Just an inquiry here, I've spent my last few months pretty much focusing on learning prog ( rush in particular ) so after nailing yyz, spirit of the radio, strangiato, etc, i've found myself pretty rooted to that style and unable to break out really eager to learn some funk/soul to boost my repertoire, I don't think i've actually found a song I enjoyed learning in a good few months, last one was rhythm stick by the blockheads I believe, Just wondering if anyone can reccomend any artists or songs which take a fair amount of technicality and have a pretty tight groove ( nothing crazy like teen town ) Cheers!

I appreciate the feedback, I found a laney rb9 ( head and cab ) in a shop today for 250, although I could probably haggle him down more, worthy investment? Or am I better off waiting for something better?

I've just come into possession of about £300, and i'm needing something to gig with, playing roughly 2 gigs a week of varying venue size A band I saw recently used a trace elliot bass amp which gave off a brilliant sound, just a quick inquiry what would be a worthy investment, Can probably buy off here if needs be in the next couple of weeks. Cheers.

Me and my band have recently boldly decided to set up a home studio, With us all buying individual recording gear ( I.e Drummer buys drum mics ) and chipping in on the software/mixing desk, I'm not sure what my options are for recording gear, any suggestions?

From the sounds of it somewhere near the nut

The only problem on it is a rather annoying buzz when I play open A.

I was considering a decent set up, would I be better off going just to a music store, or someone independent?

Recently purchased my first fender, a Mexican jazz in Arctic white, maple neck and fingerboard plays beautifully and is without a doubt the bast bass I've ever owned. A close friend of mine played it recently and reccomended I Put in some Seymour Duncan basslines and perhaps change the bridge, Just looking for some opinions, I love the tone but I'm wondering what could be done to perhaps personalise and improve it on the cheap. Looking to add a new Scratchplate too If anyone knows any cheap dealers?

I've played quite a few 5 strings, not really my thing, getting a fender mex jazz next week when I get paid.

Some interesting stuff here, thanks guys, Probably gonna have to think less about all this theory shizz, writing is my biggest problem, but listening to so much rage/audioslave tends to mean I can only write like that. I'll try listening to some funk/motown see where that gets me, I don't know if this helps, but the bass i'm playing on I feel really uncomfortable with, I'm buying a fender jazz next week, along with a better amp, see if that gives me some creative sprirt.

I play along to a lot of music, my favourites tend to be the likes of zeppelin, rage, soundgarden, pearl jam, guns'n'roses, velvet revolver and tool The main problem right now tends to be, I don't really have the patience to sit down and learn something complex like rush, and I can't write stuff at all.

Hey, I've been playing just short of 2 years now and I've been practising strong 2-3 hours a night for the last 6 months, But I feel like I'm not getting anywhere, I've learned every scale and arpeggio in countless different positions, practised fingerstyle speed for months, listened to a lot of bands, to gain inspiration but I find it difficult to progress, I can't play fast, all the riffs I write end up being rage-esque minor pentatonic riffs, which quite frankly all sound the same, I don't feel like I'm really paying my load into my band, things made worse as it's only a 3 piece, I just don't know where to go, I can't slap, can't tap, can barely use a pick, I have no grasp of time signatures, just not sure what to do to improve, Thanks!

I've been playing seriously about 18 months now, just joined my first serious band and I'm looking to start gigging, I need a decent amp, but I've got no clue where to start, Looking at a budget of 400 or so, Just looking some advice on what make, combo or stack, etc Getting a lot of money In a couple of weeks so just trying to get a good idea of what I want. Thanks

I'm usually always using three fingers when doing the faster maiden/metallica stuff... the speed can't really compare to the metal around these days tbh

Thanks a lot for the advice everyone, the rest technique seems to be making things a bit less painful, great idea

I've been practising 16th notes at about 100bpm for about 2 months now, yet I Can't go any faster, It's sluggishly boring and I really don't know how I'm going to get up to my target of 16ths at 160bpm, Just wondering if there's anything to make the process a little less tedious, Thanks.

sorry for the slow reply guys, i was out. umm I'll try to get a bridge picture up tomorrow, and i'm located in the north east, i've never changed bass strings before, plenty of experience with guitar strings though.

Firstly, apologies if i've posted this in the wrong place, i'm new. Recently I restrung my Squier vmj bass and as I was finishing up i noticed the A string had come loose of it's holder in the nut. I placed it back in but it seemingly refuses to stay in place, coming loose of the nut whenever I attempt to play. I'm not having this problem with any of the other three strings. Can anyone offer me some advice? Thanks.

North east, in between sunderland and durham, to answer you both.

Thanks a lot for your help. What you've just mentioned was what pretty much split up the band, I was just starting out and not looking to start somthing serious. And I'm currently taking bass lessons from a guitar teacher but they're only for 25 minutes a week during school time. I wouldn't know where to look for an experienced bass teacher.

I was in a band for a while when i just started playing but we didn't share any music tastes really and we didn't get on so that didn't work out. And I like to play all sorts of stuff, but at the moment i'm focusing on learning material from : Led zeppelin, Radiohead, Kings of leon, Muse, Pixies , Stone Roses , Rage against the machine and Rush ( i'm really getting nowhere with this last one ) But as I say, I keep forgeting a large proportion of basslines, and i'm not sure just learning songs is going to help for the future.

Hi all I'm 15 and i've been playing about 10 months now Bass pretty much occupies most of my free time and i find myself playing 4-5 hours on a good day. But no matter what I do, I can't progress in any direction, i'm confident in playing both pick and fingerstyle, i'm confident on all the basic scales and arpeggios all over the neck and I have at least a basic grasp of theory but i'm really not sure where to go from here, I learn at least a few songs a day but it seems as I practise new songs, I begin to forget old ones, I've tried literally everything and for the last 3 months my playing hasn't improved at all, i feel like i'm not good enough to join a band just yet. Could anyone give me some advice? Thanks.
