1. i've sent guitars and basses by a mixture of citylink and parcelforce and received stuff by both carriers and lynx as well i think and never had an issue (not that it's any comfort following the loss of this particular instrument) with guitars sent in boxes and packed in hardcases and then boxed. I've received one bass in a hardcase, taped up with an address label and one numpty sent me a guitar in a gig bag with a label half taped to it. miraculously it survived save for a broken machine head
2. i'd be tempted to take that down to the post office and stick it through the glass
3. yeah i've seen those mart - aren't they the SG melody makers? There were loads around for sale about this time last year
4. does he mean pelham blue not pellum blue? Looks nice
5. it would have been alright, had he not tuned his backup guitar to the same pitch
6. standard. although our guitar player knealt on his tuner once and accidentally recalibrated concert pitch from 440 to 450ish Hz and then tuned to it. The rest of us had tuned to concert and I spent the following 30 minutes wondering what was wrong as he was adamant he'd tuned his guitar. Which of course he had I suppose.
7.
Seeing as I actually put a bit of time & effort into this, it seems a shame to let it get wiped when Basstalk goes.
damn right. only yesterday i pointed somebody else towards the thread who was looking for Bass collection info
8.
I never had a lesson in my life so I think it's possible that it may be my technique that is the route of the problem. My wrist is usually pretty loose when I play, I don't know if that's a bad thing or not. John, Im gonna get that power pick, if it does what it say's it could be very handy, I could play with less intensity whilst still getting the power on the strings. I'll let you know how I get on!
Dave, if you don't want to get one from the US, hotrox in nottingham sell them. www.hotroxuk.com
9.
Status, Shuker, Trantec wireless, Euphonic Audio iAmp350 head, Nemesis 2x10 and 1x15 cabs, Trace Elliot compressor, Boss volume pedal, Korg tuner. Fairly soon the EA head will be going into a 4U case along with a newer Trantec receiver and an old Yamaha FX500 ½-rack FX unit.
This looks like my cup of tea! Mine currently (below). ABM EVO II 300 and ABM Mini 15. Perfectly adequate and more importantly, easy to store and transport. Wouldn't mind adding a light 210 or a mini 48. I leave the telly at home generally and the cheap bit of telly bench has been skipped and replaced with a nice chest of drawers. They'd be good for raising the cab to head height but the mrs won't let me leave the house with them
10. would be interested to see how these work and if they would make a difference potentially, you could spread the pressure of your grip through your hand to minimise the strain in the one area where you grip a pick http://www.groovetubes.com/product.cfm?Product_ID=2095
11.
Hi. This is my first post but Ive been around since the days of bassworld. I play with a plectrum and at recent gigs I've been getting quite serious pain in my picking hand. The problem is in between the thumb and index finger from holding the plectrum where I get this throbbing pain literally after only about 2 or 3 songs into the set. Obviously I play through the pain but sometimes towards the end it can get pretty unbearable and has an effect on my playing. It's frustrating as I like to play fast and sometimes it becomes impossible during some of the more intense basslines to play them well. Or if I push myself too much I end up finishing the gig with a pretty intense, burning pain in the affected area. Any ideas to help solve this?
Hello Dave (i can't help laughing at that) I get that now and again and sometimes I can't grip a pick. I put it down almost exclusively to dehydration and have tried to not drink any alchohol before going on stage and instead to drink plenty of water. it comes and goes and it's more prevalent when playing some of the faster stuff. I tried using thicker or moulded picks with a different surface and sometimes using a smaller pick helps. What sort of picks are you using?
12. rather than have one massive great big thread that hasn't been started yet, can there be a section in the marketplace for those wanting to trade stuff to create their own threads? JA
13.
When you say "less winds= more tension", am I right in thinking that winds refers to the number of turns around the machine head? If so, then, yes that is partially true. When you strike a string, it stretches along its entire length, albeit at different rates at different locations on the instrument. The string stretches between the points at which it is anchored, namely;
yeah i was referring to the number of winds around the post. That makes a lot of sense, however i have heard once or twice that flats and even pressurewound strings have more tension and have more tension in them than roundwound strings. I'm really interested from the point of view that if I was to change my 45-105 rounds to a set of 45-105 flats for example, is there any more tension which is likely to pull on the neck more and as a result require adjustment to straighten the neck a touch? or if i use a hex core normally and switch to a set with a round core?

15. very good - musically all very competent. like you say mixes aren't great (drums could probably do with a proper mix) but good enough for demo purposes. Don't be afraid of layering up guitar tracks to make it sound big and only criticism is that last act of rebellion is probably a bit long at just over 6 minutes. In the arrangements of most of our stuff (link in my sig), we've had to be quite ruthless cutting stuff down purely from the point of view that if we ever wanted to get any kind of A&R opinion, my view is most of the decision making is done within the 30 seconds or so. I've cut songs in half before because they'd weighed in at nearly 7 minutes. One of our latest ones has come in at under 3 mins. All good though.
16. something i've never really paid much attention to, but how much variation is there between strings and string tension? Not just in variance of the wind (ie flat vs round), but across brands so how much difference in tension is there between two sets of nickel wounds of the same guage, made by different companies - or even nickel vs stainless? What other affect does the tension have other than stress on the neck and how flexible the string feels to play? Just wondering really, especially if i want to be switching string brands to find one i really like without having to adjust my bass every time i change the strings? I understand that less winds = more tension, is this true as well?
17.
PS. Only ever gigged the Charlotte in Leicester and despite the very difficult sound engineer I had a reasonable amount of fun in front of a reasonable amount of people (we did have management and were touring though!!)
was his name Phil? It seems his reputation precedes him! 27briagde get on alright with him, i think it's just a matter of becoming accustomed to it.
18.
Now you see, I pressed it under your post and quoted you ^^ in my reply. You should also be able to do multi quotes by pressing the quote button under various posts in a thread and then 'add reply' (and then you can edit away and delete the non-relevant bits, and check it in 'post preview' to make sure it looks how you would like it to before you press 'post reply'). Or something like that
oh yeah now i've actually read what it is i'm supposed to do, it actually works!!
19. mine doesn't work! If I press fast reply and then press one of the quote buttons, it just goes red and goes from "+ QUOTE" to "- QUOTE" I had hoped it might do the thing that youse have done, but maybe I just don't know how to work it.
20.
I have no affiliation whatsoever but I've been using http://www.senditnow.com/ They charge £11 with £150 insurance or £22 with £500 insurance and they ship anything up to 30kg, door to door in the UK. It 'IS' actually ParcelForce! Not similar to or like ParcelForce but the one and the same. Oddly they won't insure the case your bass is couriered in but they do insure what is in the case! Ironically if you send a case without a bass inside it will be covered. Worth looking into.
aren't they them who used to be parcelnow? i've used them a couple of times and yes they do appear to be a parcelforce reseller, but parcelforce do come and pickup the item, take it to a parcelforce depot and deliver to the recipient. All the tracking is done through the parcelforce website and on one occassion when I had booked a collection through parcelnow to send a guitar back to the biggest thick i have ever encountered, the address which i'd sent the parcel to was incorrectly supplied and i was miraculously able to track it and get it redirected all through parcelforce without having to deal with the reseller.
21. i've got so much vitriol about shopping in places like that! PMT on the other hand are thoroughly bloody nice blokes who are more than happy to negotiate a discount (obviously some of their stuff is still wildly more expensive than seems really necessary, but I blame the distributor/manufacturer for the price setting)
22. didn't charvel put a lipstick pickup on the surfcaster style stuff?

you know the quote button, the one next to the reply button under each post in a thread? Well, what does it do, other than turn red when you click it? (seriously, my computer knowledge is almost as basic as my bass knowledge)
24.
Hey guys we really appreciate your enthusiasm and support but from what we can see, the membership is a little divided over this and we see no value in forcing the issue onto people if its not wholly welcome - particularly after the recent turmoil. We're also concerned that subscriptions might encourage a divisive us-and-them type culture which we've seen on Talkbass a bit. Now I understand Talkbass costs "several thousands of dollars" to run per year, and they've regularly got a thousand members online at once. I imagine its hard for Paul to otherwise cover those costs out of a gigging musicians wages so I'm not criticising him for the subscription thing at all. However, if some of you are enjoying and appreciating the forums so much, thats really cool! Why not make an annual voluntary donation and think of it as a subscription? If you'd like that formally recognised, I'm sure we can put together a list of supporters accessed from a link on the home page. This way you get to show your appreciation and we don't feel like others have their enjoyment of the forums reduced in any way. How does that sound? Maybe at some point when we've got the logo sorted out, we can get some T-shirts and caps organised as well!
a hat and a t shirt? I might as well hang a sign around my neck that says, "i am a complete bass geek". that's what my mrs thinks anyway!!!!
25. there's another place i've been to for thai up the lincoln road but i forget what it's called now! east (on the boat) is alright as well talking of the boat thing, have you played any gigs? There was a band about to kick off the last time i was in there, but it seems quite late to be going on.
