1. If you can get back to me on program version I should be able to drum something up. Also it might be worth dropping Skol303 a line as he's a reason veteran. I don't have any experience of live recording into reason though. I stopped at Reason 4 (I think) before you could do this
2.
It's just music. And when did micro-timing become more important than note-choice for bass players?
It can change the feel of a song quite significantly though. It's one of those "feel" factors IMO. Note choice obviously has the bigger effect though
3. Decent monitors are nowhere near as important as knowing your environment though. Some people can make amazing mixes on theoretically crap monitors just because they know them so well. Horses for courses and all that. Problem at hand though is software. Luckily we have a few Reason bods on here and I've used it enough to help so this could end up quite a good resource on the forum. Fire away fumpinator!
4. As above really, that hard pushing / rocking sound is usually from sitting ever so slightly in front of the beat. That groove type sound is from sitting just behind it. JPJ is a weird one because imo the Drummer somehow sits behind the beat while usually (but not always) the bass is just in front, theoretically it shouldn't work but it does I try to practice both, and I'm having to learn to switch between the two in the same song lately which really messes with my head
5. Reason is actually pretty easy to use in comparison to most music software. Once you get over that first hurdle you'll be flying. What version are you using and what are you trying to do at the moment?
6. If you have a digital village locally they'll have a bunch of studio style headphones for you to try and they should see you right (plus they price match).
7. What monitors will it be running? I only ask because if you can get something specifically designed to run with them then that would be the "safest" bet
8. You could sign up to the unsigned guide for a huge list of contacts
9. If you don't want to fall out of practice with the bass then practice your left hand only technique Get well soon!
10. Skol303 returned to glory AGAIN last month with another excellent entry and picked the picture below. Who's going to knock him off his high horse then eh.. eh?! (just kidding Skol, we love you really). The usual gumph : A picture will be posted by the previous months winner to act as inspiration for that months piece. The piece should be no more than 5 minutes long and should be composed and recorded in the same month as the piece in question. To be clear, any instruments / sounds can be used although copyright should be followed for obvious reasons. Also Basschat T&C's should be followed within the actual recording so : [i]6. 11.
PS: Rick... time to get April's thread up and running?
... I thought I had done it! I must have forgot to hit post
12.
You have to have PA support for outdoor gigs. A backline won't cope on its own.
That depends on the backline
13. Bass is with Jon now after a fairly scary car journey (bloody satnav is out to kill me I think),we're still working out what to do about the decal but that's the only sticking point now. We've decided to reuse the tuners from the MIM neck as there's nothing wrong with them You should've seen the look on my bands face when I turned up with my 6 string instead of my precision! Priceless
14. For drop C I get a set made by Newtone. They're the standard thicknesses but the tension has been altered. Only disadvantage is there's a bit of a lead time on them (PS. You'll probably need atleast a 110 on the C)
15. My various basses can all sound similar to each other or wildly different, I tailor my EQ to suit how I want each to sound with each song. I've now got BASS EQ - > Amp (Gain, Overdrive, Compressions, 4 band EQ & Graphic EQ + Deep / Bright settings) -> Effects(With Parametric EQ) -> Post DI The day where I have a sound engineer who gives enough of a crap to try and recreate everything in the middle is the day when he realises he's better off with the Post DI anyway
16. Looking to move on my RH450 which has served me well for the last year or so. I love this amp but it was time for a change. I'll post up pictures when I manage to snap them. The bag has seen better days (got the usual problem of a tear at the top, which I might try an sew up before this sells. Also got the RC4 which is currently retailing at £129 to throw into the bargain Will consider P/X with a Darkglass B3k and/or Boss OC2 to complete my board
17. Get a decibel meter and say if this goes above x then we're too loud?
18.
Haha! I think the day when you commission a custom bass is the day your best friend should punch you in the face. Like your art is so unique it requires a bespoke instrument. Your art as a bass player - no other instrument screams 'accompaniment' like the bass guitar, nobody needs a bespoke bass built to their own specification unless they have a disability and require a uniquely accessible instrument.
What's wrong with wanted something even if you don't need it?
19.
I have a pair of the Alesis M1 MK2 Actives that I picked up from ebay for £113 second hand, had them 6 months and they've been perfect. I think they're nice, to my ears they sound more neutral than my friend's Yamaha HS50s which sound much more forward and agressive, they also go much deeper.
You see, I'm not a fan of the Alesis stuff and love my HS50ms. Kind of proves the each to their own thing
20. It depends on your learning style IMO, when I start learning something I make it as difficult as possible but practice rigorously so I started on heavy gauge strings with a high action. If you want to make things a bit easier on yourself then go with lower gauge strings with a low action. What type of music are you hoping to play?
21.
Oh I agree, there are genuine sellers on here. I've just noticed, (with being an ultra cautious buyer) that there were a few sellers who didn't seem so 'genuine'.
Well any report is is closely scrutinised so if you have any concerns thats your best bet
22. It mostly comes down to personal taste and experience. If you have a list of Monitors you want to try give your local digital village a shout and they usually have a room where you can hook up about 4 sets of monitors simultaneously (with switches) to compare. They're good guys and they've always pricematched for me
23.
Jesus Christ, not 'Anal Farmyard 2' again??
Caravan Capers I believe was the latestest installment
