One funny thing was he put this large mic in front of Kit but she was having problems seeing her keys properly, it was also very heavy and the mic stand couldn't handle the weight and it started drooping a little bit. Kit asked if there were any alternatives, he said yeah, we can sling a SM58 in front of you. She asked if there would be a difference and he replied that her voice might not sound as lovely, but what the f***, if the great mic is inhibiting her performance, we'll use the Shure, and that's what we did. Still sounds lovely.
Kits got a great voice though from what I remember, a great mic will capture all that detail a good mic will capture a little less. Either way it's still capturing a great voice at the end of the day
...
Sounds like a man who has his method down and uses his ears more than most
Maybe in the studio but not in live situations from what I've been given to understand
Live situations it matters just as much, you just don't have the freedom to put a mic 3 metres away from a cab in a live situation
There are a lot of people who call themselves sound engineers who couldn't mix concrete! They tend to be the ones who are the most nerdy about gear, mic placements and special techniques - the pros a lot less so....
Actually I'm continuing on my research from my dissertation. Was going to go into a load of waffle about my research but cba with it. End of the day you're giving a definitive answer to something that definitely is NOT definitive.
Depends on the sound engineer (I know a lot of the b*ggers) - generally the better that they are the less nerdy they are...........
That's quite a big generalisation but being a sound engineer still means sod all. I like to count myself from within the ranks although would not consider myself "pro". I've tended to leave the mixing behind a little bit and get more into the deep science behind fourier analysis and mic placement as of late.
Speaking with my 34 years of gigging experience (I started young) - I still don't like 'em.... The best guitar player I have ever payed with is also a professional sound engineer. Funily enough, he doesn't like modelling amps and uses a dual rectifier that he modded himself......
Being a sound engineer also means sod all. Sound engineers are still biased. You think bassists can be anal about gear? Go talk to a group of sound engineers! Nerdy goodness I tell ya!

Would somebody like to take to each side of this debate live at the EABB? One can play on their perfectly set up model and we can compare that to the "opponents" valvey goodness?

The second one looks MUCH nicer
True story - a good friend of mine is a very useful guitar player who plays in a band that gigs a lot (and I do mean a lot). However, he is a touch on the lazy side and he used to use a digital combo because he couldn’t be bothered lugging a 4x12 and heavy valve amp around. He used to swear that his set-up was as good if not better as those with boogie half stack or whatever other guitar players playing in similar bands were using despite this obviously not being the case and several people informing of this fact! So what does our hero do? He gets a more expensive modelling amp, which admittedly does sound pretty good in his front room but still pretty weak in a live situation. Eventually he bites the bullet and buys a boutique valve amp (only a 1x12 combo thru) and lo and behold he has a great sound that everyone complements him on and he could not be happier…. And the moral of this story….. a modelling type amp may sound fine in a small room on its own but in a live scenario at least, it will never come close to a decent ‘proper’ amp, even if it weighs an awful lot less!
That's strange because periphery sounded pretty damn massive at Wembley Arena

There's a simple solution. Drown out the PA Seriously thouogh, completely agree in a live situation. On the other hand... Having a good basic tone makes a good sound engineers job easier and a bad sound engineer will have to work harder to make it sound bad. Same goes when recording. On my bands latest recordings the only editing on the bass is the volume! We're using the Compressor from my amp and the EQ from my amp + the ACG and nothing else. Result? Huge sound

They've got a pretty good turnaround rate! I need to try one of these out at some point.

Quite simple really, We're all music lovers etc so there's a fairly high likelihood that we'll be going to some of the same gigs! So here's the gigs that I'm currently going too. If anyone else is going drop me a line and we can hang out! Scar Symmetry - 9th May - Islington Tenacious D - 5th June - O2 Academy Brixton

BC Meetup in London where we make sure we actually meet up?
charic replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in Events
You've given me an idea for a thread. Gig meetups. Simply post gigs that you are going too and other people can PM if they're going too -
They should change the name to "Wand Erection", thereby keeping the same name phonetically, avoiding getting sued, and broadening their appeal to the horny adolescent fantasy geek demographic.
Brilliant!

My guitarist is using SSD (Steven Slate Drums) and they sound great although I'm tempted to go the EZ Drummer Route. On the one hand it means we can do drum work across two computers (SSD) On the other it's added versatility...(EZ) hurrumph

Not just a share 3x the band profits!
I agree. In no way shape or form does my current design have any commercial potential so I'm really effected (give me 10 years). I would imagine that there are large numbers of students who come out of uni with a product they could take into a market, I feel sorry for them.
I came out with an idea and a product to pitch but not all the skills needed. It's going to take a few more years programming experience and research/number crunching and then I'll have to find the right company to pitch too
