Just to play devil’s advocate for a second - I went from an (admittedly older ) Ashdown ABM 500 to GK stuff, and was shocked at how much better it was, for me anyway. Used their 700RB for years and loved it, later only swapping it for a 1001RB which I still use. Also got an MB800, great little amp as well. Just sayin....😀

Possibly Big Deal on Eastgate (or before that just round the corner at the top of Vicar Lane?) Was only looking in there last week , plenty of stuff but the prices now have gone crazy - damned internet made them far too savvy 😕 My first bass was probably a second series JV Squier Precision, 57 style, Black with maple neck. Wish I’d kept that one. Think it was replaced by a late 70’s sunburst US Precision , bought in Leeds, possibly from Big Deal. Got it for £195 IIRC, but was total rubbish. Heavy , dead and sounded dull as anything. Being an American Fender though it wasn’t hard to move on, and for a small profit too 😊. Was replaced by my 63 P-bass which I still have and always will.

Thinking about it, maybe 10 actually. 63 P bass Fender Precision Lytes x3 ( Sunburst x2 and Frost White) - all late models with chrome h/w. Bought these as probably the lightest basses I can use for the gigs I do. My main one has done hundreds of gigs, the others are for when it wears out! P-bass -unbranded metallic red with matching headstock (kept as stage spare, only used it twice I think). Danelectro Longhorn in blueburst - early Korean reissue Washburn AB 20 electro acoustic s/b Taylor GS Mini-e electro acoustic Countryman Uke bass Tanglewood Elfin mini P- bass ( bought when I broke my shoulder to get me back into gigging! ) Great seeing some of the serious collections on here. Of course, had to show them to Mrs CP so she could see how miserable my few seem now....😂

Keith has been using 355's for a while now, if its' good enough for him etc...🙂

Good advice - get on the Trace bandwagon now whilst there are still bargains to be had! You won't lose money should you want to change your mind (if you buy at the right price- you may even make a little more back! ) , and there seems to be no shortage of Trace stuff kicking about at the moment. Go for a 250 / 300 watt combo or head with a suitable cab.

This. I've never ever played a bad MM, and I've owned quite a few. Their consistency and quality have remained constant over many years of production, and for me the Stingray remains the obvious next step to experiment with after a Precision. I also think a Ray is one of the best looking basses ever made, and the only reason I no longer have any MM's is due to my shoulder injury which prevents me from using anything much over 7lbs in weight. (If anyone has a really light MM please feel free to PM me now!)

Think that was their Delta range. Two heads ( 300 or 600 watt) with blue front panels and also in combo + extension cab form. Sounded quite nice as I remember, designed to take on Trace in the late 80’s but unfortunately about the same weight 😄

Yup, agreed. I’ve always quite liked Robert Cray on record, so went to see him live a good few years ago and felt a bit disappointed really. So many minor blues, either fast or slow, with the same licks in each. All got a bit samey after a while, and (never thought I’d say this after so many guitarists sounding like a wasp in a jam jar) the super clean spiky guitar sound got rather tedious and could have done with a touch more balls. Liked his more recent’ soul’ type stuff though, and appreciate his efforts in bringing blues back to the fore etc. As grumpyguts points out, great voice/ singer too.

We were in the south of France a few years ago, and walking along The Croisette in Cannes there was a large marquee on a private section of the beach, with a band soundchecking - soon realised it turned out to be John Legend doing a corporate gig.

Reclaim the 4x4 Mart, buy SVT all valve head and matching 8x10, job done! 😄 Just wondering why you've specified two 4 ohm cabs, as this may really limit your options when buying a head that will work into 2 ohms comfortably?

The GK MB200 is a belter, although I haven't put one up against any of it's competitors directly. The Elf does seem well liked on here, although when I tried one recently I was more impressed with it's small dimensions/weight than the sound. Was in a shop environment though, so may come a bit more alive in a gig situation. Also tried the Peavey Mini-max which sounded good, and again very small and lightweight.

Bit of a tense one last night for us. As we soundchecked at Sheffield City Hall it became apparent that our singer was really struggling with his voice, and we worried we may have to pull the gig. Fortunately he decided to go ahead, and after a few dodgy moments in the first 3 or 4 songs his voice somehow regained it's strength and he powered through the rest! Really pleased, as we always have a good crowd in Sheffield, and they didn't disappoint - up on their feet in the 2nd set and lots of smiling faces. Great venue too, with top staff and facilities. All in all a good gig for us, made better by good pizza and beer in the nearby Brew Dog bar too!

This. Got my GK 1001 in an SKB 3U rack case, and my tech guy made me a wooden block to support the rear weight and thus relieving the strain on the 4 front rack bolts. ( He even painted it black to make it invisible too, bless him. )
