Halfway through a set and you smell burning......
casapete replied to Paulgm1's topic in General Discussion
Years ago when I played guitar, I had a Vox AC30 actually catch fire onstage at Knaresborough Working Mens Club. Nobody apart from myself seemed unduly worried for some reason. Was impressed that it actually kept going though whilst the fire took hold. Sold it for 'spares and repairs' for what I paid for it, despite some charred components! -
Use a solid bass. If you're playing amplified there is no tonal benefit in having an acoustic bass, and as you've discovered it's got plenty of disadvantages.
Mmmm, don't entirely agree with this. I've used my Washburn AB20 with an eight piece band, and with careful positioning of amplification I found I could just get the level needed to sound okay, whilst retaining some of the inherent acoustic-ness of the tone. Shoving acoustic basses through conventional bass amps does rob them of much of their signature sound, but using them into a good PA can still maintain this IMHO. I've gigged mine for years in an acoustic duo to good effect, usually with a small Yamaha / Bose PA for café / pub gigs. Also use my Countryman bass uke for more upright tones too.

What was the first major festival you ever went to?
casapete replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
Blackbushe Aerodrome, near Camberley in Surrey, summer of 1978. Not my first festival, but one which made me think they weren't really for me... Billed as 'The Picnic', there was a massive crowd, with various estimates saying 200,000+ Five of us went in my brother's Ford Anglia, and I remember the traffic jams being horrendous, especially after the event. Think it was NCP handling the car parking, and they buggered off after the gig leaving a free for all for all the cars to exit the airfield. We were stuck there for hours. Good lineup though - Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton ( who guested with Dylan for a few songs too), Graham Parker and the Rumour, Joan Armatrading and others. I remember helicopters flying over the crowd , dropping badges that floated down in paper wrappers - still got mine somewhere. Did anyone go,to any of the Jazz Festivals at Alexandra Palace in the late 70's? I went to a couple, and managed to see amongst others Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and Johnny Winter. Think after a fire there it moved to Knebworth in the early 80's? Great lineups, and worth sitting through some jazzers I'd never heard of at the time ( Lionel Hampton, Sara Vaughan etc) to see some great blues artists. Edit - just remembered they were run by Capital Radio, called 'Capital Jazz' I think. -
Congratulations to you both! All the best for a long and happy life together.

Eric Clapton. Lifelong fan, but recent releases have left me unimpressed. Know he's not a young whippersnapper anymore, but don't really get his laid back noodlings. Live, it's another story. Saw him recently and he was on fire, both guitar wise and vocally too. Makes me even more puzzled by his recorded output really. Still love the guy though.....

My favourite strings, and I've tried most over the years. Always come back to these, last a good time for me and love the tone / feel. EXL170's suit me just fine.

Bring me up to speed on the world of bass amps
casapete replied to richardjmorgan's topic in Amps and Cabs
Another shout out for GK here. The MB800 is a great head, small, light, lots of tones and bloody loud. If you're unsure of the class D thing for some reason, the GK700RB is a great amp, and can be had for around £300 ish s/h. Weighs 18 lbs too so not a back breaker. -
..................... and why do they turn up with 10 minutes to go before you start and hand you their microphone, put their instrument case exactly where you intend to stand and then wander off to the bar while you deal with said mic and then wait for them to be served. They always clear off moments after the last number finishes.
Because they can..... Would hazard a guess that most brass players have usually just had to carry their own instrument and little else to a gig, and don't 'get' the concept of lugging / setting up gear etc. Also as they are usually great readers, some hold other band members with an amount of disdain perhaps? Also never met a brass player who didn't drink on gigs, which they excuse by needing 'lubrication'. Having said all that, I hold a grudging admiration for these guys. I've been fortunate to have worked with some amazing players over the years, and never ceased to be amazed by what they can do. Have you ever tried to get something out of a trumpet / sax / trombone? Respect!!

Due to lack of storage facilities I need to sell my 'spare' GK Neo 410 cabinet. It's the 8 ohm model, rated at 800 watts. It's been a great cab, only being used in theatre shows by me with my GK head so never hammered. It's in good used condition, no rips etc and looks tidy. According to the GK website it weighs 64lbs so quite light for a 410. Features/Specifications:

Impedance: 8 ohms
Power Handling (RMS): 800W
Power Handling (Peak): 1600W
Sensitivity: 103 dB
Maximum SPL: 132 dB
Frequency Resp (-3dB): 30 Hz - 19 kHz
Woofers (Neodymium): 200W 32 ohm
Horn (P-Audio): 25W 8 ohm
Porting: Front-Ported
After testing it before selling, I've noticed a slight rattle coming from one of the drivers. To be honest, I just don't have the time to investigate this further, so thought I'd offer this on here to someone who has. I have contacted a speaker specialists, and if the driver needs reconing it will be around £40 + £15 return p&p. So you could have it all sorted for just over £200, which I think is a fair price. (These premium cabs new are currently £745, with GAK are doing them for £719) Cab is in East Yorkshire just west of Hull, collection only although possible help with delivery depending on where and when etc. Meet halfway maybe in Yorkshire / Midlands / N.E. for diesel costs? I could also bring it to one of the following upcoming shows with my band for you to collect from a theatre. These are in Sunderland (14/6), Maidstone (16/6), Ipswich (17/6), Woking (22/6) Shanklin I.O.W. (23/6), Brighton (24/6), Epsom (29/6) and Horsham (30/6) PM me for more pics via email. Cheers, Pete. Yup, really annoying although to be honest have found all my deals via this site have been 100% Am currently waiting for a guy off Gumtree to pay me for a mixer I'm selling, haven't heard anything for a couple of days now so am guessing he's cooled off. Quick text is all it takes to let me know. Grrrrr.....

Amazing! Wondered what it was.
Exactly. Shows what can be done in a short space of time. It was pretty flawless in terms of organisation and the Police/staff were all in high spirits. I do think this demonstrates that maybe more of these events should take place for charity. Musicians giving up time and effort and all proceeds to a good cause.
+1. Great event, with some genuinely moving moments. Mega house band, and some acts surprised me by being so good - Niall, Little Mix and Ariana herself, whose vocals were pretty much bang on all night. Not a Coldplay fan, but thought they did well too, and Liam was okay. All in all a well organised event with hearts truly in the right place.

Storming gig last night at Leicester De Montfort Hall. 1200 enthusiastic punters and a great in house db PA system made for a memorable night. It was our first gig after a 5 week layoff so well pleased.

Just sold a case to Graham. Good feller to deal with, quick payment and communicated well. Recommended. Cheers Graham!
