1. I,m a bit of a musical Magpie. I borrow bits and peices from other songs and modify them to suit whatever I,m playing. I cover it well enough so that nobody guesses where it came from, and even get a few 'whoops!' from the guys. That was how I learned. Know what the chords are what can fit over them.
2.
That looks like a behind the scenes shot from The Hobbit : Lee Sklar - the Gandalf of groove!
Here he his, looking up the tabs for Moondance
3. He was at the LBGS recently. A few BC'ers met him after his masterclass although I didnt go.
4. The Beatles Everybodys Got Something To Hide, The little bass riff in the middle 8. I love that tone.
5.
I would agree with your post....except for this advice. If muting is required, IMO it is better (safer.. from an injury aspect) to use a sponge under the strings.
I use palm muting with a pick. I have been playing for many years and have never injured my self doing it!!
6. I almost thought it was a 66 slab! It is a dead ringer for one
7. This is a 100% Genuine Fender Mex Jazz bass originally put together back in 1995. It has however been taken apart, had a blowtorch set fire to it and put back together again. Fixed
8. Also, you have to take into account the trussrod access may not be accessable if you cover it up with the wrong one. More on the subject here. 9. Although I have an American Standard P Bass, my main go to bass is a bitsa. It is made up from a body and a great neck from ebay. Apparently from a Korean Squier. I fitted it with a SPB1 pickup set it up, and it was amazing! Well balanced with an outstanding sound to it. In an attempt to give it a vintage vibe I put on some chrome covers. So a cheap bass wins in my experience.
10. I learned something from this documentary too! I always though the bass on Percy Sledge and Aretha's songs was The Duck. I recognised David Hoods name from a Paul Simon album that I had. So now I know eh?
11. I dont like the way the Schallers have to be permanently attached to the strap. This means the strap is now usless for other guitars shoild you need to swap. The Fender ones although quite bulky let you use different staps as and when you like.
12. My new band has got a support slot on Friday 28th. We do mainly classic rock covers. Please come along and cheer us on if your local. http://www.lemonrock.com/gig.php?id=337389
13. I grew up listening to my mums country and western records. Particularly Lefty Frizzell and Little Jimmy Dickens I recall she did get DSOTM when it first came out. I later got into the ska stuff when I was about 15, The Specials and Madness were my favs!
14. Hmmm! Many favouring the washer approach. However, I was looking for quick release, to free the strap with a pop of a button. The washer seems to some of you a bit fiddley to undo in a hurry. May look at the schallers.
15. For the umpteenth time last weekend while singing and playing, the strap came off leaving me clutching the bass while trying to finish the song. I am now considering the straplock route. There are quite a few different ones on the market and I,m a bit overwhelmed by the choice. There are some cheap plastic ones by Dunlop and more expenisive Fender ones which I assume I have to fit to the guitar myself? What does the Basschat world recommend??
16. Macca used a pick with nylon tapes on his Hofner a lot of the time.
17. My favourites are: Fleetwood Mac - Rumours. Where The engineer was telling us they had so many overdubs and the constant spooling of the tape back and forth practically wore out the oxide coating and lost a lot of the high end. John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band, where German bass virtuoso Klaus Voormann plays along to the recordings on the same old P Bass he used on the album, playing chords on one song, and did it note for note
18. Looks like one of them plastic toy guitars for kids!
19.
+1 to that, best bit of the show outside of Mr Sklar for me. I found the whole thing a bit 'meh' to be honest, lots of exotica but not enough meat and tatties for my liking. I would also like to see more in the way of accessories (straps, gig bags, etc) and more than just the one solitary DB on the String & Things stand. Smaller than last year and way smaller than the year before, neither of which were as good as the Bass Show at the Excel IMO. Usual slappity, wackery the minute the lift doors opened and most stands plainly ignoring the 'turn it down/off' hooter. Unless there is an appearance by someone totally awesome next year I won't go again.
Which is why I didnt feel like going this year. And from what I hear I made the right decision.
20. Most pubs have the bands money already counted and left in an envelope which the band collect on leaving. I have never known them take the money out of the till.
21. Legendary producer Ken Scott of David Bowie, Supertramp fame and engineer on Beatles sessions, is holding lectures at Abbey Road studios. That should make an interesting (and rather expensive) evening http://www.abbeyroad.com/News/Article/302/Visit-Abbey-Roads-legendary-Studio-Two
22. I have decided to give it a miss this year. My ears are still ringing from last year slapfest!
23.
Don't know who the band were, a 6 piece (on that stage!) who were excellent, the place was packed and really jumping. A new place on my list of visits when in London. Just about to jump on the train back to Sanity now though, next stop Darlington. London is great, but 3 days is enough every few months for me! Commitments show was fantastic too. Cheers, Rich
Big Joe Louis? 24.
Is there anywhere to eat at these events? or maybe get a beer? Is it one of those 'once your in your in for good' things or can you come and go with your ticket?
There is a pub across the street, the hand and flower I think its called. They do reasonable pub grub. You can get back in and out of the show too. I know as I bumped into Guy Pratt outside the venue having a crafty fag last year.
