Say the rest of the band are dead against IEMs but I want to give it a shot for myself, what sort of setup would I need? Guessing an ambient mic and bass DI to a little mixer would do it?
I tried this myself with "some" success. I'm actually wanting to do this for rehearsal (as the PA can't keep up with the rest of the band... small room loud band) so huge setup times are out of the question

Could you just get a Line6 Helix or AxeFX and do it all there?

Behringer DeepMind12 Synthesizer - New 12 Voice Analogue Synth
charic replied to HowieBass's topic in General Discussion
I'm kind of interested for a few sounds but this will have to be very cheap to actually tempt me fully I think -
I keep seeing a company called BandScrimsUK on facebook a lot. Not affiliated in anyway and not sure on their pricing
Probably just a decent mix, since there's nothing remarkable about the keyboard sounds themselves - they're just bog standard polysynth string sounds. What I find helps though, is if the synth has a high pass filter. The presets on a lot of gear tend to be very "full" sounding so they sound good in the shop. For recording I tend to drop a lot of the lower frequencies out to make pad sounds cut through without overwhelming everything else. In the absence of a high pass filter, try upping the octave on any oscillators that are lower than the highest one in a patch, or turn off the sub-oscillator if there is one. This is all assuming you can you can edit the sounds, and that it's based on subtractive synthesis. If it's a fully preset keyboard, then it's a graphic equaliser to drop out some of the bottom end or boost the higher frequencies.
I'll have a look and see what I can find! The amount of options on the Kronos is a tad overwhelming. Although I mostly look at sample based sounds at the moment and hadn't really thought to look at the synth based sounds. So much tweaking to play with! I've created some new patches reducing the attack dramatically so now it smacks you in the face a bit

I wonder if there's any dingwalls that would be close... although the scale length would obviously be out
-
Any idea what is making the string sounds here cut through? I've got some amazing sounds on my keyboard (Kronos 2) but I can't seem to make it cut through quite like this. Any ideas? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_Ys_W7ySkM

Behringer DeepMind12 Synthesizer - New 12 Voice Analogue Synth

The question is, will you be able to get any decent sounds out of it... and what's the cost? -
They're not bad but not brilliant. I never lacked balls or grunt from my old one but by Christ was it heavy. You should be able to get a decent sound out of it, I would stick to either the clean or rock setting. Leave the deep button alone and crank the low mids
Hi people, well I was on Talk Bass bass for a coupla months
What's a "Talk" bass and how many strings does it have?
When people sell their basses are they not putting a valuation on it?
In the for sale section it's fine
-
Unapproved the last few comments as we don't allow valuations on the site I'm afraid
If you are looking for 'rock' clothes...and your budget will stretch then I recommend Wornstar in the US. You can get their kit in the UK, but none of the one-off gear they do, and its bloody expensive too. I've had a denim jacket modified by Tina (Custom Creations by Tina)...see the link below...she is ace. She aged it, fitted the patches I sourced, replaced panels with leather and camo material...proper rock idiot stuff! https://www.facebook...ons%20by%20tina There are loads of places online that will do custom stagewear. It all depends on budget and timeframe.
Thanks for the FB link, i'll definitely check that out!

Managed to source one top from etsy Next up may be making my own
All of the above is good advice. Whatever the band's image you should be able to find stuff from high street, markets, charity shops.
It's a bit more difficult when you're going for a post-apocalyptic style vibe but we're probably going to buy as close as we can and then alter them
-
That's the creepiest selection of clothes I have ever seen.
I strongly suggest you don't try searching stagewear on the same site...
-
New band trying to work on it's image ready for our next photoshoot and first gig. Just wondered you folks manage to find your stage clothing?

You're doing things the wrong way round I'm afraid. You have a budget but not a lot of idea about what you want in a bass. To save on heartache (and financial losses) try as many basses as you can (right up to the £10k mark, you only live once), list what you do and don't like about each. Following that look through and see what each cost, what you did and didn't like and try and decide which one you realistically want. Example : You try a whole load of basses and you find you have 5 clear favourites. Ibanez £300 new : You like the skinny neck, but the sound is limited, not a fan of passive basses. New pickups may improve this Ibanez £500 new : You like the skinny neck and it's got a great sound, the active circuit is awesome. Shame about the looks though Ibanez £700 new : You love the skinny neck and the sound, the active circuit is great. Looks great too Yamaha £500 new : You don't like the skinny neck but a great sound, you really like the active sound. Looks alright though Fender £1200 new : You like the skinny neck and the sound, plus it looks great, the passive sound on this you surprisingly like For the fun of it you tried a fodera too Fodera £10k new : You don't like the neck or the sound... plus it fugly eurgh why to people buy these From the above you can now look at your budget : Lets say you have £300, you could buy the cheap Ibanez new but you know you're not fond of the sound, the £500 Ibanez is much more your style so you'll keep an eye out for the second hand one which tends to come up in budget. In the meantime you might also keep saving just incase the £700 Ibanez comes up second hand. From doing this you have also found : You like active basses with skinny necks although you do like "some" passive basses with the right pickups. You now know what you're looking for

I wonder if business cards would be a way past the fly posting guff?
-
You can use flyers in a targeted way, saving money and avoiding littering. We spread a handful of Junkyard Dogs flyers on tables when the band gigs a new or new-ish venue. They don't list any gigs, so they never expire, and instead they have all the links to the website, the social media and Lemonrock, and a QR code for reaching the website with your mobile phone at a stroke.
From what he's said he's talking more about popping by the venue for the few days beforehand Although the type of fliers you've mentioned aren't a bad shout at all!
-
Facebook shares, Instagram, not so much twitter as it is SO busy with junk. I like old fashioned flyers but I've not seen a band use them, apart from big bands advertising huge gigs, for some time. Miss the days of going 'flyering' at 12am and steering clear of the authorities.
My latest project will be doing this, guitarist is convinced it still gets good results
Facebook is engineered so that you don't get much coverage unless you pay them to promote your posts.
In essence yes, but there's quite a bit you can do to increase your coverage on facebook too. It's not fool proof but it does help, I'll try to write something in the next week or so. Also, check out songkick. Very useful tool
