Being a Geddy Lee & Chris Squire fan, very pleased how the punchy trebly bass sound turned out - particlularly on the drop D intro to Slither. http://www.audio-asylum.net/audio.html Best played loud with the bass control turned up..........
@ Muttley and Wilco Guess What Guys! I do get sound but im not sure if both pickups work! Two switches broken :0( No. 4061574 Made In Japan
Just seen this! My bass was in worse condition than that when i first got it - well worth putting the effort in to get it back to its former glory. I'm now gigging with mine & couldn't be happier with it!!

FS: Maverick S5 (active 5er (only 2 ever manufactured with this finish)
Wilco replied to Scotticus's topic in Basses For Sale
I bought this from new & Scott brought this from me last year. Great bass - possibly one of the most comfortable basses i've played, great tones & as Scott says a very hot on board pre-amp. I bought this from a shop that had two S5's custom finished in this colour - something to do with the opening of new premises apparently (wasn't local to me). Anyways, more than acceptable selling price for a great instrument & Scott's a top bloke so buy with confidence! -

Not current range as noted above, however noticed PMT are shifting these at a clearance price of £469 each! http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/index.php/deals/clearance.html?p=2 (near the bottom) I'm looking for a quick sale, so i'll dangle tempatation in your way & price drop to £550!! -
Pro level effects pedal for sale. Overview of the range construction here (which also has a link to this pedal):- http://guyatone.com/...icroEffects.php Here's a review I stumbled across on the internet:- http://www.musicgear...0Micro%20Chorus ..and here's a page confirming the new UK price:- http://www.hotroxuk....cro-chorus.html I've no idea if this is common to the range or just this pedal, but there is a slight audible clicking only when the pedal is in bypass mode, plugged into the main amp input & through a passive instrument. Through an effects loop or used in conjuction with an active instrument, this does not occur at all & it disappears once the pedal is engaged anyway. I've had this for nearly a year now & I use a loop this has never been an issue for me. When on though, the chorus sounds produced are top drawer. Cosmetically the pedal for sale is not far off new condition, with the only ding being a small scratch on one corner. Pictures:- http://s952.photobuc...ulwilcock/MCm5/ Comes in original box & with instructions. To be clear though, best used with an active bass or within an effects loop. Less than half new price for a quick sale. Will trade for an EHX Neo Clone as that is what I want to replace this with to make my pedalboard easier to set up!! £65 posted

Two cabs – a 2x10 & a 1x15. Not a current model (by name anyway...) in the Ashdown range but some info:- http://shop.absolute...-cab-1011-p.asp http://shop.absolute...-cab-1010-p.asp Including the covers, new prices would have been over a grand Condition of my cabs:- the 2x10 has had more use so would say a 7/10 because it has some scuffs, & the 1x15 is in great condition so would say a 9/10 Photo's of mine here:- http://s952.photobuc...Classic%20cabs/ As you'd expect at this spec, these sound awesome! Collection from Swindon or a meet up at a sensible distance. £600 ono. Cheers, Wilco

Yes that would work if all the effects were plugged into the main amp input. Only my distortion is plugged in that way whilst all my other pedals go through the effects loop. I read that is the tried & tested preferable set up, & my effects do actually sound better that way TBH. Also, that is sending an unbalanced signal to the PA not a cleaner balanced one.
-
Indeed you can & I have. (additional mic stand being something else you can trip over on a tight stage!) I think the point is that these days a pre/post switch for the DI is a pretty standard amp feature, & it wouldn't have taken much to add that to the LH500 (instead of the brite switch?) so that you've got all options available. Perhaps there'll be a MK2!!
-
Yep, that's exactly what they did. After I got my amp, I emailed them & got confirmation straight from the horses mouth. Only weak spot of a great amp.
I've just bought a compressor to go with my LH500. The manual says the DI is pre EQ but no mention about the effects send. I'd be interested to know how/who could go about modding the amp to remedy this. Cheers Wilco!
I've found a really simple way around this now - buy one of these (which I've just done):- http://www.samsontech.com/samson/products/processors/s-class-mini/sdirect/ + another speaker cable & job done. Basically you can set the S-Direct to take an input directly from one of the LH500's outputs. There is a 1/4" jack link/output socket & the balanced XLR out on the S-Direct. Connect one amp channel to the S-Direct input & the link ouput to your speaker cab. The S-Direct has then got your post effects & eq signal, which can then be sent to the PA via it's XLR out. The S-Direct only costs around £30 & funnily enough, I think it's made by the same people who own Hartke! Hope that helps.

Here's my two:- Lovely Geddy Lee Jazz with the recently fitted Hipshot HB2's. Mexican Jazz V in a glorious blue which my pics don't really do justice to. Nicely grained Pau Ferro fingerboard too which is no longer available on this model. Both great basses which I am very pleased to own.

1980's 5 string - were they common/about at this time?
Wilco replied to Wilco's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks for all the posts guys - all useful stuff. The early 80's Aria RSB Deluxe 5 sounds very interesting. A Matsumoku 5 stringer - yes please!! Bet they're as rare as rocking horse s**t though. Will have to start saving my pennies just in case! (Yamaha BB5000 looks cool too) -
If I were to buy another 4 string now, it would be either a Westone Thunder 1A or a Peavey T-40. I would also like to buy another 5 string at some stage. Can anyone suggest a comparable 80's 5 stringer to the Westone or Peavey? I took up bass in the 80's but honestly can't remember if 5 stringers like we see these days were about back then. Getting older & memory loss is a wonderful thing...............
I've had a 2009 Ged, and now have a 2011, and the standard ones seem fine to me.
As I mentioned in my post, more recent models have been better (following a price increase...). Certainly with my old tuners, they would stay in tune reasonably well, but you could turn them 360 degrees plus sometimes & it would make no difference to the pitch. The Hipshots tune more easily & stay in tune better. They are way heavier & much more solid than the originals too.

Thought I would add a couple of pics of my SB. A 1983 model I acquired last December & it was in an un-loved state. Not through abuse, but it had seen virtually no use at all by the previous owner for about 10 years. The bass also had a broken pickup coil on the bridge pup. After much cleaning & polishing (particularly on the frets) it went for a set up at my local music shop. They sent the broken pick up to Kent Armstrong to be fixed. Once I got it back, I added a little bit more foam under the bridge pup to get it closer to the strings & then put on a new set of DR handmades. After all of that I've now got one of the best basses I've ever heard & played for an outlay of around £250!! More than a little pleased & this is now a gigging bass. Like Muttleys post above, I have found little info on this pickup arrangement. I've been told that is model was probably a limited run of specials - sounds plausible given it's model name of 'SB Special 2'. Anyway - it rocks!

I've not tried one, but I believe the tuners on this bass model are now much improved on what they were. Not sure when this improvement happened, but my GL Jazz is a 2006 model & the tuners were definitely a weak point back then. I've seen other posts on the internet saying the same thing. I upgraded mine to Hipshot HB2 tuners, which was very simple to do as the screw holes line up perfectly to the originals! Pic attached:- Hipshots sourced from Bass Direct. Thought I'd post in case another GL Jazz owner found useful!
can you explain a bit more re this valve swapping ? I am a valve neophyte and know nothing of this. I am probably going to get the L5000 this week. ps: where is a good place to buy these valves at a good price ?
Yep, no problem. The process is simple enough - take the chassis lid off, the valve is towards the front of the amp, it will need a good (careful) tug to remove it, push new valve in, lid back on, job done! I did a bit of internet research on valves before I bought the amp & thought this site was very informative amongst others:- http://thetubestore.com/12ax7review.html After fitting the new valve, the amp was warmer & the dynamics of a played note seemed broader - basically it did sound better & slightly less hiss as the volume knob increased. My amp came with this valve:- http://www.hotroxuk.com/sovtek-12ax7wa-ecc...ve-15435-0.html & I replaced it with the 12Ax7 (ECC83/B759) version of this valve:- http://www.hotroxuk.com/12at7-ecc81-b739-g...on-14493-0.html I bought it from Hot Rox, but can't see one on their website at the moment. If you decide on replacing the valve, you'll have to do a Google search & shop around for the one you want. Hope that helped. Wilco

I've had my LH500 for about a year now & I'm very happy with it (although I changed the cheap pre-amp 12Ax7 valve straight away after delivery, for a high quality Gold Lion one - £35) It's very loud & I love the simplicity of the controls (why does it ever have to be more complicated than this!?!). So far it has been very reliable. Was initially concerned at the amount of hiss when the volume control was on 5 & over, but in reality I've never had the volume over 4. Using both my Ashdown cabs though presents a 4ohm load. If your cab is 8 ohms & you have to push the volume higher, this hiss could be an annoyance. The effects loop works well & the fan is quiet. One gripe I do have is that the DI is pre EQ & effects loop (however, at the suggestion of another bass chatter I will look into getting this modded to 'post' which will be more useful in a live situation with a PA) To sum up, for the money, you can't really go wrong with an LH500!!
