1.
The year that we played at Butlin's, the "travelling" band (who played a different camp site each night) were "Brian Poole and Blackcat" - yes, he of the Tremelos. I know so because he always wore his T-shirt proclaiming that fact. Unfortunately he always wore a leather jacket that covered the first and last two letters of his name on the T-shirt. I don't think he appreciated me calling him Ian Poo
I once did a gig wearing a Star Wars T shirt featuring Darth Vader saying " I am your father' I couldnt understand why our guitarist keep looking over at me and giggling. I asked him at the end of the gig what he was laughing at, and he said that my guitar strap was covering certain letters so all he could see was 'I am fat!"
2.
I've played Butlins at Skeggy a couple of times...
Is that from Viz??
3.
When playing your bass live, in a studio or at home, how does it make you feel. Are you lost in what you are doing or is it something that has now become repetitive, a chore?
I felt I was stuck in a rut with my bass playing, It felt like a chore. So I looked on YouTube for some walking bass videos. I discovered a whole new approach to walking that I had not thought of before. Now I am enjoying playing again using my newly learned approach.
4.
Ok guys, most know I'm a Yankee. What is a holiday camp? Blue
http://www.seasidehistory.co.uk/camps.html
5. Knock yerself out! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skegness
6. I had a Laney Linebacker once. Never again, dreadful sounding crap.
7. We always start with a loud 'Good Evening!' and then launch straight in to the opening riff of 'Pretty Vacant' That grabs them from the off. We dont play the same song twice, although as an encore we will sometimes pull a song from the first set when the place was quieter. The folks who came in later wont have heard it first time round, and the ones who were, dont mind hearing it again.
8. A Nate Mendel. I use one for my main gigging bass, and even Scott has been using them for his bass lessons.
9.
Morrissey apparently doesn't think bass players (or drummers) contribute that much...
Gary Day who played with Morrissey is a member on here. I wonder what he thinks of this?
10. Andy Rourke was only 19 or 20 years old when he played on those records. An excellent bassist at such a young age. I was roughly the same age as him and could barely string 2 notes together!
11. get yerself the NY 121 and you have small, light 500w rig. I should know, I use it every week!
12.
What is this 'on the coast' thing, anyway? How is that limiting?
Could be worse, They could live on Lindesfarne!
13. There's a lot of love on here for The Gallery in London. I went there once and found them rude and surly. I never went back. Wunjo's however, let me play loads of P basses with no issues. Even encouraging me to try them through different amps. I bought 3 basses from there and still go back.
14. I now use my Sterling SUB 4 on gigs much more now since I sorted out the over powered preamp. Although its not a Fender it punches above its weight in a live situation.
15. Only to other bassists I know. I get a few bands coming to listen to us play when they are not playing. The other week a singer from a mates band wanted to sing a few numbers and the bassist joined in. I scuttled off to the bar and left him to it. Sounded great! I have never heard the sound of my rig as a punter.
16.
I nominate the Line 6 Spider 30 - an indescribably hideous aural caricature of a guitar amp! Bring it on...
Yes +1 My guitarist in my old band had one of those. It sounded like a wasp buzzing around in a tin can!
17.
The one on this album cover in 1961.
I dont recall ever seeing Bruce Welch play a Tele. Obviously a staged picture as Jet Harris took his ashtrays off.
18. I have the Beatles Recording Sessions book by Mark Lewison. Its quite an interesting read. The Beatles and George Martin worked together on the mono versions. The stereo versions were almost an afterthought. None of The Beatles took stereo seriously. In the 60,s it was considered a gimmick. The only album issued in stereo only, was Abbey Road. By 1969 mono was on the way out.
19. The P Bass split pickup introduced in 1957 has been used by countless bass makers and copies since then. It seems Fender struck gold with that design.
20. Have a listen to these excerpts of the stereo/mono versions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtVF4zl_N0U
21. I have The Remasters on both mono and stereo. The mono version of Sgt Pepper is far superior than the stereo. There are far more little bits that were left out of the stereo.
22. I had a couple of chord books. The Beatles and All Mod Cons by The Jam. I stuck sticky labels on the frets to show where the notes are and plonked along to the records in my room for weeks. Eventually I found some friends about my age who played guitar and drums, and we would jam along together. I played my first gig about 6 months after picking up the bass.
23. Dunno about the heel stamp, but the serial number is right for a 77.
