1. You could run a Sansamp or something to the desk if you wanted a little bit more control over what they do to your sound.
2. Honestly IME around here with a FEW exceptions most engineers aren't engineers at all. They run wires to the desk and move the knobs to the same spot they always run them. I've found the best way to deal with them is just be polite, buy them a beer and ask if you oversee the soundcheck and offer to help out throughout the night. A happy engineer is always a better engineer. Saying that, even though I have a degree in the subject and have probably done upwards of 200 gigs doing the sound for bands most engineers look down on me because I look even younger than I am.
3. Can't you just map the frequency response of a room? Not exactly simple but it's not rocket science either, just time consuming. Then it's a constant for all future tests?
4. I kinda cheat, I just use the Post EQ on my RH450 live and in the studio. Sounds great to me
5.
I know exactly how you feel. I've still not decided what I should do for my final year engineering project and I've got to hand a preliminary report and literature survey in by the end of the year :/
By the time my dissertation came around I knew exactly what I wanted to do just because i'd theorised about it so many times already. I kinda assumed this was normal but my gf is in a similar position to you with no idea what to do either. I find it hard to understand tbh. Hopefully you'll find something that sparks your interest though!
6. Actually what about something using a looper?
7.
If you want the sound of a cab when recording, you'd use two microphones. A Beta 52, D112 or my personal favourite a e602. This is placed right next to one of the speakers (usually top left). Once you have that microphone in place to capture your fundamental tones, you then add the second one. The type of microphone which would be best for this would be a large diaphragm condenser. Something like an AKG C414. Placed between a foot and 2 foot in front of the cab. Mix the two and you'll have the perfect replication (or as close as can be) to the sound of your amp and cab.
Sounds familiar
8. Sad news will any of these bargains be visible over the net? (It's a long trip to just come check) Best wishes for your future ventures!
9. Yeah I use mine and it's well worth it. Pretty lights!
10. I think it mostly comes down to the mic/s used and the positioning. In the studio the best sound I've had from a bass amp was a combination of factors: -AKG D112 < 6" from the cone slightly off centre of the cone -Neumann U87 > 6' from the cab more or less directly infront but I don't think it has a lot of effect at this distance iirc A mix between these two gave me a fairly accurate recreation to what I heard in the room. In a live situation close mic'ing is the only plausible way of mic'ing and I would expect as you say that you will get more the sound of your amp + speaker + some cab rather than amp + speaker + cab. Really it all comes down to mic'ing technique tbh. Imo
11. Yeah, we'd love to find a drummer to join oneday but we've become such close mates in the band it would have to be a drummer who can nail the parts (no easy feat) aswell as being suited to us all personality wise. One day we might come across them but we're not in any rush :-) And liking acoustic drums is hardly a sign of being old!
12. I can see it now you say it, although it's going the opposite way to what id expect
13. That F hole looks very reminiscent of Dingwall
14. Strangely I struggle to tap my foot when sat down
15.
first tour abroad - liking you guys a lot already. DMC are actually my initials so bang on guys. Hope to see you when you tour although i might be as old as your Nan. Cheers and all best Dave
Glad your enjoying it, we just need to rerecord some vocals then the ep will be out for sale, after that were planning on rerecording the tracks and adding a few more (total 7 or 8) for our first album "lessons in divinity". Our fan base is growing rapidly at the moment which is great which hopefully means were doing something right :-p
16. This one: [sharedmedia=core:attachments:34313] Always the ACG
17. Thanks DMC we'll have to try and make it up your way at somepoint it can possibly be our first tour "abroad" And yeah HEAVY metal (also known as Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Melodeath Metal and by some such as my Nan "a bloody racket" which is possibly my favourite!)
18.
Yep, got Thumper and 84 in my Franken-P, and my Warwick Fortress. Love em. Only disappointed Andy can't do anything for my Fenderbird.
How come?
