The ACG is filter based (Although IIRC it's made by John East aswell )

It might be worth seeing if there are any ACG's anywhere near you. You can get pretty much any sound out of the pre-amp once you know how it all works together

And how quick do you want to be able to dial in sounds? One thing I will say about the ACG is it takes a while to learn

Well currently there are a few 6'ers around Yamaha (Ibanez & ESP being two others that spring to mind) probably offering some of the best value for money ones but some variation would be nice without having to go custom. 7 string basses that are non-custom (again off the top of my head) are limited to Conklin and fairly low level Ebay brands. Like you say, just having them around at a reasonable value between the custom and the 'I really hope this is a bargain and not a crap bass' ranges would be quite nice. Of course we have the BC marketplace available to us though where things that are sold are reasonable value and near perfect condition most of the time.

I'd also see if there was anything coming out of the XLR out just to cover all ports of call

Have you checked a signal is actually reaching the amp? Have you plugged into anything else with you bass to check that?

If you are wanting to try different luthiers work then if you are ever in the Cambridge area your welcome to give my ACG a go too although I've not seen him do a Jazz in a long time Mines not a jazz but the quality of work definitely comes through.

Shame it's in London, I work during the week and there's no way I'd be able to make it. Always though his work was stunning

Currently I would probably go Shuker in the same situation. Sei are fantastic build quality but every one I have played hasn't felt quite right to me. Personal preference of course
