1. ok, so it's not a bass, but I picked up a strat last night and the guy I bought it off had sprayed the name of his old band with a stencil onto the case. I am extremely inexperienced in matters relating to paint so I would like to know what would be the best stuff to get it off. Any suggestions? He says turps would shift it, but I really don't think it will.
2. i likes that - what scale length is it? For the want of money...!
3.
Couldn't agree more, unless it's cheap enough to take a risk on. They're all different to play.
Is there that much to differntiate between them? I bought my USA (black/black/maple mmmmmmm) on ebay and it plays as well as any that I've picked up in the shops. Maybe I'm a ham fisted goon when it comes to playing the bass, but I would have thought that CNC machining would make every instrument fundamentally the same - I appreciate that the particular bit of wood that your bass was made out of can differ slightly to the next one, but surely they are made within certain tolerances - the major factor for me is in QC and I would have thought that they were made out of good enough bits that any decent set up would sort any minor problems?
4. we'll usually make some effort to contact or request that the promoter contacts the other bands for a drum kit share if necessary. If I know the bass player in the other band personally, then I'll either offer them the use of my rig or ask them nicely in advance of the gig if I can have a lend of theirs. Don't really have any need to scope out a venue - most of the places we play, we've played before!
5.
.....apparently has something to do do with Tom Cruise.
help me out - i'm not clever enough to work this out on my own
6. i use the mini 15 (in conjunction with the abm300) and it's very good. No it's not particularly light, but it's not actually very heavy either and an easy lift - for me anyway.
7.
Tort with rw. Black(/white/black) with maple IMO.
I'm with you on that one.
8.
my fender moulded logo case has lasted 4 years now and is good as new. my hiscox case lasted about a year and fell apart. both did the same tours and shows in that year. however, the hiscox provides a lot more protection (when its in one piece).
Don't Hiscox put a lifetime guarantee on their stuff? They should have replaced that surely?
9.
i would assume it's partly because a lot of the people who use rehersal room equipment don't show a lot of respect for it. every time we go to reherse the amp there has everything turned up to 11, input volume all tone controls, graphic eq and master volume. the amp is more than loud enough at just over half volume. the sad truth is, if it's not theirs they don't care. and most people who do care for equip bring their own.
Bang on there I think - and those that do care for gear and don't want to use their own and prepared to pay top whack for rooms with good kit.
10. I've got a moulded case that I got with my Precision and it's shocking. It's the one with the moulded logo and not the red sticker one (I've got an old one with the red sticker for my strat which is actually very good) and it's falling to bits already. The lining - polystyrene and furry carpet is falling out and the two halves don't line up properly when you try and shut it. When it finally falls to bits, I will buy another Hiscox. If you want a tweed one, you'll probably find a copy for about 50 quid
11.
You are quite correct sir. And yes £150 - you heard me correctly sir. Your case is much nicer. I need a 2 and 3 to complete my collection. So lock your doors.
What? £150 for one of those sh*tey black cases? Christ I think I'm going to sell that one then and buy a Hiscox and something nice with the profits! That Westone is long gone now
12.
You and I both too far away to collect though. If the bass went for say 70 'twould be worth buying for the case then reselling - these can fetch anything up to 150.
What? 150? What? *Holds heart, then head, then heart again, then sits down* I don't think that's an original case - I had an original Westone case with mine which was a brown tolex and plywood job, with a westone silkscreen logo on it and it fitted the bass properly. That black one doesn't look like it's fitted to that bass - around the bottom, waist and horns mainly. I've got something almost identical that my Gordon-Smith guitar came (but guitar sized obviously). I don't know for definitel, but I think the shell is plastic (with possibly some laminate ply in it or something) and is probably about the same age as the guitar - '83. My Westone case looked like the below: Thunder Boy up there has a couple of these cases for his Westones as well.
13. we use a few studios depending on what day of the week it is and where we can get it. One studio has one room available with a Trace SMX1215 or something (it's v loud and has a 10 band graphic EQ - you might be able to identify), another studio we use has ashdown and Ohm heads and Ashdown and Hartke cabs and and a trace combo and one studio we've been to once (or possibly twice) has Mark Bass, Ashdown, Ampeg (including a fridge), SWR and Hartke stuff - but it's not the cheapest place to rehearse.
14. oh ok cool - i didn't know about that - so the cloth is the carpet side of the velcro then? The other option I've seen for about the same price is the Stagg versions - ABS plastic - that you can get from badlands guitars for about the same price, but they're a fair bit smaller than that
15. Has anybody used TKL cases? They're the usual plywood/tolex construction, but the seller of this item has a few sizes available and they look like reaonsable prices. I was thinking of replacing my little boss case with a board that I could put some different shaped/sized pedals on.
16.
Almost right mate, we currently jam in Coventry, but Bear keeps his gear in Leicester as we both teach there.
Sorry - I forgot to add the words "Drum Kit" to my original post!
17. i've got a sneaking suspicion the skabilly rebels is residing in the storage room at a certain studio in leicester. unless i've not read the skin properly
18. go and ask your local guitar shop - they're always chucking them out. Other than that, you could go to a bike shop although it would need a bit of adapting. Anything really, i've sent em in boxes i've adapted that had ikea furniture in
19. yeah I would - although I have received a couple of guitars/basses that were just sent in the hardcases and they turned up completely intact and some loony sent an unpadded gig bag with a guitar in off with parcelforce - no box or anything, which turned up with the address label hanging off and no more than a broken tuner. Not that I'd recommend doing that. Every one I've sent has been in a cardboard box and most of them were in hardcases too.
20. Nick, my band had a bash at covering this before we decided it didn't really fit in with the other material. Our bass player (it's the band I play guitar in) didn't use an Octaver or a 12 string bass - in fact I doubt he knew that it was a multi string bass or whatever the technical term is. It sounded alright anyway - I don't know whether that's actually because it sounded alright - we gigged it a couple of times and it went down well enough - or my attitude towards it is a bit more "wing it and hope". The other thing I think I did was to play his part on the guitar an octave above - which is probably what your octaver would do. Sorry I can't be of any further help. I never really liked doing it anyway
21.
Didn't you get the socks I sent you?
I did but they were the wrong size, it's the thought that counts though!
22. i would've had one a while back when i had the cash, but i spent it on other stuff! I had also hoped that i might have been bought one as a small but generous present - but that doesn't seem to have happened!!
23. my ashdown rig? and you promise not to break it in retaliation?
24.
Is the VWH 'whiter' than the OWH then? I'm still curious as to which I'm gonna choose. Also (to anyone out there), is there still talk of a bulk shipment from ishibashi going on?
If I can raise the cash, then yeah I would still be up for it - although if I start buying basses this close to Christmas, there could be trouble
