I like to try and copy the original as close as my talent will allow. On some songs this is easy, on others I can't match the talent of the original player, so I will get as close as I can. When watching/listening to other cover bands, I like to hear it as I remember it from the original. Jas
Perfect. I would imagine If i'm going with 2 instruments into one amp that it would be sensible to put a DI after the splitter?
Not sure why you would need a DI after the splitter? Unless you are going through the PA as well? Jas

I have the Boss A/B Footswitch http://www.gak.co.uk/en/boss-ab-2/1266 Its £35 and works well. 2 inputs and one output - or 1 input and 2 outputs. Just switch between the 2, nice and simple. Jas

Yep, I suffer from this too, usually when gigging. For me it depends on the volume of the music, if we are in a small venue and its all a bit loud, then everything sounds off, this is very un-nerving as I know I'm playing in the right key, but vocals and guitar sound off. Its something I am getting used too the more gigs we do. When we practice in the rehearsal room, I do not have this problem, I think this is due to the volume levels being much lower. When I bring this up with the rest of the band, they don't have the same problem and don't think we should turn down. I have recently started to use ear plugs to see if it helps, it does to a certain degree but wearing ear plugs does take some getting used to ( I feel isolated from the rest of the band and the audience). My hearing is starting to deteriorate and just put it down to this. Jas

Have a listen to the Arctic Monkeys album - whatever people say I am. There are some great songs that are nice to play, my favourites are Dancing Shoes, I bet you look good on the dance floor, A certain romance, and From the ritz to the rubble. Jas -
My band, 'The Fringe' played the Gosprt Festival yesterday. It was my first time on such a huge stage, such a great experience. We went down very well with the punters even though it was mid afternoon. Jas

This is my current rig. Hiwatt 100w PA head and a custom cab I built myself. The cab is loaded with 2 x 12 inch Goodmans Audiom 12P 50 watt speakers and 2 Goodmans Hifax 50HX horns. Bass is an Aria IGB - 68. Jas

I would only let someone I know borrow my gear. I'm affraid there are too many people that do not respect other peoples gear and would they pay for repairs if it were to break whilst they were using it? Reading through this thread, some people have said that they didn't even get a thank you for letting them borrow amps etc, how rude!! what has it all come to when a simple 'thank you' is too much trouble? Jas
What cab are you suing? Right cab will sort the volume issue.
Well, you are right, the cab makes a big difference. Last night I had band practice, so I took the Hiwatt head and the 2 cabs that came with it. They are old PA cabs, each of them has a Goodmans Audiom 12-P 50 watt speaker. I didn't think they would be all that good as they are dated 1976 and only 50 watts each (the Marshall 4x10 is rated at 450w), how wrong was I!!!! When i ran this head through the Marshall 4x10 the volume was just over three quarters and it was struggling. Through the goodmans speakers, the volume is on less than half, and the sound is unbelievable. So much tone and clarity. What a rig I now have. I am considering making a new cabinet to house the 2 speakers. Thanks for all your advice, I am so chuffed, can't wait to gig my new rig on Saturday. Jas

Thanks for the advice guys, you have just prevented a 1974 Hiwatt going up in smoke............ Looks like a decent cab is required, any ideas on which configuration? 4 x 10 or 2 x 10 or 1 x 15 ? Is anyone using a similar amp, if so what cabs are you using? Once again, thanks, this forum is great for idiots like me............... Jas
-
im using the 4 x 10 Marshall cab. Jas

Just had a thought, the Hiwatt has a slave channel. Could I link that to the PA to give me some more headroom? Jas
-
Thanks for your replies I love the Hiwatt head, really nice tone, just not loud enough for some of the songs we play (we have a very loud drummer that tells me to f off when I say he is too loud) its 100w and just gets swallowed up on some songs where the drummer gets carried away. My idea was to have the Hiwatt for most of the set and just switch to the Marshall on some songs. I'll just have take 2 rigs with me cos I don't want to stop using the hiwatt. Jas

Hi there I currently have a Marshall MB4410 combo and a Hiwatt 100 valve head. I woould like to be able to switch between the 2 amps during a set, but only use one cab (the Marshall cab). Would it hurt either of the 2 amps if i used a splitter box so that both both amps are connected to the one amp at the same time? I would only use one amp at a time using an A/B footswitch so i could switch between heads without turning amps on/off or pulling leads. It just saves having to lug around two cabs but I am worried it could harm either of the amps if they are both switched on and connected to the same cab. Both amps are 4ohms and so is the cab. Thanks Jas

I have had this one for over a year to cart a Marshall mb4410 about, this is a very heavy combo and this trolley copes with it very well. Jas
Here's mine: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Einhell-Folding-Truck-90kg-Capacity/dp/B001GU6FYI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333786774&sr=8-1 It carries up to 90kg and only cost £22.39 including delivery. It's light and packs away small - I'm very pleased with it.
Absolutely fantastic!! That performance made me smile for the full 12 minutes and made me realise just how much I have to learn. It would be great to hear more videos from you. Thanks Jas
Can anyone suggest where the cheapest place to get one is? Thanks
I have just bought one from Dolphin Music http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/36069-auralex-gramma-amp-monitor-isolation-riser-single-.html#sterling_uk £38 plus £4 postage. I couldn't find it any cheaper? I havent tried it out yet, that will happen on Wednesday at a pub gig on a hollow floor. I have played there before and I will def notice if there is any difference in sound............... Jas
-
I've just bought one of these, nice bit of kit. It sometimes struggles to pick up the E string, but carefull positioning makes it better. Its nice and discrete and means one less thing on the floor for me to trip over. £20 well spent. Jas

I have got the MB4410 (4x10) and its a great amp for the money. With an extension cab its louder than you will ever need for pub gigs etc. I tried it with a 1x15 extension cab and it nearly blew my trousers off!! You don't need to worry about volume. Play with the 2 channels and the 'Blend' option, its great. It is bloody heavy though (obviously the 2x10 will be lighter) Jas

When the Sun Goes Down - Arctic Monkeys. Nice and easy and great fun to play. Jas

I've just had my 1974 Hiwatt valve PA head serviced at Sound Superior in Lee on Solent, Hampshire. Really good service and did a great job on the amp which had not been used for 15+ years. http://soundsuperior.co.uk/ Jas

I bought this PA head 20 years ago from my neighbour, to use as a PA head in my first band (I was the singer). I didn't know what I was buying (and he didn't know what he was selling) and I just thought it was an old PA head with a couple of old speakers, but it got me gigging and I used it for a few years until I Joined other bands and didn't need it any longer. I put it in the loft and forgot about it until a few weeks ago when I stumbled across a thread in the for sale section of BC, Hiwatt custom 100 Bass head for sale £750!! So I did some homework and realised I had quite a nice guitar/bass valve amp in the loft. So I got it out and sent it off to the local tech guy to get it serviced. Got it back yesterday, and wow!! what a lovely smooth sound it makes with my Bass guitar. The amp has 6 inputs, so I used a junction box to plug in to 3 inputs on the amp and it just makes the nicest sound ever. I am so chuffed I used a Marshall 4x10 cab and then a Peavey 1x15 cab and its great. I can see why some people love the vintage gear. It has the original Partridge transformers, Bulgin Lead etc, and the tech guy said its in great condition. I have dated it to 1974 using the S/N, 2 years younger than me and its certainly wearing better than me!! My missus wants me to sell it, but now i've played it, I'm not so sure I tried it with my PRS 6 string, and again its a lovely amp with that too. I suppose its a kind of 'Barn Find' as in I had something pugged away that I didn't realise was reasonably rare and worth a few quid. First time thats ever happened to me Some pics Jas

I have the MB4410, same amp but 4 x 10". I think its a great amp for the money. There have been reliability issues with them but i had no issues sending mine back for replacement when the volume pot started to crackle. I still use mine for rehearsing and the odd gig now and then with no problems. Like Loz, I added a 1 x 15" extensiion for more depth and its plenty loud enough. TBH its plenty loud enough on its own. I like the 2 channels and the blend option, I find i can get all the sounds and tones I need (covers band). Jas
