I've always wanted to write & record a concept album - a full-blown prog-rock magnum opus with themes, lyrical & instrumental leitmotifs, extended multi-part compositions and lots of incomprehensible time signatures . And I have - well, me & my lovely singist partner have. And I think it's f@cking amazing. I also think I played some pretty good bass on it too.
However - I am British, therefore it's very difficult for me to find & maintain a sense of perspective about this. It occurs to me it's probably absurd, over-reaching and too ambitious for its own good, and that most people would think it was ridiculous, and crap. So underneath the sense of pride & achievement, I can't help having a sneaking feeling that it's really the Top Gear of progressive rock - ambitious but rubbish.
Jon.
Any chance of a listen? I'll be one of the few to post something I'm actually proud of I suppose, grade 5 theory (it's a few years old).

Brilliant! Plenty of listening (when I get a chance) there @Bartelby, I just assumed people would be against it in general as in certain musical circles I have found a certain amount of snobbery when in regards to programmed tracks.

As per header Has anyone had any experience working in a band with "programmed" drums? Specifically in the metal/prog genre as a recent project is leaning this way for quite a few reasons. We've got a guy who is pretty hot on programming drums and it seems an avenue that could be interesting and have a few quirks to make us stand out. I'm sure a lot of people will be against the idea but I see a fair bit of potential in it. Cheers, Rik

I'll put you down as a maybe Everyone thinking of not bringing anything as they deem it "not good enough" nonsense! Bring your stuff if you can, then you can atleast try your stuff through other rigs and / or vice versa. We're bc'ers we're not judgemental
-
I never understood this, I used to make sure the mics were working then just tell the band to play. Theres no point in doing sound individually live anyway because as soon as it's in a band situation it won't sit the same. Usually less than 10 minutes from saying go and we're ready

How do you react when the engineer doesn't do your set-up as you want?
charic replied to ThomBassmonkey's topic in Recording
He should have done yours and his way at the same time. Minimal hassle and versatility in heaps. -

Fair enough -
I use the tuner on the TC most of the time now, so after effects. However I've never really noticed a difference
All the P's I've come across have, could be because I use a strap with a free running shoulder pad. Fairly common complaint IME.
Ah that may explain it, I use a fairly wide leather strap which is slightly rough on the inside

Not a fan of the finish myself

nice one truckstop are you able to pay in advance?
Hi all Had a chat with Charic about this at the Bash at the weekend & wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue. Have a CV Jazz & after playing for a bit, often have pain in my thumb joint & cramp-like symptoms in my wrist/forearm. Charic advised me that he had had a problem like this but had pretty much eliminated it by swapping his thinner width necked bass for a Fender P with a wider neck. Had a go on his P at the bash (thanks for that mate, much appreciated) & it did feel more comfortable, and the neck did seem to fit my hand size better. However, spoke to my teacher about this & he didn't feel it would make a huge difference if I changed my bass to something with the wider neck as he hadn't heard this from any of his other pupils, and the problems would probably lessen over time with practice and increased stamina in my fretting hand/arm (as I have been playing for less than 2 years). What I don't want to do is buy something else and after a few weeks find that it's made no difference to the issues I've had, so do I try it or perserver with the Jazz neck? Any help given is much appreciated. Pat
Hi Mate, Absolutely no problems on letting you have a bash on the pbass. It's what bass bash's are for. I had the exact same issue as you (and noticed we had pretty much the same size hands). Originally it was on my Peavey Millenium BXP. VERY thin neck, obviously I picked it out before I was much of a player at all. Once I had developed my technique I fount that my wrist and forearm would ache over time much like you described. For this reason I can't really play many thin necked basses. IMHO if something feels more natural then it is going to give you a better starting point to build on. You need tools to suit you. Having said this, why not see if there is someone local to yourself with plenty of basses to try? All the better if you can alternate between yours and those.
Its most likely hand positioning and how the bass is sitting. Each bass is different but none should cause your hand to cramp up to that extent.
It's a possibility (and I'm no expert) but Pats playing style seemed fine when I checked it out. It's not really a cramp to be honest, more of a dull ache. You could carry on fine but you know something isn't quite right.
A P bass neck might have a greater radius but the neck dive is really going to put extra strain on your fretting hand.
Neckdive? From a pbass? I can guarantee mine has none whatsoever. Nor have any that I recall trying.

I like how does it balance? Looks like it may be a candidate for neckdive (looks can be misleading mind) -
Take your bass to a shop and try another amp. Some bass amps (especially 'starter' style ones) generally wont sound great. The fact that your E string sounds more muffled than the rest is a bit suspect too..

If you want something a bit smarter looking what about a thin perspex box with holes for the switches which I'm sure you could seal using rubber. Could look funky
