I was listing to All mod cons this afternoon, and Bruce Foxtons tone still gets me even after 35 years. A P bass (I think) he was using for that album.

I read somewhere that he was not happy with that sax part. He thought it was poorly played and off key. I think its beautiful

I got a lift to the station from Nine Below Zero bassist Brian Bethell many moons ago. He was in the old Red lion in Brentford watching a blues outfit called the Cobras. I told him I was a bass player too and he asked what I used, and when I told him a Squier P he turned his nose up! Mind you this was 1985 ish.

It is really I suppose, but I just love the grain in the wood and the block inlays

Try not to get too near the mike, you are singing backing vox so you dont want to drown out the singer. Take a step back so you can year if you are pitching correctly.
