1. I did try flats out of curiosity and didn't like them, and the black nylon ones, but soon went back to rounds. I didn't like the feel of them. I suppose I have just been conditioned, (a bit like the North Koreans), and play what im told!
2. When I started playing bass circa 1982, round wound strings were the industry standard. However, in the 50,s and 60,s flats were the standard. This got me thinking "When did rounds become the main bass string?" Listening to music in the early 70,s flats were still king, but circa 1976, 1977 it was mainly rounds in the charts (JJB, Bruce Foxton etc) So when did flats get replaced? My guess in 1975. The disco era was kicking in, and those twangy octave leaps cut through the mix better. Only a guess though. Any thoughts?
3. I had a Carlsboro Cobra 100w combo, utter sh*te!
4.
Considering a lot of rock (we certainly 'classic rock') male vocalists pitch up into the female range it's no bad thing getting someone who sits naturally in that range from the off to do it. With any luck you won't have to be continually moving down keys from the originals as happens with some male fronted bands. The lyrics thing might get a bit awkward but a few subtle adjustments of gender where specific in songs isn't too difficult and just avoid the ones that are so obvious 'man sings about woman' stuff. Mind you even Winehouse made no attempt at changing the Valerie lyric when it clearly makes no sense singing it from a woman's POV (unless Valerie was bisexual). Hope it works out. 5. I,ll be there about 12.30 with a stonking hangover, so if you will all keep the noise down, that will be much appreciated!
6. Daz sorted out 3 DVD,s of audio books to keep me occupied on my long flight to Australia, and posted them to me at his own expense. Cheers mate!!
7. I,m quite lucky in respect that all the band members drive, and have their own transport. Having said that. the singer is only 10 minutes up the road from me and for longer distances I usually pick him up. Its amazing what I can get in my little Fiesta!!
8. I play quite hard too, but I don't use heavy strings, far from it. I use EB super slinkies but have the action a bit higher. That stops a lot of the probs.
9. Blimey! I read somewhere that one of The Shadows bassists was electrocuted and killed when his amp short circuited! I don't think it was a live gig thank God!!
10.
I don't understand. Do you mean I've priced this too high?
No, I think he has one up for sale at the same price.
11. I had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn't April!
12. Hey Well done! I picked up a 2011 P Bass in Olympic White back in October last year. It was the first new USA Fender I bought since 1995. The newer Fenders are a vast improvement over the last 5 years or so. Can I ask how much you haggled??
13. The Beatles - When I,m 64 is speeded up on the mono version by a semitone for some reason. but in the original key for the stereo
14. And he played bass in the Beach Boys after Brian Wilson baled out! What a resume'
15. The bass part on New Years Day makes the song. A different bassline would not work as well IMHO
16. I Personally wouldn't worry about it. Theres much more important things going on in the world.
17. Stuart from Peter Cooks In Hanwell West London will sort that out for ya!
18. I have been listening so some old 60's stuff today, and have come to the conclusion that some bass parts have been added as an afterthought. They don't go anywhere or add anything to the song and seem superfluous in some cases. These two spring to mind. 19. Nigel Harrison with Blondie in the 70,s when Debbie Harry still had her looks. He always seemed to have a whale of a time, jumping up and down while playing his Fender P.
20. Well, this thread has certainly cheered me up!!
21. Just a Boss ODB3 used very subtly. And then only on a few songs.
22. All we need now is for B R X to get a nice P bass. and stop mucking about with those silly pointy basses!!
23.
Being repeatedly kicked in the trousers is far better than the old Bass Cellar. I've also always had good service from Wunjos, Denmark Street is becoming worth a visit again.
Ah! That's what I was thinking of - not Andys. Apple ogies to the OP
