Lovely bass! More impressive though... less than a month?! WHOA!

Another parts build, inspired by recent events.
charic replied to Mr. Foxen's topic in Build Diaries
You should make it have parallel strings.... Actually forget that it'll probably feel horrible -
-
Yeah they're not smooth but if you use them for a while they'll toughen your fingers right up
-
Versatility is unfortunately not it's strong point from what I've heard on here. Most people say it does one thing REALLY well.

Alternatively the frequencies will be very different from each. Is it maybe compromised a little by your amp EQ (perhaps cutting some highs?) Also a compressor MAY help a bit.
It would be another Gus, based on the current list prices it would definitely be over £5k. It's spec would depend on what kind of music I was playing at the time of ordering, so either another fretted 5-string taking my favourite features of the two I already have and combining them with a few extras, or a fretless 5-string fitted with an ACG EQ01 preamp and carbon fibre fingerboard.
A Gus is definitely on my "to try" list at somepoint. Didn't realise they were that expensive!
Hmm, already got the bass I want, but I've got big GAS for an Ampeg 8 X 10 and SVT CL, so that would do it nicely!
Would you use the rest to pay for a roadie then?
I can't say that it would bother me. I paid for all the recording and production cost for my bands last single because I had the money available and it was something I wanted to do. The band are grateful and the agreement is that all money from selling the CDs and downloads goes to me until the costs have been covered - a deal that we are all happy with. I've been in too many bands where the only legacy has been a handful of poorly recorded tracks on compact cassette and for this band I want a more permanent records of the music that I am involved with. I ought to qualify my original post by saying that I don't actually need any more basses and if I was to buy another one it would most likely cost more than £5k, so for me the money would be better spent on other things for the band.
I for one would love to know what beast of a bass you would end up splurging on

The string will have more movement over the neck pickup than over the bridge which could probably contribute.
If you have a properly made angled headstock you shouldn't need to be winding loads of string length around the machine heads. From my guitar playing the accepted wisdom is that the amount of string you need to wrap around the machine head post is slightly more than you need to stop the string from slipping. In practice on a bass this works out at 2 turns around the post. As you know most new strings need to have the excess elasticity stretched out of them after restringing. the string wrapped around the machine head post gives this up much more slowly than rest of the string and the more you wrap around the post the longer a string will take to settle into tune. Of coures if you plan to string your bass with a set of flats and leave them on for the next 10 or so years this extra day or two of tuning instability is neither here nor there. For those of us who restring on a more regular basis its a bit more important. Other obstacles like string trees also impact in a negative way on tuning stability. This is why I am unlikely to buy any basses which don't have angled headstocks.
Yeah, number of winds doesn't really seem to make any difference. Just sort of interested me as a possibility.
Not sure if this topic has been covered but I would like to know what you would do in this instance: Say you have £5k to spare, would you buy a boutique/custom bass for that figure or buy 2/3 guitars from that money?
5k? Currently I'd put it towards a house Barring that, custom bass + money towards album/gigging

Got some, like the sound actually. It's slightly different but more importantly they feel nicer to me (if you get a thickish one). My problem is I shred the wood too quickly
Not per se, but if you wind from top to bottom of the tuner post it gives maximum break angle over the nut, so you may need a little more string length to reach the bottom of the post. The string is likely to want to naturally migrate to the point on the post that has the least break angle (IME) hence a string tree might be needed to eucourage the string to the right place....
Bah! Already tried going all the way to the bottom anyway, oh well! BRX, it's already got an angled headstock
if the windings on you tuner can't ...
Does more winds = higher tension then? (I like higher tension )
If this is an instrument in production it needs an engineering solution to prevent it happening, they could quite easily fit a titanium plate on epoxy resin which would double as a common earth and strengthen the front of the instrument. It is not as if this is a budget instrument where such weakness should be expected.
And an american fender is?
It is, the saddles have plenty of travel. I played it personally at NAMM.
Ah ok, in which case it is "simply" very cool

Bloody clever stuff, the only thing that concerns me is that the bridge doesn't look adjustable...
-
Admit it, if you saw one resting in the corner you'd be tempted to flick just one switch and see how long it took them to notice
Well i dunno, I asked the question and that's what they said... I've still got a couple of sets of singles waiting to go on but I'll give them a whirl when I replace these...
Wasn't arguing and assumed it was from you having spoke to them, just confused me

One trick pony if you ask me
Oh, you'll love that!
One day... still need to up my programming skills to be able to make it much more viable though. Also need to hunt down some UK based companies who might be interested in making plugins and the like. I wish there were more companies like TC Electronic and Line6 about too

Help with finding a hollow body/semi acoustic bass *Sorted*
charic replied to Valhalalf's topic in Bass Guitars
Or you can get it refinished Just 'because' -
I know, but it should make the most obvious diff in an anechoic chamber, since the boundaries wont muddy the result. Put a cab on various staging, with and without the Auralex device, and do a frequency sweep through the cab, measuring from a fixed point relative to the cab each time. The diff between Gramma Pad and no Gramma pad can then be shown on different stages/floors etc. As soon as you try this measurement in an acoustically reverberant space the data is muddled by the reflections, and you end up measuring the space not the device.
Yepski, if all goes to plan sometime in the future I'll get to spent significant time work with anechoic chambers
Newtone cannot provide any tension data for their strings unfortunately, but they reckon my .110 .85 .60 .45 would be pretty balanced. They will also make any custom gauge to order, but I don't have the means to test tension either so it would be a bit of guesswork, and a bit of a punt. I'm not sure if they do do flats, I know they will make stainless steel to order though. i think its a minimum of two sets on a custom order.
That doesn't sound right, I recently asked them to increase the tension on my drop - c a little as it wasn't quite as tight as I would like and they got it spot on. Weird...
