5 for me. 5 strings should be the new bass standard!! Anything lower than a B would be too flappy to play & anything higher than a G is just pointless. (Are ERB players just frustrated guitarists? Just go get a baritone guitar if you need those high notes & want to play chords - leave the low zone to those who like groove!!)

Here's some of my faves: YYZ - Rush Digital Man - Rush Vital Signs - Rush Malignant Narcissism - Rush It's possible that a might be a Geddy Lee fan..............
I have mine (Korg Pitchblack) last so I can mute any extra noise from distortion pedals (although my whole rig is really quiet, even in a poorly earthed rehearsal space). If I were to get delays like the post above, I might consider moving it.
Ditto: I have a Korg Pitchblack to & it also sits last in my effects chain. All my pedals are true bypass, so it gets a good signal & mutes all but one of my pedals if I need it to. (Bass Big Muff Pi sits between instrument & amp, whereas all my other pedals go via the effects loop).
Hi, just a little tip for posting the photo's. Go to the album and hold the mouse over the picture and a little box pops up around it with a button that says 'share|copy', under that it says 'IMG code' and next to it a box with some code in it. Click on that code and it's automatically copied. Then when your typing your post here, just hold down Ctrl and press v on the keyboard and the code will be pasted like so; [ IMG ]http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/paulwilcock/Maverick%20S5/CIMG2796.jpg[ /IMG ] but without the spaces. When you submit your post the code will show up in the thread like this:
You are indeed a top banana - many thanks for the tip & original post amended accordingly! Thanks again.

There is a possibility that I may be buying a bass from another basschatter, but should I do that I will need to generate some funds first! As a result, for sale is my much loved Maverick S5 (in fact I have two of these!). In case you have never heard of Maverick, they were a British manufacturer that closed it's doors a couple of years ago. If you have heard of Maverick then you will already know of their reputation of producing excellent guitars & basses that punched massively above their pricepoint. About this one in particular, I bought it from a local guy early in 2007. Condition wise it did suffer from an incident of strap failure in 2008 which has caused some cosmetic issues, but in absolutely no way at all effects playability or sound which is why I have been happily using it since. Condition then: headstock is fine, neck is fantastic - excellent fretwork, no sharp edges & I cant find a deadspot. Body - the finish has slightly rubbed away (thanks to a Planet Waves locking strap) on the top bout (covered up by the strap). Around the jack socket on the back lower edge of the body is where the majority of the cosmetic issues are - there is a chip through the finish & a couple of cracks in the finish. There is a 3cm crack in the finish (which is difficult to see unless close up) on the front of the body by the rear volume control. All these were caused by the same strap failing incident as the bass has been very well looked after generally. Other than this, there is the usual bucklerash. Despite this, as you can see from the pictures, it still looks great. Component wise the instrument scores very highly :- two piece American Alder body, Canadian rock maple neck, AAA Indian rosewood fretboard, Maverick branded Gotoh tuners & an ABM bridge. Active circuit with adjustable gain trimpot in the body cavity (foil lined & paint screened) & 3 band EQ. It's got a natural woody tone, but add some bass & treble & reduce the mids it can sound thunderous!! One other thing to note is the narrow string spacing which just aids playability once you get used to it. The new RRP on these was originally £599 & as I write, there is a used one for sale on Ebay for over £400. Due to the cosmetics I am selling this for £195 which is a steal. I just cant think of another 5 string active bass that will get close to this one in terms of ease of playing, sound & quality components for that kind of money. I would rather deliver or meet up with a buyer instead of trusting a courier. Happy to travel up to an hour away from Swindon at no extra cost.

The failure of the LG350's fan to work properly is a common problem with this amp - it's why mine was returned to the retailer with a refund request after it cut out on me. I've also had an LG1000 go up in smoke.............. Good that some people have found a work around by adding feet, but personally I wouldn't have felt comfortable gigging with an amp with a known technical issue. If it helps, I've heard of a few people attaching clip fans to the top of the amp somehow, & leaving these running all the time to keep the amp cooler.

I don't know if they still sell it, but I used an EP1500 for a while. It was surprisingly good to be honest. Very loud, noise free, & a very transparent clean sound. I read somewhere an article by an electronics engineer who said that model was well put together too - certainly mine was totally trouble free. (I coupled that with their Bass V-amp pro - ran two Ashdown cabs in parallel as both the EP1500 & V-amp had two channels. I recall in someway using the EP1500 low pass filter too on one channel & on the 'Rock 2' setting of the V-amp, I ended up with a pretty good & usable 'Ampeg' like sound. I have a Hartke/Ashdown (different cabs) rig now & tried a few others in between, but I wouldn't say that Behringer set up was a dog. It did alright for the money)

I was facing the same question a few weeks ago. I bought the Bass Big Muff after reading a comparison review in Bass Guitar magazine (annoyingly I now can't find the issue -probably filed somewhere safe.....). They said both were very good pedals, but gave the nod to the Big Muff. I'm very happy with it I must say - very controllable & it has a switch to mix in the 'dry' signal which works very well in retaining the bottom end.

I use one of these:- http://www.diago.co.uk/pedal-power/pedal-power/ Very reasonably priced, powers all sorts of pedals via adaptors & as quiet as a (dead) mouse!

I've just bought a Gold Lion ecc83 (12AX7) from this company http://www.hotroxuk.com/ & that was an improvement over the Sovtek 12AX7-WA my amp was shipped with. Whilst doing a bit of research, stumbled across this article which you may find useful. http://thetubestore.com/12ax7review.html

Defo have a go with a 5 string - I did three years ago & my Geddy Lee Jazz hardly gets a look in these days! Sort of wondering why the 5 string hasn't become 'the standard' bass over a 4 string to be honest - extra low notes & no need to detune: no brainer!! I would say though, trying a more modestly priced instrument first makes sense. I've got two Maverick S5's & if you can find a used one for sale it will be for very modest money (less than £400) & you would get a bass that could compete with instruments costing at least twice as much.

I've had 500w & 1000w Superfly's & both the LG models in the last two years & now have a Hartke head - enough said? To be fair the LG's did sound brilliant, but were unreliable (one went up in smoke, the other kept cutting out as the cooling fan worked at odd times!). Love Ashdown cabs though - had a couple of MAG's for three years & recently have replaced those with a couple of Klystrons/Classics. All these speakers have been excellent.

Well the Genalex Gold Lion valve turned up today &...........................it made hardly any difference to the hiss. For anybody that might want to know, the valve I pulled out was a Sovtek 12AX7-WA. What I have noticed now is that the amp seems slightly louder at any given point on the volume control & that notes are tighter a better defined. Low notes are controlled better & the treble is a bit 'glassier' - so not a total waste of £35 then.... (& at least I have a spare valve in the original Sovtek). So what now? I've only tried this amp out at home in a fairly small room & I'm thinking that in a band environment, this hiss may not be an issue (thankfully in a loud rock covers band). Our next band get together is at the end of the month though so I won't know that for a few weeks More research & posts on this thread indicate a mixed response - some LH500's hiss & others don't. This could be a quality control thing, although when I had the lid off replacing the valve, the internals looked very well put together - everything was totally neat & tidy. Bearing in mind the hiss on my amp occurs with nothing plugged into the input too, the only other variables I can think of are the cables & the speakers. I bought new cable for this amp due to the 1/4 inch jack outputs - Klotz cable with genuine Neutrik jacks so I'm thinking they should be fine. The amp is outputting to two Ashdown Klystron/Classic cabinets - these are excellent quality cabs so perhaps their transparency is just letting more white noise through. Or I could just have a faulty head in some other way.... On balance I think in a band environment all should be ok though. Thinking of the tone & volume from this amp for, let's face it, a very reasonable £299. (NB: item bought from Soundslive - a company I've bought from many times. A bit disappointed then that they were very quick off the mark when I was on the 'phone wanting to buy, but clearly a punter who is not entirley happy with his purchase is a bit of an inconvenience to them....... Big difference to The Academy of Sound who bent over backwards when my Ashdown went tits up, & gave me all my money back (in warranty) when they ran out of options)
I've got the LH1000 and found that replacing the valve with one of higher quality made a difference. Also attenuating the horn in my 4x10 reduced the hiss too. I also found that I had some noise from the effects board too (not using the FX loop of the amp though). I'm not entirely sure whether I eliminated all of it as I've recently been using a compressor with a built in gate which has killed ANY background noise, maybe not the solution for everyone, but worked for me.
Thanks for your post. Interesting that you felt the need to change the valve, so valve noise may be an issue with some of these amps. I think I will order a top quality valve & see what happens. I've actually turned both horns off in my cabs as I can get a trebly enough sound from this amp without them on! From the sounds of it though, most of your noise was coming from your effects board / instrument - if you are not using the effects loop & plugging into the front end + all noise has gone by introducing a noisegate, then most of the noise must have been pre input. Mines got loads of white noise with nothing plugged in
-
Many thanks for your posts guys. Dood - tried your process. Connected active & passive basses into their respective inputs (separately obviously!) & amp hissed way merrily. Put a good instrument cable in the effects return socket & the hiss went (mind you, doing that muted the whole sound - was that to be expected?). Unplugged both basses & the hiss was still there. Didn't actually try it previously with nothing plugged in the front end - the hiss was quieter, starts getting noticeable at about 5 on the volume control, but to me, still way to loud at 7 (although will I ever need to have it that loud is another question.....). I think the basses are a contributing factor, particularly an active one, but as a couple of the other posts are saying their LH500's are silent I'm thinking I have a noisy pre-amp. As you say, possibly the valve is the guilty party. I've mentioned it to the retailer & he was going to get some advice from the distributor so I'll await their response & take it from there.
