Worst bass you've ever played that you did not own.
casapete replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in Bass Guitars
I used to be a bit like that, till I had issues with my shoulder and hand that makes a high action too much. When playing guitar I still prefer the action a bit higher than most I think, can't be doing with stupidly low sets ups that rattle and choke etc. Mind you, I also prefer big round necks too, so must be a bit of a masochist -
One of the first 45's I ever bought was 'I'm a man' by Chicago, on the old orange CBS label. It had this amazing song on the B side, which blew my 11 year old mind at the time. Didn't get the first 1.15 of piano TBH, but then when the full thing kicks in, wow! Swings like crazy, and started me off in my appreciation of great brass sections.

Dep bass player and hire the PA to them.

One of the few brands that I’ve never played a bad example of is Musicman. Sure, there’s been ones I’ve preferred over others, but their excellent quality has always been pretty consistent to me. Maybe the one you tried had been messed with or something? Agree with you about Yamaha too - never tried a duffer, even the cheaper ranges. -

Shouldn't that just read '....was cheap' ?!! -

Combo amp? Size? Wattage? (newbie bassist question)
casapete replied to PTV's topic in Amps and Cabs
+1 to both posts above. As Lozz said, Fender Rumble range all punch above their weight in volume and tones available, are lightweight and priced fairly IMO. Great amps - the 200 or 500 combos will see you well through most gig scenarios. -

Africa - like you've never heard it before?

That's what I thought when I first saw it TBH. My mate who sent it said there are others on YouTube nearly as bad though, so am guessing it's for real. -

I’ve tried a couple of Taylor GS Mini basses and loved them! One man’s meat etc..... -
Did a gig in central Paris with my band. Took a Transit and a car, and didn’t have any problems - no worse than any other major city anyway. Agree with the comment above regarding bump parking though - saw evidence of it a lot. Check that you have what you need for driving in France now -spare bulbs, reflective jackets, warning triangle etc. Also an updated sat nav, and check if you need the recently introduced ‘Clean Air’ stickers for your vehicle.

Someone brought a Taylor AB2 acoustic electric in to my weekly pub gig for me to try. Really expensive when new, but it completely underwhelmed me. Maybe due to a poor setup and old strings, but I just couldn’t see the attraction at all, despite usually liking Taylor stuff. My Washburn AB20 played and sounded so much better, to me anyway. Tried a friend’s vintage 1960’s Epiphone Rivoli a while ago, which he’d just acquired. Couldn’t believe how it played and sounded - muddy doesn’t even begin to describe it, and then there was a bass boost switch too which made it more or less unusable to these ears. Add in some serious neck dive and dodgy intonation and you have an expensive ornament really - it did look the business though in faded tobacco sunburst. -

Apparently he sang the choruses on the original recording, with David Paich handling the verses. So you would think the choruses at least would be okay?!! -
Anybody seen this? Looks amazing. ATB Guitars in Cheltenham do sell some choice vintage stuff. They also have a mint 1980 MM Stingray in at the moment. https://www.atbguitars.com/store/product/1965-fender-jazz-bass-sonic-blue-ohsc-nr-mint-1965fjbsb/

Friend of mine sent me this - thought it was a spoof at first, but not so sure now. Anyone else seen it? Bobby Kimball, formerly of Toto. Was never a fan of the song, but this takes it to a new level! Bass player's face says it all I think.

OK, what we have here is an Avon P-bass, model number 3428, from the mid 1970's. Made in Japan, with what looks like a 3 piece ash body and maple neck. As far as I know it's all original, with the exception of the knobs which are recent due to the originals having gone walkabout for some reason. Plays and sounds great, strung with 45-100 D'Addarios. Action is medium / low. Only thing it could do with are two machine head bushings - the tuners all work fine though. Weight wise it's on the lighter side - my rather primitive scales say around 7.5 to 8 lbs, and it does feel like it. For a 40+ year old bass it's in pretty good condition - some marks etc but nothing horrible. PM me for more pics if you're interested. All in all a great Japanese P-bass for the price of a s/h Squier. Cash on collection greatly preferred - I'm in East Yorkshire 10 miles west of Hull. Possible help with delivery / meet up, depending on where and when of course. I do travel around a bit, so you never know! Postage / courier is an option, but would probably need to involve a hard case at an additional cost. Any questions please ask, cheers.

I just hope there are enough people of my age / attitude to make hard copy music still viable for some time yet. Never one to embrace new technology quickly (was late to the party with CD format, swearing vinyl was king ),I still can’t get my head round not owning some music I love rather than just playing it. Probably comes from a few years working in a large record store in the 70’s, and spending a large part of my wages there too! Although not overly materialistic, my music collection is one of my few things I would hate to give up, along with instruments of course. Our kids already don’t have any means of playing cds in their houses, so I guess it’s just another of those things that move on. And don’t get me started on turning off analogue radio.....

Absolutely! I can never understand why some players have disdain for simple lines, especially if they are essential to the song.
-
Absolutely Lozz. We get lots of stories sent to us about how important certain songs are to them, and it's easy to forget this and get caught up in the playing/gear/band side of things. At the end of the day, the audience are why we're there, so it's best to put them first - after all, without them we wouldn't be there! Our best gigs are where we've connected with everyone in the room, that's when we know we've done a good job.
-
Isn't it strange how often the best gigs are ones you don't expect to be much good, and those you look forward to can be so disappointing? We play some great theatres all over the UK, and it's often the smaller ones in provincial towns that prove to be the most enjoyable for me.

Brian Wilson's band when he started touring again in the early 2000's was partly made up of a band who at the time were performing as a BW tribute act. Apparently they were doing a show somewhere one night and Brian was on the front row! I've seen them perform together 3 times and it was amazing each time - certainly some of the best gigs I've ever seen. Ironically they have now fragmented a bit, some of the band leaving to tour with The Beach Boys and the rest remaining with Brian. They are doing some UK dates this summer.

Just try A/B ing each gig, till you decide if there is an overall preference. A pain perhaps, though you may be surprised at the results. I generally prefer the sound of my cab directly on the floor, but as mentioned above this can occasionally lead to boominess on hollow wooden staging. When this happens I just put the cab back in the base section of it's flight case (on castors) - simple.

Just watched it on catch up. Thought Tower of Power were very good, but a little bit too frantic / muso for my tastes if you know what I mean. Bass sounded great though! Surprised how much I enjoyed Plan B, although a bit baffled as to the white face paint?!! Betty Lavette was okay, and Jools didn't play all over her. As for Shame, didn't get it at all, but then again I'm probably not supposed to. Looking forward to the next few editions, still a great music programme after all this time.
