1. There are two Waltons shops - one on Great St Georges Street and one on Upper Dorset Street - lots and lots of Gibson guitars but not much else worth looking at IMO. If you go up the Naas Road or get the Luas to the Red Cow stop there is a HUGE music shop there - Xmusic (website is xmusic.ie) - that had a lot of stuff from a lot of brands the last time I went in, including some bass stuff. There's a guy with a shop on Exchequer Street that has a lot of secondhand stuff and might be worth a look in there - the shop's called Guitar Fix and sometimes has an A-frame blackboard outside so you know which door to go through as it's above another shop - can't remember which one although I think it's a shoe shop for some reason. There are another couple of shops on Exchequer Street/Wicklow Street but I tend to give them a miss most of the time. I agree with BurritoBass on the exchange rate - if you just want to go and have a look at a few guitars on your way for a few pints, but I personally wouldn't buy anything over there.
2. OK mate no worries - sorry for the delay, they went in the post last Wednesday (16th Dec) so I would have hoped they would get to you soon.
3. What are the obvious choices Finbar?
4. Can anybody suggest any string brands that offer endorsements? I am not looking for freebie strings, but with the amount of work the band is doing this year I would be happy to kit the band out with strings from one manufacturer if it meant we got a good deal on them. I am playing more guitar than ever and take two guitars to gigs, each with a fresh set of strings for every gig. I don't know how often bass Pete changes his strings, but at 30 gigs per year we could probably get through 70+ sets per year, so I doubt there would be any issues with minimum order quantities. Ta
5. Just cleaned the sensor on my SLR so was just mucking about to make sure I'd got all the dirt off.
6. In Cheltenham there is Aroundabout Sound. Don't know of any others.
7. Probably right BB. Not the end of the world anyway, just thought I'd ask what others thought.
Does it have a rub when you move the cone? I had a 12" one fail and take the amp with it (and another amp I tested it with) because the wires from the terminals to the coil were touching.
It does indeed Mr Foxen, fortunately the amp survived.
8.
Guy, Martin,Chris and Mark at Ashdown all have a great reputation for customer service (ok, I am biased as I know them) and would do anything to help customers with genuine problems/gripes etc. This one is taking the piss a little though mate, TBH.
Whilst I agree fundamentally with what you're saying, I think your bias shows through the last line of your response, but you are after all entitled to your opinion. I'll take your thoughts on board and I'll chuck it in the skip. I think the coil's gone and it'll cost more to recone it than it cost to replace it with something half decent. I have no problems with the amp or the sound of the cab and yes I agree - it's out of warranty and it does look like it's a pisstake to ask. If it had been used week in week out and died as a result and being heavily used, then fair enough. I think I'd probably done a dozen gigs with it and the same number of practices over a 3 year period so I was quite surprised to see it fail. Oh well, what can you do?
9. I have an 8 ohm ABM Mini 15 cab, which is marked on the back "300W" Earlier this year the speaker stopped working while connected to my ABM300 head which probably runs 180w - 200w when it's got a single 8 ohm cab connected. I was a bit surprised because the head and cab have only had maybe 100 hours use since I bought it new from PMT in Birmingham in late 06 I think. I got in touch with Guy at Ashdown about it to say, "Hello, what can you do to help me with this?" and got a response essentially saying "nothing - it's out of warranty now". Ok, I thought, bit pissed off but what can you do? Anyway, last week I got sent a spec sheet from Sica in Italy which showed that the power of the speaker was actually more likely 250W, not 300W - that to me says the speaker's not really up to the job and shouldn't really have been in there in the first place. I emailed Guy at Ashdown again and mentioned this - poilitely - and haven't had a response. I assume I won't be getting one either. Now - what should I do? Just forget it and get on with my life (I've replaced the speaker now with a Hartke driver)? Contact Ashdown again and try and get a result? Write to trading standards - I am kind of thinking about this because the way I see it, the cab was never fit for purpose in the first place what with it being only fitted a 250W speaker instead of a 300W. The sale of goods act also says a product should last a reasonable time, which seems to be defined as 6 years. What do you think?
10. So anyway, what does all this contribute to the OP's review?
11. I don't see how any of this adds to this specific review, but maybe that's just me
12. Last night not too bad. Was a wedding so left the house at 12 to go and load up and then be at the venue for 2pm. Set the gear up then had to break it down again for the DJ (who had the biggest rig for a small hall you've ever seen) then put it all back up again. Eventually got home at 5pm. Went back out to the venue for 8 o'clock for a 9pm start, went on late but lots of dancing, followed by what appeared to be the local air guitar championships when we played Johnny B Goode. Guests started leaving about quarter to eleven after our second set - noticed the dancefloor for the second set was a bit sparse and realised the venue staff had brought cheese and biscuits out so everybody was sitting down eating again! Played Slade's Merry Christmas as a closer, too a direct hit in the mouth from a mic after my stand was whacked by some clumsy fool and got home at half 1. Bride said after her dress it was the best money she'd spent
13. I've just come back from a photo shoot for the band. We're a covers band and we want need something like - this is me, I play the bass and I know how to shave and comb me hair and your mam's going to like me (not in that way). Works for us, might not work for a metal band
14.
I used to have two black Precisions, one US with maple neck, one Mex with rosewood fingerboard. Still got the Mex, the US went in favour of my Shuker JJ.
I used to have two black Precisions too - one (US) black/black/maple and one (JV) black/brown tort/rosewood. Love 'em!
15. Hello Any relation to Rick Danko?
16. That could quite possibly be the bass I played. I remember linking to his ebay auction on this site!
17.
Hi spoonman I bought it from a guy in the U.K. that had bought it new from Landing ! I was looking for one of these or a Birdsong for ages! Will.
Will did you get it off a bloke in the Midlands (specifically Leicestershire)? My mate Matt had one of these that he'd got direct from Landing. It was a lovely bass to play.
18. Cheers James - yeah it's definitely the coil that's gone as the crunchy sound is present when the cone is being pushed in manually. I always used this cab with my ABM300 head - I reckon it was pushing between 150 - 200W at 8 ohms and it was always clean and clear (except when I used a bit of fuzz or the dirty setting on the amp) when a clean tone was used, no distortion at all.
19. Why's that James? I am a bit ignorant when it comes to these things! What happens if you underpower a speaker? It always sounded alright to me. Surely a company wouldn't make a product which isn't suitable to be used with one of it's other products without saying so?!
20. Right - scratch all that - I should have paid more attention to this first!! The plate on the back of the cab has the word "Power" printed, with 300W in the gap where the power rating goes. No mention is made of RMS, Music or Rated power - so I guess I have to work that out on my own!
21. Thanks for the info, I have email Sita and asked them what the differences are - it's probably worth sending them another and asking if they think the speaker should have been marked as 300W RMS.
