1. My Mum used to play the guitar and my Gran used to play the old Joanna down the Rub a Dub when I was a kid. The rest of my family is tone deaf. Although my Nephew is doing quite well on his violin at school.
2. A Fender Precision when I was 16 I lusted after one. And to this day thats all I play.
3. I had a similar experience with everyones favourite London bass shop in Camden. I took a P Bass there for a minor tweak and a setup on the recommendation of other BCers. Popped it in and was told it would be ready next Tuesday. Being a bit bit of a journey from the other side of London, I thought it would be wise to ring them first. "When did you bring it in?" they asked. Last Tuesday I told them. "Then it would be ready then" OK so I trudge back to the shop only to find they hadnt even started on it! The guy on the phone couldnt even bother to check, and I had a wasted journey. Strangely enough, I have not been back since.
4. I think you are only allowed to upload a certain number of attachments. Once you hit the limit you may have to delete a few of the older ones to free up space.
5. A major and minor Pentatonic. I use these scales all the time. The building blocks of improvisation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enWrSrIGcY4
6.
For you Blue. Think USA = The Ventures, UK = The Shadows. https://www.youtube....h?v=o3tBzYcl7-8 Incidently, one group I play with still have a couple of dozen Shadows and Ventures numbers in our reportoire. Hank Marvin introduced the 1st Stratocaster to the UK and Jet, (the original Bassman), probably the 1st Precision. They were instrumental in firing up my generation into wanting to learn guitar and play in a band, and that includes just about every Brit lead guitarist you can name - Mark Knofler, Brian May etc, etc. This was my 1st LP, Xmas 1961, I still have it. You had to be there to appreciate the impact Hank Marvin's sound had. Can you imagine hearing a Strat' through a Vox AC30, with tape echo and a trem' bar having never heard anything like it before. You just had to be there!
Recorded in London's' Abbey Road Studio 2. The same studio as Blues favourite group would use the following year.
7. This pic has it all. A Fender US Standard P Bass, A dodgy pair of shorts, Markbass CMD121 inc NY ext cab AND a music stand.
8. I was 11 in 1976, so I remember the long hot summer and my last year at Junior school. It would be another 6 years before I took up the bass.
9. I have always assumed I was an average bass player. Recently, I heard a live recording of the band and was quietly impressed with myself. The whole band was tight and the runs and fills I played complemented the songs well. The guitarist once told me that I was the best bassist he had ever played with, and several bassists from other bands have complimented my playing. But still I think I,m average.
10.
I agree. Owning a Fender is about as snobbish as owning a Ford Fiesta.
I have a Fender and a Ford Fiesta.
11. Ultimate thread derail. http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/029/970/trainn.jpg?1260328965
12. They would probably give their original bassist Mark Evans his old job back!
13.
I haven't heard this track in years but on a quick re-listen, to me it's obvious that the whole rhythm section is synths/samples and sequenced. In fact I suspect all the instruments except the main guitar parts are synths/samples that have been sequenced, and maybe even the acoustic guitar isn't 100% played.
Par for the course for a late 80's record. It came out in 1989 when the charts were full of those Stock Aitken Waterman clickety clackety tunes. It would have been much better with a live band. IMHO
14.
If your standing vertical and playing an electric bass guitar in any kind of rock band you are influenced by The Beatles whether you know it or not and whether you like it or not. Blue
What about Jet Harris? He was the first real British bass guitarist anyway.
15. I have an American Standard P bass, but I much prefer the MIM Nate Mendel. I have ripped out the Quarter Pounders and replaced them with spb1.s. Vintage loveliness all round.
16.
you had to Be Here Now. see what I did there?
Oasis. The band The Beatles could have been.
17. When The Beatles first recorded at Abbey Road, They were not taken that seriously. They where looked down upon by the older generation as disposable kiddies music. As a result the staff didnt try too hard on recording them as they did their seasoned acts on their EMI roster. It wasnt until they became EMI's golden goose that they where taken seriously.
18. Strangely enough, Its The Beatles 'Come Together' that irks me. While its not difficult to play, I cant get that slide up to the top D to sound smoothly.

20. I,ll wait for the dvd. Incidentally, This thread reminds me of my other barrel scraping thread from a few years back. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/218556-bottom-of-the-barrel-scraping-beatles/page__p__2228790__hl__bottom%20of%20the%20barrel__fromsearch__1#entry2228790
21.
Slightly later than One Step Beyond for me, but one of the first basslines I ever learnt was The Business (B-Side of Baggy Trousers). So many great bass players came out of the 2-Tone scene; Mark Bedford, Horace Panter, David Steele etc..
Oh yes, The Business was an instrumental version of a song called Take It Or Leave It.
22. I have once or twice put some old packs of strings up on here for free to anyone who sends me a self addressed jiffy bag and I put them in the post for them FOC
