1. Si that post is from 14th Feb!! It's Gaf - who posts on here as gafbass02 or something like that. Good spot though!!
2. JV's were apparently made out of USA parts that had been shipped out to Japan to speed up the construction process. It's got an "EX" stamp on the neck which I understand means Export, although whether this means the part was for Export to Japan or Export from Japan as a complete guitar once it had been made, I have no idea. It is nice though - the neck's better than my old E series precision and it sounds as good as the modern USA one I've got.
3. Cheers Nik - I can't help thinking 3 black basses is over the top - mind you, if I'd have been able to buy yours before it sold, it would have been four!
4. that's alright that, but it's not a precision body - did you mean a squier jazz body and mim neck?
5. So, with my E series MIJ Sunburst precision and the Westone Thunder III gone, I'm left with these 3, which to be honest is probably enough anyway! Squier JV precision - the date on the neck and the little plastic fender shim is April 83, although as it's a solid colour, I suspect it was produced May 83 on. This is the one I've been having pickguard problems with. It's sort of alright at the minute, having heated it up with the iron, squashed it and then snapped a bit off (which I've taped back together). I've not found a replacement pickguard that fits (the USA ones might, but don't have the holes for the thumbrest) so I may get a Sims one made up - although it's the best part of 50 quid - gah! Anyway, here it is - it's bloody lovely, great neck and in great nick to boot. I bought this when I decided that I couldn't afford a stingray - 2004 S1 Precision. I don't think the S1 switch warrants being on there, but never mind eh! Then I bought this when I realised that I could afford it after all. Imported from the States, before tax it was less (shipped) than the Black precision - another 100 quid in duty, but it was well worth it.
6. looking at the ebay listing for these things, I'm guessing they thought that they would sell more strat pickguards than anything else and the majority of stratalikes would be bathtub routed - which would in theory accomodate a battery - mine won't and neither would my 2 p's
7. I think it would be a good idea that - it would be a fix for any mid gig battery problems in active basses anyway
8. wire it up to the mains!! (no don't) Actually, has anybody come up with a system whereby you can use the phantom power coming out of a desk and into a DI to power a bass in the event of battery failure with active circuits and light up scratchplates and stuff?
9.
Thanks, DirtyStatic... We actually planned that shoot - And would you believe the results came off my camera phone?? I like the jazz band one, although, everyone's going to look at the gorgeous Nicki Allan rather than us!
yes - but only because of the colours - otherwise, I it's a grand pic and it's great quality for a phone. Me and the brother below - I'm the one with the job
10. i think the addition of Odour Eaters would make them non-original and possibly affect their value. he's bought stuff like 70s nikes from jumble sales for a couple of quid, taken them onto the trainer forums and got £200-£250 for them the jammy little bollox. I think his last imac came from buying trainers and stood him at less than 100 quid.
11.
Collecting something as innocent as bass guitars pales into insignificance when compared to what a lot of people might be spending their money on...drugs, women/men, alcohol, gambling etc. Personally, I regard my basses as just another form of money..they can be sold, swapped etc and they give me pleasure.
I'm sort of with you on that. I'm not into the habit of buying and selling stuff for income, but it's nice to know that if i need some quick cash or fancy something different, I can sell one of my instruments to fund whatever's needed (although I did recently think 4 was too many and sold one!!) My brother collects trainers - vintage/retro/ltd edition stuff mainly. He must have a couple of hundred pairs now, but again some of them have more value than one of my basses and he treats them like a currency
12.
Especially when he can't even spell squier.
Oh ar yeah - I didn't even spot that!! Still..... *rubs hands together*
13. I know Squier JV prices are going up, that that's a lot of money really - isn't it? www.ampguy.co.uk/sales.htm Have a look on the top row of stuff, right hand side.
14. everybody I know who has said "I don't need a backup" or "I've never broken a string on stage" has almost immediately gone out and broken a string. The bass player in my other band did that at our last gig.
15. what's the serial? The first and fifth digits are the year and the 3 in between are the day in the year it was made.
16. I used to break a string about once a month (4 or 5 gigs a month at the time) but don't seem to have broken one since before christmas. I switched between my ray and my precision at our last but one gig for a bit of variation.
17. Does anybody know who the distributor is for Warwick in the UK? I need to try and get some spares - nuts and bolts for one of the folding rockstands - unless anybody knows where I can get the nuts and bolts from. I don't know what threads or lengths I'll need so I suppose it's not quite as simple as going down to B&Q Cheers
18. we supported the young knives up at the uni shortly after the shooting incident. I remember something in the press that described it as a "Rap event" as if to draw a line under the whole thing. The security was so tight and the door times all arsed up that we had to go on as people were trying to get through security. Still it's a good venue and they're putting some good bands on now. Thursday nights is gig night I think.
19. Ash - you've got Just Music in Loughborough which is a sort of hapless disorganised mess of (not terribly high end) instruments, effects and other bits and bobs, but the fellas that run it are quite helpful and they have a reasonable stock of sticks and strings and picks and things like that. I work in Loughborough so I go in if I'm desperate for something and can't wait to order it online. Other than that, Leicester "boasts" a sound control and a couple of independents - Sheehan's up by the train station is alright and Intasound on the Narborough road is a bit like Just Music really. PMT in Birmingham is good or there's a few more in Nottingham and Derby. The Shed in Leicester puts on metal and punk gigs, the Pendant Club in Loughborough is where my band has played most regularly but tends to put on more Indie and rock. I think the Three Nuns in Loughborough puts on the odd rock gig too. There's probably more but I've no idea where. There's a new rehearsal studio in Loughborough to but it doesn't look too great and I think there's facilities up at the uni. If you go to Leicester, the two I'd choose are RPM (best value for money - good kit, good people and good prices) and Quad (best kit by miles but pricey). I don't go out in Loughborough in the evenings so I can't offer any advice on that. Hope that helps.
20. All very nice - does the fatfinger make a difference? Steve - my guess is they add mass and so change the resonant frequency off the bit of wood and I suppose it adds sustain as a result
21. if anybody else is interested, put your hand up! Oh and then put it back down again and write on here that you are!
22. Cheers BB, yeah I think I've found that and it's £34 to boot. Might have to get me one of them
23. do you think if enough of us want to buy one, we can get enough of a discount out of ishibashi
24. Cheers OG I've seen fareast, but he never actually seems to have anything that isn't sold (although I haven't contacted him direct). As for import costs - that's all cool. I've seen the thread a few times and I've imported stuff meself and I think it's no more difficult that buying from within the UK
