1. My AB20 is shallower than many electro acoustic basses, and a lot comfier to play as a result. Can't measure it as not at home at the moment, but would guess around 3 to 3.5 inches deep. Great basses, love mine.
2. I use my rig to get the sound I want onstage, that's how I roll. By compromising too much on reducing bottom end or not having enough clean headroom then I may as well go down the IEM route really. I honestly don't believe one 4x10 to be excessive. I rarely have the PA engineer tell me to turn down / reduce the bottom end etc - if he does then I'll work with him to find a compromise, but usually he has enough leeway to balance the FOH sound.
3. Maybe this Peavey EDI would do the job? £48 so within your budget too. http://www.ccmusicshop.co.uk/product/peavey-edi-direct-box/
4. I did agree with the OP about smaller / one speaker cabs UNTIL I got my Barefaced Compact, which completely changed my ideas. I've gigged with it in fairly loud situations with no PA support and it's never really struggled, powered by my GK1001RB. However, I still prefer to use a GK 4x10 for my main gigs. My band doesn't play really loud, but there's just something about the sound / dispersion I like (maybe just what I'm used to?) I've never used single speaker cabs before this, having had the usual 2x15 / 8x10 / 4x10 stuff. Did a gig depping a while back with a function band where I used the bassist's Mark Bass LM amp into a small MK cab (1x12 I think) and honestly wondered how he coped. It sounded on the edge of breaking up at fairly moderate levels. Even with PA support, you are often relying on the monitors being good enough to cope / sound ok etc., so I prefer to have my sound behind me and go from there. Outdated ideas maybe, but works for me.
5. I had a Peavey 2x10TX cab a few years ago, and seem to remember it not being that bad weight wise. ( Or am I just remembering it in pre Barefaced terms? ) There's an Ashdown 2x10 kicking around on Gumtree ( I think) for £50. They're quite heavy little b*ggers. Will keep my eyes open for the 4x8 too. Am loving the bolted to the floor idea as well, am sure we've all had cabs that felt like that.
6.
I changed my playing style a few years ago to a low action and light touch. I completely overhauled my playing style & technique. I also learned how to set up my basses properly and I ditched my compressor. It was a six month journey to get my playing feeling natural & normal again but I haven't looked back. Like you, gig and rehearsal fatigue just isn't an issue any more. You will get your dynamics working again, it may take a little time to find the subtle touches, but it's all there waiting for you. Be patient and keep at it.
Me too. Always have set my basses with a medium action and dug in a bit. Always hated basses that buzz and rattle even if it doesn't come through the amp. However, since having some hand problems I have set my regular Precision Lyte a bit lower, and subsequently use a lighter technique. Seems to have helped as my hand hasn't got any worse, if anything it has improved a little. Takes a while to get used to, but for me has been a revelation. I now do a two hour show with ease, something I thought would not be possible before. Would recommend trying it - easy mod that can be put back if it's not for you :-)
7.
The key is knowing when to stop.
Indeed, knowing where to refrain with no reprise.
8. Sure it wasn't accidental?
9. Not quite sure if this fits the OP, some more band's 'disco' tunes - Floyd - Another brick in the wall ELO - Last train to London / Shine a little love Pulp - Disco 2000 Abba - Gimme gimme gimme... Daft Punk - Get lucky
10. Agree with the above. Despite being fairly light & loud for their ratings, the Fender 100 watt Rumble will still struggle with even a light handed drummer. ( Haven't tried the TC combo you mention. ) Why don't you consider a reasonable head / cab rather than a combo? One more journey to load in / out but better than breaking your back IMO. As ever, s/h will get you a good deal, especially if you buy from this site. Good luck!
11.
Quite - we must all have wildly varying tastes. For once I liked most of what was on this episode although I too found the Goldfrapp dancers mildly worrying. I can't imagine why anyone would want to rewrite Bootsy-like bass parts either but there you go! Indeed this particular episode contained bass throughout. It was great to see B J Cole. As for Jules himself, I think he's ok and a good muso - I generally don't slag off musos as I feel some affinity in where they're coming from. I've mellowed over the years to the orchestra, helped by being bought a ticket to one of their gigs as a prezzie, thinking I wouldn't like it, and then finding they were highly impressive and truly excellent live - only marred by not giving Mr Swift a little cameo feature, as he's excellent as well. For true fans he has a radio show as well late on Monday nights on radio 2 which features some cool artists. Now if the show had included the likes of Morrisey and Weller I'd most likely have reached for the remote control, as I regularly do with Later!! Different tastes eh....
Great post, couldn't agree more. As has been said countless times before, probably the only (mostly) live music programme that consistently showcases both new and old artists to a mainstream audience. Sure, some weeks I don't particularly like any of the featured bands, but that doesn't make it a bad show, just means it's not to my particular taste. Long may it continue.
12.
Indeed... I quite enjoyed it - as I usually do, oddly. I say "oddly" because I'm by nature a metal/prog head so Jools never caters to "my" taste. However the show frequently exposes me to music I would usually never listen to, and sometimes this is quite refreshing. This week's show did feature some great musicianship and songcraft, and while I won't be supporting the careers of any of the featured artists, there was a lot to appreciate. The only thing that really left me nonplussed was the country & western lady - in fact my vocalist partner erupted in gales of laughter as soon as she opened her mouth and all those mawkish, generic cliches poured out. The fact she was there shows that there's always an audience and a market for the same old same old, I suppose.
I enjoyed the performance by Courtney Marie Andrews, being the sort of music I often listen to ( along with many other genres ) which is one reason why I usually watch 'Later with Jools'. Another reason being it's fairly light on metal and prog, which doesn't seemed clichéd at all to me.....
13.
I saw that tour at Wembley. I seem to remember Black Uhuru on the bill too.
Me too, with Sly and Robbie :-)
14. Fender Rumble range have some that are okay. The 25 watt model can be had for less than £130, the 15 watt for around £85. They are quite loud for the ratings, so the smaller one may well be enough for you. Also the Ampeg BA-108 V2 ain't bad, gives out 20 watts for around £100. If you have any intention to play in a band setting at a later date, you may be best getting a larger combo on the second hand market. Your £150 should get you something that would do the job, so keep an eye on the 'amps for sale' section here. Cheers.
15.
Courtney Marie Andrews and her lap steel guitarist were really good. The rest was a bit of a so so, good musicianship, but kasabian thought it was still 1995.
That was B.J.Cole on pedal steel. He's long been the foremost steel player in the U.K., having played on numerous sessions and tours. Superb player and a great guy too.
16.
That makes mine look a bit piss poor by comparison.
Sorry, wasn't trying to belittle your condition, or scare you either !! :-)
17. I've had Dupuytren's for a number of years now, and touch wood it doesn't seem to be getting much worse. Interesting facts in this thread, and the condition is prevalent in string players generally as well as bassists apparently. Mine looks worse than it is! Been told as in previous posts that no action will be taken until the fingers start to curl under, so am just hoping I can continue playing with no problems. Bill Nighy is a famous sufferer of this condition, and often poses for photos so as to hide his hands from showing it.
18.
There is one on eBay at the moment, Pete, though not blue. http://www.ebay.co.u...iwAAOSwol5Y48CZ
That's rather nice Paul, as was your white one too. And there's me , thinking GAS was a thing of the past.....
19.
You need to play one to make sure you can live with the sharper edges as compared to the more traditional J bass.
Agreed ^^^ Nice basses, usual Japanese high build quality and finish and most importantly (for me anyway ) they don't weigh a ton. However, the sharper edges aren't for everyone, so as already posted you do need to try one to ensure your style / playing position isn't compromised. Incidentally, still kick myself over missing a gorgeous blue Aerodyne Precision a few years ago, which IIRC suffered from the same sharp edge / lack of contouring. Good luck!
20. Washburn AB20. Had mine for 20 years+ and it's still sounding good.
21. Been using my GK MB800 for gigs these last few weeks, and sounds fine. However, at a gig last night I returned to my GK 1001RB and must say I really do prefer the sound. Maybe it's just because I'm more used to it over these last few years - whatever, it's going nowhere. Will keep the 800 too though, will still come in handy I'm sure.
22.
A great musician, I saw him with the Stones on the 76 tour, he played Nothing from Nothing and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efLOr3tM1KI They had The Meters as the opening act as well !
I saw this too, amazing gig. Billy was also amazing on the George Harrison 'Concert for George' show that Clapton helped put together. Great musician and by all accounts a great fella too. Sadly missed.
23. Just for you Chuck fans, BBC4 have a 1972 'In Concert' showing tonight (24th March) starting at 9pm. It's been shown before, but is worth a look. Cheers.
24. Great looking Sterling, the grain is ace. Not a bad weight too, nice one!
