1. cheers folks small boing - the current version of this guitar (with the updated BB2 preamp) is getting on for 600 quid and you don't get a hiscox (actually, i might keep it to keep my new guitar in, but i haven't got a new guitar yet).
2. is it an ABM you've got? If so, the advice I was given about the VU needle hitting the red was - don't worry about it I use an american P bass mostly these days and I can't run my input gain at more than about 11 o'clock without the needle wanting to fall off - can't say i'm sure it's a problem tbh
3.
I find it funny that people take more than one guitar to gigs. I have pedals for that kind of thing.

Are they long, thin roundwound pedals with a ball on one end?
I was thinking the same thing - or do you have a pedal that goes "has anybody got a spare bass" down the mic if you bust a string?
4. hello Sarah Lady-Bassist-From-Staffs. I play with a pick too.
5. you should be able to get an AB box in most music shops or check ebay/online/whatever - ART do one, EHX do a switchblade, there are loads of manufacturers that do 'em - don't worry about A/B/Y, it shouldn't make a difference unless you stamp on Y all of a sudden and everything goes quiet (you could potentially plug your tuner in there) edit: and a standard A/B will do the trick - just cos it says it's 1 input and 2 outputs, there's no reason why you can't just turn it round and make it work the other way - I have a red onion one and that's all i'd done with mine.
6. no it won't, i agree but with the master vol up to 3 o'clock, it's got a bit more in it before you run out of headroom. What did you set your input gain level at? I personally think you need to start looking at PA support.
7.
Very very impressed by how tight it sounded, despite being used with the master volume at about 3 o'clock. That was my only gripe, I'd like a bit more volume from it so I can back of the volume (a little).
sorry to state the obvious, can you not just turn it up a bit?
8. I've got a Diago gigman for bass and a Flightcase Warehouse (ie Spider Engineering) large or possibly XL board for guitar - the Diago is extremely well put together IMO although I think if I used it on tour, I'm not sure how long it would stay together, but I've found it to be very good, a nice size and well made. The flightcase warehouse board is f*cking humungous, built like a tank and looks to be largely indestructible. You need to work out a way of fixing your pedals to the hexboard - I carpeted mine with velcro and used carpet glue to keep it tacked down properly. The biggest problem I have is that full of pedals, it weighs more than my cab - which is a lot. The other problem is, that I had to put another bit of hexboard or ply underneath the board that the pedals are on, so I could get the pedals closer to the edge of the board - without the board underneath to raise the pedalboard, the input/output jack sockets were below the edge of the case and you couldn't plug them in. I'd say it's pretty much indestructible in normal use though
9. i can't tell the difference once the drummer kicks in. best live sound i've had in ages i got on sunday with one of the best sound men i've used in ages.
10. electrolube - it's more expensive than servisol but it doesn't leave any residue
11.
Someone's angry at their inner gay tendencies! How's about I come round and teach you the joys of receiving anal "rape"?
me? I'm just generally angry you're more than welcome to come round and have a go, but if this is you, then i'm not too worried
12.
P is masculine, J feminine. P players are gay?
you could come round my house and say that if you want - i'll give you a lesson on how it feels to be hit in the face with the lower bout of a P bass
13. f*cking hell - 60/40 in favour of P? what's the world coming to? I am, and will remain, a P man
14.
in all fairness "you don't get if you don't ask".
yes, i agree i do think that if you say "yes i'll definitely have it" and then change your mind without informing the seller, then that's a bit low - but circumstances change and i think whilst it should be avoidable, sometimes people can say, "look, i'm really sorry I can't buy x, y, z like i said i would. hope you don't have any trouble shifting it". if somebody throws you a low ball offer, you don't have to take it personally at all. just politely decline it
15.
If you are selling something it is only worth what people will pay for it. Sell it, keep it but do it quietly. Arrogant offers are something else. Just dont sell that person anything ever. Rant over.
what he said
16.
pm me his name please ben, when I had my trans red sr4 up here I got exactly the same sh*tty type of offer and I would like to know if it's the same guy. It's even worse that the reason he is going back on the deal is that he found a cheaper one... I'm of two minds on this name and shame business, but is it fair that he found and bought a VBA for less than we had agreed without getting in contact with me? I mean at the end of the day, he might have gotten a bargain and more power to him for nabbing it... but the bit that is really getting to me... is he could have asked me first to see if i'd at least bring my price down to somewhere near. But of course this is the internet, he might just be some little kid who doesnt even own a bass *shrug*
but if the same person has already made you an offer on something that you'd knocked back (i'm speculating that you had an offer on two items from the same person), i suspect that they probably didn't want to contact you again with a cheaper offer, because you would have thought they were taking the p*ss and would have said no. I don't know whether an agreement to buy constitutes a contract of sale in some form before any money/equipment is exchanged (I suspect not) - maybe it's time to have terms and conditions put in place by the admin for selling and buying? Life's too short - it's a pain in the arse that these things happen and suggesting the above dampens the community spirit - as does reneging on a deal, but what can you do? oh and guys that have been messed about (Chris et al.) I'm not all misery, I'm sorry you've been mucked about, but these things happen. Happened to me last week but it wasn't the end of the world really.
17.
3. Due to not being famous or rich we shift(ed) it in a hire transit van...... ..........Transport: hiring a van costs £100. No one wants to drive it/take it back the next day etc. .......7. After doing this a few years you know have a feel for the prices, and so we charge a 1-off price to the client and then pay the PA guy ourselves. We find this works best because otherwise you get "£350 for a PA!?!?!; Nah mate, my cousins got something you can use". ALWAYS retain control of what PA gets hired. Good thread. Interesting stuff.
this is exactly the sort of thing i am looking for and pretty much sums up my thoughts on PA ownership of big rigs. good man! keep 'em coming! (and yes mods, that was a good idea /\)
18. FWIW, I think you've done the right thing. I hate to see instruments gathering dust as well. I just sold my JV P bass - i went through all the old "it's an investment" and thought of reasons not to sell it, but I couldn't think of a good one. Don't piss the money up the wall though - mine is going back into upgrading other instruments. I wanted a 70s P, but now I can't really see a use for it when I've got another bass that will do the job
19. The clearout continues as I am determined to get down to two electric guitars, two electric basses and two acoustic guitars. This one has got to go then - solid spruce top, think the back and sides are laminated cherry (can't be 100%), rosewood fingerboard and I think it's a mahogany neck and has a Bband preamp/eq thingy which has volume, bass and "edge" and an little LED light that comes on when the 9v battery is low. The crap cover for the battery broke off not long after I got it so it was replaced with a proper slide out battery clip. It was recently set up at Sheehan's in Leicester and a strap button fitted to the neck heel. I bought it new in 2001 - the serial number stamped on the back of the headstock starts "01" so I'm assuming it was made in the same year - it sounded good when I bought it but it's got nicer as it's aged. If you don't know Simon and Patrick (I don't personally ), they're part of the Seagull/Godin group - all made in Canada - I don't know if they're "handmade", but it's a good guitar. I'd like somewhere in the region of £300 with it - I can stick it in a Hiscox PRO-GAD case for another 50 quid (cost me nearly a ton). If you've got a higher end electro acoustic guitar you'd consider parting with, I have readies available to put into another one (it's all part of a downsizing plan!). I'd ideally like something European, dreadnaught sized, with a good preamp and pickup, ebony fingerboard and a spruce top and solid back and sides. It looks like this:
20. cheers men - yes that's the kind of thing - ideally it should fit anything up to 4 mic cables and 4 mains cables under. i will investigate the links.
21. morning do you have any recommendation where to get the rubber cable ramps that you can cover your cables with when you have to lay them on the floor in a venue. We played on saturday night and had to run the cables across the main entrance and taped them down with large quantities of gaffa so they didn't trip anybody up - but the rubber mat/ramp things would be the ideal solution. Any good suppliers?
22. those of you that use ER-20s, do you use "Elacin" or "Etymotic" branded ones and can you tell any difference? I had previously used Etymotic Research ones which I thought were very good, but I bought the Elacin branded jobs on Friday night - I don't know whether it's just using a new set of ear plugs, but these Elacin ones are particularly uncomfortable currently. Maybe they'll bed in, but I think the custom ones are beckoning this month
23. cheers guys, keep them coming - i noticed i put two "5s" in the original survey. oh well. I think it may be worth talking to a local pa company about a discount for regular stuff.
24. i'm sure this has been covered before, but in the 20 pages that come up when I search for "PA", I can't find anything. It's not just for the functions or covers bands, but it's aimed really at those that own their own fairly big systems for big rooms and functions of up to 300 or 400 people. If you've got two minutes, can you answer the below questions? 1) do you own your own PA? If "NO" go to question 5 2) if Yes, what size is it (eg how many watts and how many components) 3) do you transport it to gigs yourself or do you get your roadies/engineer to load it into the van and set it up before/as you get to the venue? 4) do you have your own soundman? 5) if "NO" to Q1, do you hire a PA yourselves? 5) if "YES" to the above, what do you pay for an engineered PA of a suitable size for the venue you're booked for and what does that cost? Does it include lights? 6) again for the hirers, do you build the cost of hiring the PA into what you charge your client. Do you pay roadies out of that as well? I think that's it, I'm interested to know what others do as we have a great big almost 9k PA and I think we'll need a transit van to move it around in - which we don't have. I'm wondering if it's worth us selling our PA (obviously it's a joint decision, as yet undiscussed!) and hiring them for future big gigs. we have all the kit to do the pubs, but the big stuff is potentially sweat making, especially in the summer pre-gig, and who wants to be soaking and stinky before you've even played a note.
