I remember seeing an interview with Jerry Wexler about recording Aretha. Said he couldn't get her vocal only performance nailed until he realised she needed to be playing piano at the same time for the magic to truly happen.

Excellent stuff. Always best to never underestimate what your music can do, whatever the audience size / venue / event etc. So easy to get blasé over your performance, "just another gig" thing, so when the audience reacts well it makes you realise what it's all about. Keeps me going!

Absolutely. Great basslines too on much of her stuff from Chuck Rainey. No one to touch Aretha in my opinion.

Also for me the fretless ones are a bit pointless, as the differing sound of the strings touching either the fretboard or the frets is minimized by their rubberiness!! As slides are also out of the question, the fretless is in my opinion a non starter. With the short scale / unusual strings, you have enough to get your head around without the direction/security that frets offer!

Just another +1 for the Countryman. I've had mine around a year now, and use it every week at an acoustic gig on those songs which sound better with an upright-ish sound. Always get good comments on it, usually along the lines of " how does that tiny thing sound so huge" etc. Nobody buys these to play unplugged unless it's a bit of home practice as they sound completely different from when used into amplification. I use mine straight into a Yamaha mixer amp with a pair of Bose 802 speakers, and it is incredible what tones can be had. It cost £149 last year. I tried the Kala one before buying, and couldn't see where the extra £200+ went to be honest. Certainly try one out if you're in the market for one, think you'll be impressed.

There are great sound guys out there, and as with everything else in this world, it's the few dodgy ones who give the rest a bad name. I've nearly always found if you treat them with respect then you get that in return.

I had the SVT 3 Pro, and liked the tone but seemed a little lacking in volume to me. Think I remember someone on here posting how to set them up to get round this though? ( sadly after I'd sold mine).

Seems I'm the only bassist on here who doesn't think Phil Lynott was ever cool ( ......................[i]runs for cover[/i]................................)

And another +1 for OBBM. Used his cables for years with absolutely no problems, wouldn't go anywhere else for them now. Fairly priced too, job done.
