  1. My two fave bands at this time were The Faces and The Stones. Their recordings from then still stand up now IMO. Always hankered after a Zemaitis bass like Ronnie’s too, so cool.
  2. Yup, found that out the hard way with my upright! Was quite taken back by how quiet such a large instrument could be when played pizzicato - the difference between that and bowing is remarkable.
  3. Around this time there was also Ronnie Lane, ex- Small Faces and member of the newly formed Faces. Their early albums had a big effect on my guitar and bass playing as a teenager. Taken from us far too soon as well.
  4. Absolutely love my Washburn AB20, but in over 20 years of owning it I’ve never once found anywhere ( other than solo practice at home ) where I even thought of using it unplugged. Probably only a double bass would be able to hold it’s own unamplified with some acoustic guitars I’m afraid.
  5. Sorry, but have to disagree about Motown bassists lacking excitement compared with rock bassists. As a young teenager at the time, the sound of ‘Bernadette’ and other Motown gems coming down the corridor from my older brother’s Fidelity record player was enough to convince me to give stuff like Black Sabbath and Led Zep etc the elbow for good. All my mates were into heavy rock at the time, and Motown wasn’t considered hip at all, which somehow made it even more special for me. Soon as I started playing bass I certainly didn’t want to be Geezer Butler that’s for sure.
  6. Mike Campbell is one of my all time favourite players, and he never fails to amaze. One of those great guitarists who plays for the song, and can solo brilliantly when necessary. I think he fits in fine, and despite not being a FM fan I think they sound okay. Neil Finn seems to be doing a good job too.
  7. Definitely, although I do feel after the brilliance of the solo the song dips a bit and struggles to maintain the drive and energy it creates.
  8. With the exception of Coldplay ( I don't know what would improve them for me) all the other bands work because the rhythm sections don't overplay. Bad Co & Free in particular had spectacular rhythm sections IMO, who completely understood and used an understated groove to make the songs work. As Mickeyboro said in the above post, they could also cut loose in a live situation where necessary.
  9. I’ve found the Snark ones work well, and are very wallet friendly too. Careful talking about clip on tuners on here though, better have your crash helmet ready....
  10. Great , thanks. Found some at allparts, pack of 8 for £2.50. Result, cheers!
  11. Need help in sourcing a part for the bridge of my bass. Of course it would help if I knew what it was called! It’s the threaded support for the saddle, one of a pair for each saddle. Allen key adjustment , black metal and as the bass is an Indonesian made Dearmond am guessing it will be metric sizing? Will post a pic when I get the bass back from a mate if that helps. Any ideas what they’re called so I can start Googling, or anyone have one they want to sell please? Thanks in advance for your help fellas, cheers. Pete.
  12. PMSL. Thanks for posting. 😂
  13. In order to stop the endless stream of messages asking ‘Is your amp/guitar still for sale mate?’, I now put on my listing ‘If you’re reading this then it’s still up for sale’. Doesn’t stop some still doing it though. Must admit though, so many people fail to update or delete adverts. Really bugs me when you enquire about an item only to be told it went a week ago.😠
  14. Offer now extended to end midnight tonight, Friday 31st August.
  15. Had a good start to the autumn leg of our tour tonight in Glasgow. The Kings Theatre is a great venue, and the crowd were their usual self, loud and lively! We always have a good turnout too, one of our favourite gigs. The gig itself could have been a bit dodgy - we have a new lighting engineer and it was his first gig with us. Also one of the cello pickups played up and had a problem with the drums just before starting, but miraculously all went well. Lighting guy was amazing, got most of the cues and didn’t leave me in total darkness! Was good to be back doing it after a month off. Stoke tomorrow, then Halifax on Saturday and Bristol on Sunday, so will be knackered Monday no doubt.
  16. This is how I still roll. The occasional bad description/nutter maybe, but all you risk is your time and a bit of fuel. I am getting more reluctant to give out my full address much before the arranged time of collection when selling something too. Most buyers are friendly and just want to chat about themselves/ their band/ their instruments etc but have had the occasional dodgy type who I’ve wondered is casing the joint. Actually prefer meeting up somewhere or local delivery for this reason. Getting a bit paranoid in my old age perhaps😕
  17. My old function band used to have deps to cover illness etc. However, one time there was a massive mess up with the diary, which meant we were double booked for a prime Saturday in July. This resulted in us splitting the 8 piece band into two bands, each with 4 original members and 4 deps. We got away with it too!
  18. I’ll beat Bluewine to this and go with Paul McCartney. Legendary player/songwriter, and manages to come up with amazing bass lines whilst singing brilliantly. His vocal range has changed as he’s got older, but for me still is up there for all time greatness. Bassist who do lead vocals I also admire? Alan Gorrie ( Average White Band ), Justin Currie (Del Amitri), Jack Bruce.
  19. Strengths - Am blessed with a good ear / can busk really well. Worryingly encyclopaedic knowledge of tunes means I can dep with a lot of bands. Reliable, sober and a team player. Can do good BV’s on the fly and fit in with whatever others are singing. Always listen to all the band and keep all my kit in good order. Weaknesses - Can’t slap, play basses with more than 4 strings, solo. Won’t entertain IEM’s even though I know they probably make sense. Can’t remember keys of songs so need a set list with them on. Despite being good on BV’s, have a very bland voice for lead vocals which I sometimes overlook and instantly regret.
  20. +1. There is a 200 watt job currently for sale on here for £200 which would see you fine for most gigs ( and also lightweight and sound brill.)
  21. Just had notification that there is 20% off all D'Addario strings at Strings Direct, until midnight on 30th August.* Code for the checkout is DADD20. Cheers, Pete. * Offer extended to midnight Friday 31st August
  22. Mmm, don't get it myself. Sounds like it's trying to be too like the original, but with some well dodgy chords thrown in for some reason.
  23. Just out of curiosity, did all the Sterling SUBs have unpainted necks? I've had a few SUB Rays and they've all had black painted necks. Cheers.
  24. Thanks Doc, just a tad too heavy for my knackered old shoulder I'm afraid but not stupidly so. GLWTS, cheers. Pete.
  25. Would be interested in this if it’s light enough?
