Sending a bass from England to Holland the cheapest way
charic replied to Cloff's topic in Bass Guitars
You could each drive to calais but that might work out more pricey. -
Every once in a while you get some cocky little tyke who wants to know why you can't play 'Through the Fire and the Flame' note for note, 'cos he's teachin' 'isself ta play i'. Last time that happened I did a bit of arithmetic with the kid, just to make sure he was aware that the average note speed throughout the song is around 14 notes a second.
Hmm... that doesn't sound right... I'll check the tab I've got. I can play it alright, it's just playing quick iirc.
Cheers guys. Funnily enough,it's not a huge reading gig for me,because I'm going on as part of a 'guest band'. There are full charts for some of the stuff, like the big band style set,but for the most part it's just knowing literally hundreds of tunes. Anyway,it'll be ace to spend most of the winter somewhere nice.
Wishing you smooth sailing, in every sense

The Rodes do a better job IME than the C1000s. AKG are a great brand but that particular mic just sounds so harsh to me -

Fantastic post above, really not a fan of the C1000 on anything though. I just don't like the sound of it at all -
Where I was, it was quite an uncomfortable experience, I suppose it's all about perspective, really
That's understandable. Memorable atleast though? -
The only way around this is to pay your own engineer to do what you tell them to do.
I'm guessing this type of engineer doesn't work for 2 pints of cheapest and a packet of pork scratchings? -
It's a shame that nobody is in the habit of posting to say "I played at X venue last night, the engineer was great to work with and we were really pleased with the sound". It does happen, and ought to be acknowledged. Maybe there should be a thread somewhere for this. I suspect all of the sound guys on this thread are among the good ones, as they're showing every sign of caring about what they do.
Agreed! Ah the difference between a sound engineer and a knob twiddler -
I played in a band called Old Scratch in the early '90s and I think I could find something from every gig we did but I'll filter to the highlights. At our third gig we were greeted by a nutjob in the dressing room who was damp form head to toe, claiming he had been in the Liffey earlier on. He kindly offered to play harmonica with us, which he had in one pocket and, in another, a foot long iron bar which he told us "anyone who f***s with me gets this" and started whacking it off the dressing room wall. The bouncers got him out but it spooked our vocalist (calling him a singer wouldn't be fair, he was probably more of a narrator). Anyway, he went off to calm his nerves, probably a little too much. We were going down like a lead baloon, our brand of improvised doom-jazz-metal thing not going down well with the punters at all, especially the gong solo. The singer from the headline band, who dressed up as a Vegas style crooner with wig and bushy 'tache, came on stage to try and help us out, but our singer wasn't aware that the guy took on a character. He just saw another loon come on stage and try to take the mic from him, at which point he rammed his elbow into the guy's throat screaming "You're mad! You're mad!" and this descended into a full on brawl which, once again, required the bouncers to resolve... on stage... in front of the punters.
Sounds entertaining to me -
51m0n you have written many great and informative posts and I hope you continue to do. My reason for the come back is, unfortunately some musicians and bands think that most sound engineers are close to use less. So when one engineers starts to criticize another’s method it just reinforces that belief. I think you have to be carful of exact statements, because some musicians feel cheated if it’s not done that way and it’s there job to tell the engineer how it should be done. I believe we should educate people that the best way to get a good sound is let the engineer do their job, not fall out amongst ourselves
This is dependent on the sound engineer being a sound engineer though. Unfortunately, on the amateur music scene atleast a large proportion of "engineers" don't have a sodding clue. A good engineer will: -listen to the bands music and comments, if possible listen to a track or two of their cd beforehand too -be polite/patient with a band and explain why certain changes to their sound won't work that night -(in my experience at least) will not sit fiddling with controls all night, past the first song they should be pretty much done -be quick/efficient/organised and generally in control A bad engineer will: -not do most of the above -just do the exact same as they do every night -will not LISTEN All in my experience obviously -

I think that live sound outdoors is incredibly difficult no matter the sound system or source tbf. So many variables that can affect It's insane. Is much prefer to do live sound indoors anyday. -
Just bought an RS210 off Mike. Excellent to deal with, no bother whatsoever

Very very cool! Beautiful as it is. I think backing from additional instruments could maybe add a little something though, maybe a piano and some strings.
-
Never in any circumstance but then I play heavy gauges. Maybe the few to break strings having been playing lighter gauges?
