IME (which obviously doesn't make it fact), the weight of a wood has a bit of effect other than that it's more than a bit hit n miss.
I like to use a limiter all the time. I use them when mixing to control any peaks. In conjunction with removing the "very lows" (a la thumpinator) I find it gives me more headroom from my amp without any audible changes to my tone.
I can understand a thumpinator on the end of the chain but the dynamics should be fairly well controlled throughout. Something to think about there. It seems pretty conclusive that I'm insane
Hmmm, for me it wouldn't work. I like the idea of seperate channels and I do that to an extent, but I wouldn't want a clean delay mixed in with dirty bass for example. A 4 loop box, each loop with EQ on and an EQ on the output sounds like a very useful box though, i'm sure SFX would knock one up. also, you need a limiter on the output :-p
Would a limiter really be needed on the output though? If so, why?
maybe I should just take the plunge then In fairness, with OH I tend to start with root notes, then build a few arpeggios, maybe with a few passing notes to take me from one chord to another, but I'm certainly not quick, although I am good at keeping time with the basslines I do create. We had a fab playing session yesterday, where I did impress him with some of my bass embellishments. I just don't want to make a tit of myself by playing with more experienced players who think "well I don't want to play with her, she's crap!"
Sounds like you're keeping it simple, you'll probably get more gigs then those of us who like to show off
so are these four channels to be used independantly or will you be mixing them?
The idea is to mix them after but for each channel to have an on/off
You have EQ on your amp??
Yeah, but ideally that particular one will be more flexible. A nice parametric would do the job nicely, possibly rackmounted
Isn't this at odds with your initial statement of "building to a target"? I'm playing devils advocate here mainly
Kinda... but I can strip back once I know what I'll use. And I know
Don't get us wrong, most will agree there's no right or wrong way of doing this.......but I think there are more economical ways lol. So for example, I have two channels, clean and 'dirt'. I have one or the other on, but can mix them too, never use a 'bypassed' sound. Compressor in the dirt channel to increase harmonics to the drive pedals, delays after both channels to effect everything. Chorus/Flanger in clean channel etc etc Si
Oh I agree there's more economical ways but with economy I lose versatility and I don't know what sounds I'll use yet
-
Ah Shep beat me I agree about the Comp pedals, although i'd try it at the start, before the split, certainly try it at the end, but I love the way my CS-2 affects the drive effects when it comes before them. An EQ on each channel? Is a Delay channel so in need of a seperate EQ?....with another EQ before the amp? Si
EQ on the delay so that it can either be the same or different to the clean (may want a different tone for the delay). EQ just before the amp for my overall EQ tone shaping that will always be present
Sorry, but I can't help but think that this is something that Nigel Tufnel would do.

Have you considered the Therapy Channel..?
What pedals go on that? I played a song by Therapy? in a previous band
What are you trying/hoping to acheive?
Dunno yet Basically a aggressive channel Dirt Channel Clean Channel Space Channel Modulation Channel I like the idea of having them on seperate strips for the most part
-
I think you'll regret not being able to apply the modulation and delay lines to each other or the other loops. Do you need different compression on each channel?? Couldn't you jut put a compressor 1st and then the loops come after it. Personally I'd move the compressor to the end sonit levels and limits all channels the same and irons out any volume mis-matching between the loops. Gotta credit you for the craziness though!
I'd want to be able to apply different levels of compression to each, particularly with the distortion vs the clean I was considering an additional compressor at the end too. I tend to use reverbs and delays on clean sounds, modulation I HAVE applied to dirty sounds and liked the results but I tend to apply it to clean sounds more often, that bits kinda "suck it and see". I was also hoping to monitor what each pedal done "volume-wise" and account for that within each pedal, trying to keep them the same throughout. I should have probably said the ideal would be a volume on the end of each strip too just incase of that type of problem, again "suck it and see"

Is this totally insane/stupid or genius? Basically been thinking if I'm going to start building a board then I should be building to a target... is the above Insane/Stupid or Genius?

I like line6 stuff but want to avoid amp Sims so its a maybe Never got on with boss stuff though

Sounds great japhet, I'm hoping to try a few pedals :-) Will add you to the list in the morning

Actually are there any good rack distortions? I might start a rack instead of a pedalboard when I get looking properly
Couple of thoughts: * Cost of cancelling holiday vs remuneration from gigs. Will you be quids out? * Do the trip later - the countries you propose to visit are perfectly nice in September. Fewer tourists around, too, though many hotels, etc., may be closing up at season's end.
But if you cancel the gig you might not get the future work...

Find basses you like and copy that That's what I did
-
Well that's my point - i know there are plenty of folk here who wouldn't even try an ashdown pedal because they couldn't make room for it on their pedalboard...
Yeah... but what about normal people I've met so many basses who don't even know what bass they're playing, I think we count as slightly obsessed tbh
-
Ashdown already have a small(er) vu that they use on the class d amp they do, but even then i think it's probably surplus to requirements. Ashdown's comment on Facebook was that the VU was their trademark, which is a valid point if you're a marketing bod, but to me it's useless in practical terms, and waste of physical space on my pedalboard. Just seems like style is winning over substance...
It'll come down to which they think will sell better in the end I expect
-
But how is that different from other pedals out there? And does it gave a bearing on the size of the pedal?
I can confirm that Behringer vs Hammer the hammer wins I was just hugely impressed by the build quality of them I also like the VU... It's a shiny thing
