1.
There you go. I bought a new MM P neck from a UK guy on the bay and IIRC it was £95 all in.
Bluebass? I've used him before, and I contacted him first, but he didn't have any at the time?
2.
I've still got mine. As you can see it's hardly in original condition either. The finish had already been stripped when I get it, and the scratch plate had been drilled for two extra controls plus another jack socket, none of which were wired to the rest of the guitar electronics. All the replacements/modifications I've done since have been to keep it in a playable state. I love the sound of both Tri-Sonic pickups on together. Did your's have a fully adjustable bridge or a simple wooden one?
Mine was just the standard Sonic model I believe, and I'm sure it had a metal adjustable bridge. But it did sound good at the time, although I suppose it would do, as it was my first ever bass! Here's a picture of me playing it in 1967, the guy at the back was an american over on holiday, who we got to know and I think he is playing an EKO 12 string, if my memory serves me correctly, and I remember that it sounded great. And just look at my flower power kipper tie!!! We were all around 15/16 at the time, and sadly we all went our separate ways, and I never played again until about six years ago at the age of 54. Maybe we should start a thread featuring pictures of our first ever bands?
3.
Not a lot of choice for 1960, and as all the music I play these days requires 5-string basses, nothing I would use. The fist bass I bought - a Burns Sonic - was in production in 1960, but the features on mine, rosewood fingerboard and fully adjustable bridge put it later in the production life - more like 1962. The problem with most of the more interesting instruments from this time period is that production details are almost non-existent and a lot of them are nearly impossible to date with any accuracy. If I could find something with proof that it was made in 1960 I'd consider a Burns Artist Bass, a 2-pickup Mosrite (if that version was in production in 1960) or anything by Wandré.
My first bass was a Burns Sonic too, but with maple board, I paid £15 for it in 1967, and it was already well and truly used, and the paint on the back was almost completely worn away through buckle rash. At a guess, I would say that it had been around for some time, possibly as early as 1960. I swapped it a couple of years later for some fishing tackle, but really wish I still had it now for sentimental reasons.
4.
Trouble is when it arrives in the UK there will be additional duty to pay, plus a £13 fee to parcelfarce for paying the VAT on your behalf. So the deal can often not be quite so sweet.
Yeah! I just bought a Mighty Mite neck from the states, it cost me £68.13 + £30.88 pp, and then got a bill for duty of £32. So all in, it cost me £130, which is a lot, when you consider I only paid around £70 + £5 pp, when I managed to find one over here not so long ago. I have managed to get a jazz body in once 'duty free', but it seems that they hardly let anything in free now, even low-cost items like strings.
5. Forget the Beatles and the Stones, it's the 3rd anniversary of JEDWARD!!!
6. I would love to own a bass of my birth date. So does anyone know where I can pick up a nice 1951 Precision Bass on the cheap? I can go up to £250!
7. My missus reckons a bass is the sexiest sounding instrument of all, closely followed by a sax. And I'm not kidding!
8.
Thanks for that Briggy. All sorted now.
Glad to be able to help.
9.
Trying not to sound obvious, but are you on Ebay.com or Ebay.co.uk in the address bar? If you are on the UK site it will always give UK listings first followed up by international (or US) listings. You can further filter on the left as previously said.
Definitely ebay.co.uk. It's far worse if you search 'precision' or 'jazz', because you get hundreds of ads from the US, and in particular 'The Stratosphere' site, who seem to specialise in dismantling brand new basses, and flogging the necks and bodies separately, some bodies are even fully-loaded, and these aren't just Squiers and MIM's, they also include American Standards, Specials, Vintage USA RI's, USA Deluxe, Roadworns, etc. and looking through their guitar section, they even dismantle 'custom shop' strat's and tele's. Here's the link for those who have never seen it before. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/The-STRATosphere/_i.html?rt=nc&_nkw=bass&_sid=105525814&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1513&_pgn=1
10. Thanks Bert, it's been bugging me for ages,
11. I constantly go through the 'basses for sale' section on ebay, but just lately it seems that it's being bombarded to by ads from the states. Does anyone know of a way to filter these ads out?
12. Go into 'My Settings' Click on 'Manage My Attachments' Check the boxes alongside the pics Click 'Delete Selected' Done!
13. Delete all the photo's you have uploaded that are no longer required. Also, before uploading, open the photo in Paint Shop Pro, or similar photo editing software, and reduce the photo down to 10%, that way it reduces the size of the file, but will expand when clicked on.
14.
Quite a lot of the community knock these, and yes I can understand why. I'm fortunate to be the present keeper of lots of different basses, among them I do have a '68 P Bass, a '92 Jazz V, a '95 Jazz American Standard and I also have a 2011 Roadworn Jazz. The Roadworn, in my opinion, plays (and sounds) better than the '95 USA standard hands down, the neck, the action, it's amazingly lightweight - it's all good!
I think that the knocking is all really "tongue-in-cheek", so I wouldn't take too much notice of it. I must admit that I would love a "roadworn" bass, but personally, I would like it to be genuinely that way. I don't doubt that the "roadworns" are great basses, as so many BC'ers are always singing their praises, so why can't the Mexican factory produce the same instrument without the artificial ageing, as I think that they would appeal to far more people, because I think a lot of people are put off by a brand new instrument looking aged, and if they cut out the aged look, maybe they would be cheaper?
15.
In the meantime you can offset some of the cost of it by flogging your Thumpinator to someone with a lesser amp, your Streamliner has such a circuit built in.
I might just do that!
16. Just got the email from Alex. asking for the balance on the Super Twelve. The wait is going to be even worse now that I know I shall be receiving it soon.
17. Why not buy a decent second-hand American Standard for around £600, and rough it up a bit?
18.
Something wrong with your calendar thebrig!?
Thanks for pointing that out mate, I should have said 22nd August.
19. Ordered a Super Twelve on 22nd August, so it's now week six. I had to sell my Genz Benz rig to fund a new head and the Super Twelve, I've bought the new head, but I'm now cab less, and I'm just about to join a new band that is gigging at least once or twice a week, so I'm hoping mine will show up soon.
20. Sign up to Lemonrock, and they will send you a gig list every week, for what ever area you choose, and you will see loads of jam nights/open mics listed. There are loads in and around St Albans, but check out The Horn in St Albans, and The Horns in Watford, both attract quality musicians. You could also try: The Sportsman, Croxley Green - last Sunday of each month Waggers social club in Ware - 1st Wednesday of each month Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, St Albans - every Friday The Three Wishes, Edgware - every Monday
21. Thanks for the review so far Legoman, looking forward to your thoughts after you've gigged them together. My first proper rig was a Ashdown ABM 575 head, ABM 1x15 & ABM 2x10, which I really liked, although I know many on here, don't really dig the Ashdown sound, which is fair enough, as it definitely has a sound of it's own, and I suppose it's a bit like 'Marmite' really. I had to get shot of it because back and shoulder problems, and I'm now very much on the lightweight route. My Shuttle 6 was a little too clean and polite for me, and so far, having tried the Streamliner through a couple of hired cabs, I think it is closer to the sound I want, I just hope that the Super Twelve will be the perfect match for it.
22.
Just got the call from Nevada that I should be getting my Genz Benz Streamliner 900 tomorrow....will let you all know how this hooks up with my BF Super Duper Twelve T ASAP!
Please do! I've had my Streamliner 900 for five weeks now, but it's only week five of the wait for my BF Super Twelve. Come on Alex, hurry up please.
23. I took up bass because I thought that it would be easier than playing guitar, and it wasn't until I decided to practise my guitar playing more, that I realised that actually, playing bass is more difficult than playing guitar, well it was for me anyway, as I quickly became quite a competent guitarist, but I would never give up playing bass, I absolutely love it, and my wife thinks the bass is really SEXY!!! I remember the lead guitarist in my old band, who is very talented by the way, played bass at rehearsal on a night I had to cry off due to illness. The following week, he and the rest of the band, all said that they now appreciate just what I do, the guitarist said that he would never be able to play bass in a million years, because you have to feel the music, take notice of what the drummer is doing, and the other guitarist didn't bother listening to anything at all.
24.
Fender Jap P body with Fender Jap Jazz fretless neck. Perfect. No gap in the pocket. With 3mm nut difference, that's 1.5mm each side. There's about 550mm of neck between pocket exit point and nut (topside). Not the greatest at trigonometry, but the increase in taper angle between a P and a Jazz neck must only be measurable in microns at the pocket exit point.
That's what I was hoping, as I am thinking of swapping the neck on my precision to a jazz.
25. If you want to build a precision body to go with the precision neck, this guy has some quality templates for sale.
