1.
John > I bought these connectors at the "shop next block". I don't even know where they come from but they're not gold plated like the EBS ones. Anyway gold plating those things is just a way to make more money on us; it doesn't make any difference on the sound... I'll shoot and post a pic for ya. EDIT: Here we are !
that's exactly what I want!
2. evey time I go into just music i come out wishing i hadn't sorry Steve, it's not that bad, it's just really jumbled up and he doesn't often have anything much good. will check out the others though defo
3. a good selection of used equipment, both bass and guitar, in the east midlands my googling is not terribly successful thus far and any pointers would be appreciated.
4. there was one company on ebay - matchetts music i think - selling them fairly reasonably priced, or try creative tools
5.
Mmmm...1200 - the year of my birth too
BC? only kidding! Nice bass
6. I've recently got an EH nano small stone phaser. I only use it for guitar, but it seems to be well put together and solid and the sound out of it is quite rich and well defined. It also uses boss style power connectors, which i understand the regular EH stuff doesn't
7.
I play guitar in an "originals" band (I also record the bass parts as I'm teaching our bass player) and bass in a covers band. Whilst I get a thrill out of performing stuff I've written, I'm under no pretension that we are going to "make it" in any real sense, but the satisfaction you get if people sing along or come up afterwards and say "I really liked that song" is immense. In the covers band, I get to let my hair down and enjoy myself. We change tempos, rhythms and even structures in order to fit our own playing styles. As a bass player, you can really let your imagination flow (unless the song relies heavily on the exising bass riff). In many ways, I'm playing for my own pleasure, rather than the audience. Playing covers also forces you to learn more styles, techniques etc. that you can utilise in your own writing. Both types of band are equally valid, and the most important thing is to be out there playing with other musicians rather than be a bedroom bassist.
this is it for me - i'm the other way around, i play bass in originals and guitar in covers but i enjoy being able to dick around (for want of a better word) doing the covers. plus it's cash in my pocket which allows me to go out and fund my indulgent bass buying!
8. i'll mostly be sticking to bass idle.
9. you can have my ashdown abm300 and cab for a grand!!! I'll even deliver it!!! Cash?
10. lulu, what do you use to connect the super chorus to the octave? I've got something similar to the one between the octave and the delay, but the first one looks more compact and neater.
11. I'm sure we've probably gone into the how many/what sort of bands you play in discussion before, but an interesting topic of discussion has cropped up in our local music scene. There is a camp who are firmly in the "people who play in covers bands aren't musicians and have just sold their souls, not like us who play in originals bands whose integrity is maintained to the highest level as we carry on producing our high art and not this pony that's just churning out other people's songs" and I wondered what the opinions of more moderate people might be. Personally, I play bass in an originals band and guitar in a covers band, I also dep occassionally on bass in a trad irish band (not irish C&W). I enjoy what i do in both of them and feel that I have creative freedom in both bands and that neither band is an easier job than the other. The covers are easier to learn as a band as we can all work out our parts individually and then bring them together, so learning new stuff is a breeze and so much quicker than when we take a new idea and develop into a song, but that takes hours and weeks. I also think that, whilst the originals band lets me be creative, it's also to a degree quite restrictive and I can dick about more in the covers band, whilst still having to stick quite rigidly to a pre written part. What are your thoughts on this?
12. i went to PMT for my Ashdown, negotiated a discount with them based around the best price I found online and a 10 month 0%. I would have preferred to be able to buy a second hand rig with cash, but at the time my old rig had stopped working, I had gigs but no ready cash so it was the best option for me.
13.
Exactly! If you check his feedback (I flicked through the first 200) you'll see 99% of his sales are for tat worth approx £4.99. He has one sale for a 1963 Fender Strat @ £4790. Whether the Strat sold at the market value is immaterial, it does however validate the view that inflated prices for his scratchplates and general pie-in-the-sky priced items are just baited hooks to entice customers to buy from him the same tat that you can get from anywhere on eBay. Remember he can stick a listing up for 30p (or cheaper on ebay promotion days) and keep relisting it for free ad-infinitum, not bad advertising! You (I) may think he is a money grabbing plonker but you can not say that he isn't a bloody shrewd business man.
i thought you could only relist an item once for free if it didn't sell and it was only free if it actually sold the second time and you were credited with the original listing fee. Plus an item with a BIN now price of £2750 is more like £11 (possibly a bit less if he's registered as a business seller and ebay give him a bit of a discount). Actually, there is a half price promotion today, so listing fee may be more like £22. All which does nothing to alter the fact that he must be crazy to think that people are going to part with that sort of cash unseen for a part like that - and if they do, then they're as crazy as he is.
14. if you're only 17 you will go into insurance meltdown, regardless of what you buy, but if you got your folks to sub you for a new amp, you should be alright
15. escort van estates are good cos most of them don't have a lip on the edge of the boot so you can slide stuff like big cabs straight in and out.
16. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i know nothing of lakland basses, how do they compare quality wise with US Laklands and even US Fenders? I'm guessing these use all US hardware but are bolted together in Korea?
17. top man, thanks very much for that. John
18. VSQ65 - could possibly be a Viper - although i think it's a 65 watt 212
19. the catches you can replace. hey these things happen, i thought nobody would ever have any use for a cap i got from olympus cameras, but it sparked a bidding war and some silly sod paid nearly 13 quid for it
20. ah jeez, i'm not looking to get him £300, but if anybody wants something that's appropriate to the age of their bass, he's got something going if that makes sense
21. yeah i thought that as well - who the bloody hell would part with £326 for a fender case??? who would part with £326 for any case
22. don't suppose you've got the 4x8 at that sort of price have you!?
23. A mate of mine has a 70s Fender case, he doesn't know a lot about it, but I have found other through various lines of enquiry that it is likely to be from the late 70s as it has "Made in USA" under the Fender badge in the corner. Think it has a plastic as opposed to leather covered handle and has leather ends. The ends look like they've got a bit battered and the leather's split, but the case underneath is sound. Also only 1 of the 3 catches works and there are no keys, but the hinges alright. I did try and find out a bit more with a view to replacing some of the catches, liberating and using it myself, but I think he would like to sell it now as he's just bought a westone thunder IIIA fretless. Anyway, pics to follow - not sure what to ask for this, so sensible offers. Have seen another one in better nick for a strat end on ebay for over £300 and guessing it's not worth that in the condition that it is in, but with a couple of new latches, it should at least be secure. send me pms for more info, pete doesn't use BC, but I'm trying to get him and his westone collection on here.
