  1. Also the thought of Alan Price doing Purple Haze could have been interesting.
  2. Always used to amuse me in the late 70's / early 80's to see all the punk and new wave bands on TOTP. They knew that going on the show was really compromising their ideals, but couldn't resist the opportunity to shift some units, and therefore used to to mess around & mime badly ( or not at all..) in the mistaken belief they were being so anti-establishment for their fans. I worked in music retailing at this time, and the effect of a TOTP appearance ( however bad/good ) was massive on sales, so they obviously knew what they were doing. Lots of those bands would not have had such success without TOTP and the Beeb in general, yet liked to give the impression of biting the hands that fed them. All good for the image I guess.....
  3. Agree with Bill. Cut and run, as top end speaker repairs don't come cheap.
  4. Think there's one on there from some minger though........
  5. Just done all the Beatles albums chronologically over the weekend - easy to listen to as they're mostly quite short! Oh yeah, and also brilliant - such a varied amount of songs, doesn't feel like the same band at times. Lots of lesser known tunes really stood out too, amazing.
  6. Good excuse to watch this again - Status Quo miming on ITV's 'Daybreak' in 2011. Wait for the track jumping around half way through, does it a few times. Francis not happy...
  7. I've done private functions for years in my previous band, some amazing and some quite underwhelming. What you need to remember is nobody has come just to see you, they are there for the event and the socializing. We used to find it rewarding when a corporate / professional kind of do which looked like it would be full of people not listening turned into a jolly event with a full dance floor. With my ELO tribute band we occasionally get asked to do private events, usually because the guy booking the entertainment is a massive ELO fan and doesn't understand that most of his audience won't be. At one such event we were asked by the punters to play Mustang Sally / Brown Eyed Girl etc and they didn't get why we didn't do them
  8. I saw this over Christmas, and despite not being a massive Oasis fan, thought it was very good. Sat down thinking I'll give it ten minutes and ended up watching it all. Some very funny bits too.
  9. I use the Fender ABY, and it’s great. Doesn’t make any noise when switching between two basses either. For around £25 it’s a no brainer IMO.
  10. Hartke for me. Their HA3500 is a classic, great eq and loud as hell. Often see them going for c. £100 s/h , bargain. Also my GK Backline 300 is a recent favourite, use it as a spare amp. At rehearsals the other day I set it up and A/B’d it with my 1001RB and there wasn’t much in it. Certainly not the £400 difference I paid anyway.
  11. This is an interesting guitar! Despite looking all over the net I can't find out anything about it, so will do my best to describe it here. It's a black single cutaway model, with obvious nods to some influence by Zemaitis designs - please note though that this is NOT an original Zemaitis guitar! ( If it was, it would be £10k at least, and even their later Japanese models go for £3k + ). I have seen other guitars similar to this ( made by Alden etc) but never one the same. This one also has the Zemaitis style headstock which seems quite rare for such a guitar. So, am guessing it is of Far Eastern origin. It is a fixed neck design, has 2 humbucking pickups, chrome Grover style machine heads, 24 & 3/4" Gibson style scale length. Glossy black finish, with 4 diamond inlays on the body and further inlay all around the front, unusual but classy and subtle. Les Paul style controls ( 2 vol / 2 tone and 3 way pickup selector). The neck is great - not super skinny but not a baseball bat either, with a large Gibson style radius. Frets are as new, no wear at all. Nice Zemaitis style inlays too, and feels very Gibson like. Plays fine, good intonation etc. recent set of D'Addarios fitted. Weighs around 8lbs so not silly heavy either. Overall in excellent / almost new condition, with just a couple of under the finish imperfections that I couldn't photograph clearly. Nothing to worry about, you have to look for them. I would say quality wise it's easily as good as a decent Epiphone, so have priced it accordingly. Would be great for someone in a Stones / Faces / Black Crowes type of band! It comes with a used but still serviceable oblong Gator ABS case that fits perfectly. Cash on collection please - I am 5 miles west of Hull , near the Humber Bridge on the north bank of the Humber. Possible help with delivery / meet up etc for fuel costs, but would rather not trust this to a courier at the moment. ( No trades thanks, need to reduce my guitar collection! ) PM me your email for more pics. Cheers.
  12. Must admit I did consider this in my situation, but really then you end up with who makes the most noise type daft stuff, which quickly escalates into stupid stuff. Think my SVT 8x10 rig would have won mine though.....
  13. I live at the end of a terrace, and had dreadful problems with our neighbours shortly after we moved in. Their 17 year old son was learning drums at college,, and the first time I heard him practice it was like the kit was set up in my living room, really! After this happening quite regularly, I went round and had a polite word, pointing out that it was stopping us living our normal time at home etc. The parents asked me if they could arrange a set time for him to practice, which we reluctantly agreed to. Sure enough, after a short period the lad would beat ten bells out of his kit whenever his parents were out. After compromising so much, this was the final straw so I went round and politely told them to stop completely or I would seek advice from the council. ( Acoustic drum kits in terraced houses are just a no no, as are bass and guitar amps in my opinion.) The result was they didn't speak to either of us for years, and despite the drumming stopping they bought him a small electric kit to practice with (as I'd suggested ages ago) which I could still hear when he hit the pads, but thought it was tolerable following what had been going on before. The neighbours actually came round a bit after the lad left home, and we do now speak etc. I think they thought I would be okay with the drumming as I was a muso, but didn't get it when I told them it was like working in a loud factory environment all day and coming in to the same row when I got home. Much as I dislike them, headphones are really the only solution I'm afraid. Or move house of course...
  14. I like this, though more of an old school vibe for me. That sound of when the guitar amp's power amp valves are just at the right level, making it full and on the edge yet somehow still clean and ringing with no fizzy crap. For me it's Keith Richards (Honky Tonk Women etc, not Satisfaction!) , Pete Townshend, Mike Campbell etc etc. I dislike the way that guitar sounds have changed to it being all about lots of distortion which robs the true tone of the guitar, and the way sounds are now obtained via masses of pedals and obligatory single preamp valve type things. A lot of players now never touch their instrument's volume and tone controls, just preferring to dance on pedals for every adjustment and often ending up with a thin 'wasp in a jam jar' noise. A good guitar, straight into a quality valve combo, is for me still the best way to a great guitar sound.
  15. Try it! Keep the volume low and increase it gradually, letting your ears decide if it starts to sound like it’s struggling / distorting. Bear in mind it wasn’t designed to have to belt out such low frequencies though. As a low level practice solution it may be ok, just don’t expect SVT standard levels / tones
  16. Agreed. Although in our set there is one song which finishes on a long open E, which I let ring on into the intro of the next song also in the same key which starts with a long keyboard intro. One gig a while ago I couldn’t use my active bass ( due to electrical interference for some strange reason?) and had to use my spare P-bass replica. The note didn’t hang on quite as long and left the intro rather empty. Isolated incident though, just saying.
  17. Know this won't be everyone's cup of tea, but the new Eric Clapton biopic 'Life in 12 bars' has a 'live' UK release this coming Wednesday, 10th January, with various cinemas all over the UK showing the movie and a live Q&A session afterwards. More details here - https://www.planetrock.com/news/rock-news/eric-clapton-life-in-12-bars-live-uk-cinema-event-announced/
  18. As with nearly everybody else, my main one is heavy amplification. Barefaced literally changed my life, so much that even small conventional cabs now seem too heavy. No GAS either for - Any effects pedals whatsoever Anything with more than 4 strings ( too heavy and can’t get my head around them) MM Stingrays - probably my favourite ever bass, but unless anybody has one for sale that is > 7.5 lbs then it will have to be a distant memory. Rackmount tuners Coated strings - tried some and wasn’t blown away, especially for the price. Will stick with my usual D’Addarios.
  19. I really dislike gold hardware too, would be a deal breaker for me I think. Probably because all the great basses I’ve ever owned or had GAS for have had chrome or nickel. Currently have 3 Fender Precision Lytes, and made sure they were all the later models with chrome hardware. The earlier ones had gold which IMO not only looked blingy but also had a reputation for peeling off very quickly.
  20. Thanks. Always good to know a music fan appreciates what we do, as we are primarily a theatre band. I always check out anyone in the audience wearing official ELO T-shirts etc to make sure they stay till the end!! Any links to the Lee Pomeroy article you mentioned greatly appreciated.
  21. Know what you mean. That distorted and slightly sharp thing can get tiresome.
  22. Cheers - we are playing the Churchill Theatre in Bromley on Wednesday 7th March. We have 2 cellists and a violinist, all ladies although can’t guarantee how sparkly they may be We did get a visit from Lee and some of the other guys from ELO to a gig in Richmond a while back. They were rehearsing with Take That nearby and decided to come to see us afterwards. They introduced themselves after the gig, and we chatted for a while. Lee is a great bloke, and it was really good to see them, and quite nerve wracking too! I would love to see the article where we get a mention if you could let me know? Thanks.
