1.
I strongly suspect that could be modded fairly easily and cheaply by someone with half a clue what they're doing to at least set it post-EQ, if not build in a pre/post switch. I reckon I'd be able to do it, that's how simple it should be
Y'know for some reason I hadn't thought about that. I have changed the valve but other than that, my technical skills are limited to plugging it in & switching it on, so I have less than half a clue! I will endeavour to find someone locally who can do that - thanks for the suggestion!
2. I've had my rig (as per my sig) about a year now, & to be honest have not had any GAS at all to change anything since I started using it. The Ashdown cabs are brilliant - having a 15 inch speaker in one cab & two 10 inchers in the other + both cabs having switchable tweeters, means I've got broad range of frequencies on tap & they have great tone. They are light having neodymium speakers, but at the same time they have what seems like a bombproof build quality. I think am unlikely to ever change these for what I do. I swapped out the cheap Sovtek valve in the Hartke head as soon as I got it, & put in a Gold Lion Custom Tube & the thing simply rocks - very, very loudly!!! I play in a 5 piece loud rock covers band & I don't think I've ever had the volume on more than 4.... I've really grown to love the simplicity of the amp controls - 3 dials + 1 button = any sound you want really. Again it feels bombproof in build & has great tone. The only part of the spec where it falls down is the DI out. This is pre eq & effects loop only which I just don't understand - wouldn't have taken much to put a pre-post switch on the amp. IMO if you run separate head & cabs rig, don't ignore the quality of your cabling - I use Klotz LY215T cables with Neutrik plugs - superb clarity. Re the DI 'issue', OK I might not be truly happy, but 99% happy & GAS free ain't a bad place to be in!!!
3. I've just bought an Ashdown compressor pedal from Tony. Pedal was as described & arrived promptly within a couple of days of me paying for it. Easy communication too - all round simple transaction. Nice one Tony & thanks. Wilco
4. Dave bought my EHX Bassballs pedal. Really quick & simple transaction - fast payment & easy communication. Who needs Evilbay when there's top fellas like Dave on Basschat!!
5.
Not that I don't like these setlists. By God, I like 'em. Perfect evening out for me. But I'm 53 yrs old. For pity's sake, isn't anyone thinking about the children?
5 piece rock covers band with female singer. 6. Probably needs no introduction on here, but just in case:- http://www.ehx.com/products/bassballs Pic of the actual item in question:- In great condition - just missing one of its four base plate screws, but still firmly held together. Works absolutely fine Cheers, Wilco
7. Used to use Kerly Kues but a recent convert to DR Sunbeams. (Regardless, only nickelwound roundwounds for me)
8. Alleva Coppolo basses make me drool more than any other. Unfortunately i'll need a lottery win before I could afford one This is a lovely bass that deserves a bump! Best of luck with the sale.
9. Scott bought my Maverick S5 bass & I met up with him to complete the transaction. A pleasant & nice a guy as you could wish to meet - a very straightforward transaction. I would happily deal with him again & no-one should have any concerns about buying from or selling to him.
10.
hmmm! i did find the neck/frets a little sharp though I assumed it's cos i play it fairly low. I'm used to it now though. Im curious about your dissatisfaction with the tuners? you mean they're not tight? I do have a mild issue with it going out of tune, not horrifically so, but it tends to tune... UP! most basses I would imagine tune down as the tuners loosen but this one seems to be the other way I can only out it down to the neck moving because I dont tickle it and the fact that the strings on it are such high guage... It's never caused me major annoyance, but I would like to get em set so that they stay in, no matter how hard I play it. the intonation's fine (in tune at least?!) so I assume the neck is okay too. if there are corrections I could make to it, that Im not picking up on, I'd like to hear em. I guess im a bit of a workmanlike player and the jazz suits me due to the fast neck and the tone. I feel like Im cheating on it just suggesting it might need a tweaking! here's an 'action' shot, in a moment of calm. notice that thumb firmly rooted
The poor tuners is a relatively well known issue with this model. Guess the fact you are having some tuning issues backs that up a bit. With most people it's just the fact that they don't have a smooth consistant turn on them. A reply above indicates they may have upgraded the tuners in the last couple of years - certainly the price has shot up since I bought mine (2006)!! I don't think the CTS pots are a recent upgrade though as mine has those in. Mine also has a budget capacitor in (an ic 503Z). These are +/-80% tolerence - fortunately on my Ged Jazz it works ok. There was one of these on my MIM Jazz but it was next to useless, so that's been replaced today (and there are CTS pots in that bass too).
11.
Im sorry but was it me or as per usual, was every band bass player on the show tonight slinging a precision or a jazz WTF? Dont get me wrong, i love em but FFS whats that saying about every young bass player in a commercially successful band, sheep or what? Or does the "evil" empire of Leo have the industry's balls in a vice like grip of kudos and commercial nounce? - Discuss....
Was that the show Seasick Steve played on? His bassist was playing a Precision. Struggling to recall the guys name though.............. , ah that was it, John Paul Jones................. Probably a bit poor & didn't have much by the way of instruments to choose from
12. The Gedster is my bass playing hero & I do love my Jazz, however it's not been without its problems..... The tuners are very average - looking to upgrade them to Hipshot B-2's shortly. The paintwork doesn't seem to be that durable - a few more minor dings than it should have for its limited use to date. And then there's the neck - a shocker. Took my local guitar shop an age to adjust the truss rod as it was very stiff even though it wasn't fully tightened if you get my drift, EVERY fret end was sharp - now all very carefully filed back by me, & the D & G strings choke at the 15th fret which my local shop forget to address last time it was in, so it's going in there again. I bought this new in 2006 & won't bore you with the details of why I am just getting this bass sorted now. I bought it from The Bass Centre by mail order & it's the last thing i bought or will buy from there!! Thing is, it does sound bloody good though...........
13. An "ooops, I've bought another bass without selling this one first" type bump. Will now chuck in a Planet Waves locking strap into the deal like this one:- http://www.dv247.com/guitars/planet-waves-50pla04--55453 Noticed these S5's on Ebay & the sellers have set a buy it now of £450. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Maverick-F5-bass-gui...=item43a730a83e http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Maverick-S5-Bass-Gui...=item1e63d520e2 I'll say it again, this is a brilliant price for this bass - a semi pro instrument for Squier money. Still open to sensible offers too

GAS Gone Mad

Three brilliant basses - I couldn't pick a favourite, they're all gorgeous! I would say they definitely should all be keepers - a trio of excellent basses in your mums memory is even better than just the one.
15. I've got GAS for a fellow bass chatters instrument that's up for sale, so i now need the green folding stuff asap. Here's a couple of opinions about this model from Harmony Central (note both buyers paid £550 & the first one did in Jan of this year). http://www.harmonycentral.com/reviews/346081 http://www.harmonycentral.com/products/100719 Asking price is a bargain, but now open to offers so pm me - you never know!!
16.
I'd say the silver series squiers are probably more desirable because they're MIJ, but the pro-tone stuff is very similar in quality and feel. There's also not a great deal of difference between them and MIM standard Fenders, but again, the Fender branding ensures MIM std's will always fetch a bit more. All in all, it should be a really good guitar, but as others have said, is at least £100 over the market value in my honest opinion.
There seems to be a good consensus of opinion then that £250 is tops, which I agree with. In that case the seller has had a result because he sold it for £350!! More fool the buyer for not being a bass chatter!
17.
+1 I've never really seen the point of putting effects pedals through the effects loop on an amp, especially for bass. Bass Big Muff works perfectly inline with my other effects.
I spent pretty much a whole day swapping things around on my rig &, by quite some margin, the set up I suggested sounded best across all my pedals. Not that i'll take any credit for it, as i was only testing out stuff that i read on t'internet!!
18.
I think Steinberger headless basses will soon be making a comeback worn right up under your chin. The sleeves of your jacket rolled up obligatory (mullet optional).
Had to chuckle at that one!!
19. Bass Big Muff Pi everytime for me. Whatever you eventually get & if your set up allows, put it between your bass & amp instrument input. Run any other effects separately through your effects loop.
20.
I've played one once & it wasn't a bad bass for the money, the bottom line though is that it's definitely a budget instrument. I wouldn't say it was on a par with Japanese Fenders I've played which have all been excellent quality-wise. I think you'd notice quite a big drop in quality if you're moving from that Maverick 5 string you're selling to one of these. I'd certainly try it before you buy it if possible £400 seems a bit steep to me - I've seen them go for £250 - £300.
Thanks for your post - I did have my doubts about the price for sure, & was thinking £250 would've been nearer the mark. I think a MIM fiver would be a better quality instrument & generally they sell for around £350 on here. I can't see the seller of the Pro-tone dropping the price that much - i'll have to wait until a passive MIM gets posted for sale!
21. I'm thinking of buying one of these. 1997 model in excellent condition for its age. £400. I've yet to physically see it - anybody got experience of one? I'm led to believe these are as good as a MIM or CIJ 'proper' fender. Does that price seem about right? Ta in advance for any info.
22. A bump with some spec info:- Two piece American alder body AAA Indian rosewood fretboard One piece Canadian rock maple neck (with a nice grain pattern on the back!) Trim pot in the rear cavity for adjusting the pickup gain Action is very low with virtually no fretbuzz & there are no deadspots either. 'Tis genuinely a lot of bass for the dough.
23.
They are very hard to do properly. Usually takes about 20-30 years of constant use. Anything else is a waste of time. imho of course.
+1 to that. Artificial relicing of any kind just sucks...
