1. think their called "studio rooms" ah i was on audio and music tech, just finished this year. Gud lad on being drunk thats the APU way (itll always be apu) or the kwik-e-mart uni haha gr8 stuff. Admin there is definately questionable luckily i slipped through that fine, sum friends werent so lucky. Pm me details of your band etc maybe we can gig 2getha
2. Hey im an ex ARU student what course are you on? Mulletboy is alright but a tad pricey. If you want a cheaper place and can drive the practice rooms at wyton are worth a look. Infact i have practice next week there.
3.
you're just picky though i think you're right about the spalted wood
When i get fulltime employment its most probably be investing in a custom. So yep defo picky! Planning in progress!
4. To make a drummer quiet there is a few tricks, easiest of which is practice pads on the drums, although theres other ways. Or hire an electric drumkit if the money for the gig is good enough
5. Find out where the meter is and QUIETLY pull it apart
6. Ive always had a thing for spalted wood, its just tough to imagine spalted wood with a finish on. Ive never been a HUGE fan of flame for some reason. Just doesn't strike me particularly I guess
7. I would advice cubase although its against my better nature. If you find you enjoy it I would suggest saving for Pro-tools LE or Logic. Much more user friendly and capable of better results IMHO and wont set you back as much as youd expect these days
8. So soap bar is similar to J style pickups but capable of the further extremeties? Both warmer or harsher than the J pickup allows? Interesting
9. Indeed they do Im just wondering on favourite woods for stains. Im quite partial to quilted maple myself. But i generally dont like trans black quilted maple (feel free if you know a particularly good example of it though!)
10. Im already quite familiar with warmoth having planned another bass for the future with them. Thunderbird, quilted maple top with redburst and 100& wenge neck. This is just a chance for people to show off woods and finishes that they like.
11. P.S. Jeremy Kyle is an awesome show and i love laughing at the chavs. FACT
12. Very well worded, hats off to you sir. I'd also like to point out here that a lot of people on this thread are considering compression as something for taming louder parts to make it the same level as the quieter. This isnt always the case. Compression brings out the fullness of a sound (if done tactfully). So if a player has good dynamic style (able to play consistantly anyway) then a compressor may be used to only compress the louder parts of the sound. When the signal is then restored to its original level the quieter and more subtle parts of the bass sound are now more noticeable and usually full. It may interest some of you to know that valve amps naturally compress signals due to the nature of their construction. The best compressors are usually considered to be valve powered too. If you want to hear what difference a compressor can make, record a bass drum and leave it uncompressed. Then see what a varying levels of compression can then do to that signal. Programs like audacity are great for this. Personally I love what compressors can do to a sound in the hands of someone who listens. However give it to an idiot guitarist who'll just turn things up on full and you'll hate compressors forever
13. My band are currently looking to start gigging, we havnt yet got around to recording. We're called "scream in unison" although we dont scream (work that out i cant :s) We practice at wyton so if your interested in having a support act your more than welcome to come visit (or come visit anyway, pm me and ill msg you when our nxt practice is) Its mainly heavy rock stuff. So yeah, plugging over
14. Planning a custom build and im trying to think of what woods i should have, i know i want them staining to very specific colours. Top half trans black (or find black wood would be better) bottom half see through bright green. Ideas? Also any other stained woods (no repeaters please) this is wood porn
15. Ok lets see what peoples definitions on what each kind of pickup is like to sound like P (neck position) P (bridge position) Reverse P (neck) Reverse P (bridge) J (neck) J (bridge) MM (neck) MM (bridge) Soapbar (neck) Soapbar (bridge) This could end up being one for wiki
16. Compressors are especially great with a pick, reduces the click of the plectrum and brings out some of the actual sound of the bass while then keep the higher frequencies generated by the click. In rock music, compression is used on everything... fact
17. Saw a guy playing one of these live, was really lacking presence imo but it could of just been his setup, also seemed to be missing a low end. Was quite unimpressed. But maybe he couldnt EQ
18. The Sei Original looks absolutely awesome but i think that may well be my 2nd custom build as im too intrigued by alans work at acg
19. Angry Again by megadeth will probably stretch you nicely taught me a lot about technique. Also if you want to work on speed i would suggest black lung by rancid. I will be surprised if you manage either any time particularly soon but its in the learning that matters IMO
20. Im always tapping, but then im primarily a keyboard player. Theory is a good thing to learn but dont overdo it. Get some new music and just listen to it as a whole. Try tapping your fingers at doubletime to the rhythm and see how long you can keep it up, then try n beat that time later. Other than that all the stuff i can think of has been mentioned, enjoy ur trip
21. Im very anti tort myself. How about black abalone? Could look classy I reckons http://www.pickguards.com/colors.htm
22. Why not just get an audio interface? Or do you need it on the move? That way you have upgradability.. I have an interest in recording so i figured i would cover I would cover as many bases as i could. However it sounds like you just want to record twiddling and pick out parts you like and work on ideas.
23. Hmm for the price range im unsure. But I dont like the look of those Ipod things either. Personally I have a korg D888
