The-Ox's topic in General Discussion
I currently own 6 basses, one is an acoustic that I use for quiet practice/working out songs etc at home. Of the other 5, I take 2 with me to gigs. I gig about 30 - 40 times a year. The other 3 rarely get played and are hanging on the wall looking pretty........ The 2 I take to gigs are a 5er that I need for just 1 song and my main gigging Bass that I built myself a few years ago. Jas -
I was in the same position as you a few months back, I ended up plumping for the Sony and have been very impressed so far. Jas

Song retention - any tips on how to remember songs?
Bigjas replied to Naetharu's topic in General Discussion
I'm the same as grumpyguts, i just keep playing the songs as often as I can. I'm in 2 gigging bands with over 5 hours of songs to remember. I find it hard to remember all of them so I concentrate on the set list that is coming up for the next gig. Repetition is key for me. Jas -
Keeping the missus happy...DIY bass storage solution
Bigjas replied to silky13's topic in General Discussion
What a great idea!! Nicely done and great that everyone is happy. Jas -
I've played guitar since I was a kid. I went to see Wilko Johnson at The Cellars in Portsmouth about 7 years ago as I love his guitar playing, but ended up watching and listening to Norman Watt-Roy the whole evening. I was mesmerized by his technique and his sound. So a couple of weeks after the gig, I bought my first Bass and started learning/practicing. 6 months later I formed a covers band and have loved every moment of it. Jas

I've managed to bag 2 of the Classic acoustics and they are a lot of guitar for the money. Both of mine had minor imperfections in the finish but play just fine. Jas

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
Bigjas replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
There's one I'm eying up right now, what's the quality on these like? Hit and miss? Or are they playable?
All three I've had so far have been playable and only have minor cosmetic issues. The finish isn't the best, but for the price they are a bargain and worth a punt. If you get one, just remember how much you paid for it. I have got a very playable, reasonable sounding nylon classical acoustic for the grand total of £19 including postage from Germany. Most people can't see what's wrong with it because the flaws are very minor. I realise not everyone has had the same experience, so it's a gamble, but the odds are in your favour. Jas -
Another Boss TU-2 user here. Does everything I need it to do. Jas
Don't beat yourself up, there wasn't much of a purchase window anyway AT! I was refreshing regularly this morning (both main and mobile), and like I said I reckon it was sub 30 minutes between there not being anything, and them all being sold out! Such a shame, I quite fancy a new Christmas deko...
I was lucky this morning and checked in at the right time and bagged one of the 12 string acoustics. I check in to the mobile and desktop sites a few times during the day on my phone. I've been quite lucky recently and got a 5 string fretless and two nylon strung classicals. All have needed a bit of a set up and new strings but they are unbelievable value for money. Jas -
I've just switched from Cubase to Reaper and I'm very impressed. You get a 30 day trial period and I bought a license after a couple of hours. Jas

As said above, there are some very good second hand Basses around for that money. If you really want a new one, then this should be something that might tick all the boxes? http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_squier_affinity_p_bass_pj_bk.htm I have an Affinity P and it is a very good Bass. Jas

I have a Zoom H2 and have used it to good effect during Rehearsals and gigs to gather info on the sound of mine and others bands. The recorder never lies and if there are any problems then the recording will show you. For example In my previous band, we had a new female singer and she was very average at singing, but the rest of the band loved her. I recorded a gig and played it back to the rest of the band, including the singer, to prove that I wasn't just being negative, but she really couldn't sing to the required standard. The guitarist made himself look stupid by saying that the recorder made her sound 'off'. Have a listen to your recordings and be honest with each other. Jas
