1. Just found this in my inbox. http://www.musicradar.com/news/11-reasons-why-being-a-bass-player-is-awesome?utm_source=Adestra&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=17923&utm_term=1272076&utm_content=321247
2. This ^^^ Every time I hear the original I'm always surprised by how slow and groovy it is compared to the later versions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwB40qTfuvI
3. Electrovoice EVM15B speaker, 8 ohms. Unsure of the age / power handling but most likely 200 watts - (I believe the later ones may have been 400?) Works and sounds fine. It comes with a free custom (home!) made small cabinet, lightweight ply construction and contains a piezo tweeter, which is currently not wired up but can easily be if that's your thing. 2 rear bass ports / one jack input / steel grille. Looks tidy, black painted finish. Dimensions are 19"wide / 21" high and 12" deep. Weighs around 42lbs. £60 , near offers invited! Cab is near Hull, East Yorkshire. At the moment will be collection only, possible meet up depending where/when. I travel around the UK a fair bit so PM me if you're interested - soon will be in Leicester, Southend, Liverpool, Oxford, Sunderland and Maidstone. Message me for more pics. Cheers. 4. Selling my Soundcraft Spirit FX8 mixing desk. It's in excellent working order. It has just a few cosmetic marks and has one knob missing (which I didn't realise) and one knob not original, but they are readily available for less than a pound . It has had the original power supply hard wired into the unit, as the unusual factory connection on these were notoriously a weak link, so definitely an improvement. This is a top quality desk, made in the UK to a high standard. Definitely better than others like Behringer / Mackie etc, and will last for years. They were originally over £500 new I believe, so an excellent buy at this price. Mixer is near Hull in East Yorkshire, and I would greatly prefer collection or a meet up somewhere. However, I will post if necessary - no idea of the cost right now, but would imagine £20 would easily cover it as it's not that bulky / heavy. PM me for more pics. Cheers. NOW SOLD THANKS! Full manufacturer's spec here - These days there's simply no excuse for a live mixer to give anything away to a studio mixer in terms of audio quality. With its combination of live and recording-oriented features, plus all the usual benefits, the FX8 is ideal for both stage and studio use, and is particularly suitable for live recording. FX8 is a flexible 4-bus mixer capable of producing Digital sound quality for both live and recording applications. It features a specially designed 16 program Lexicon Effects Section with dual effect capability (including Chorus and Reverb, Chorus and Delay , and Reverb and Delay) and fully editable and storable programs and parameters., The console itself includes 8 mic/line inputs and 18 inputs to mix in total (including 4 stereo inputs and tape return to mix). In addition to the mix outs, two sub-buses allow groups of instruments to be sent to multitrack, to additional speakers, or sub-grouped to mix. FX8's 8 Direct Outs are individually fader pre-post switchable so they are equally useful for recording in the studio or at a gig. All FX8's 8 mic/line inputs are equipped with UltraMic™ preamp which provides a full 60dB of gain range and +22dBu of headroom, meaning that the FX8 input stage can handle virtually any mic or line device. In the EQ section, a "truly British 3-band EQ" with swept mid benefits from custom designed pots which give greater control across carefully chosen frequencies. There are 2 Auxiliary Sends, including a dedicated Lexicon effects send, 1 pre-fade send and 1 pre/post-fader selectable send which is equally useful as an extra foldback send in monitor-heavy live applications, or as an effects send in studio mixdown situations. In addition, there are four Stereo inputs, a separate Mono Sum Output and 2 Subgroup Outputs. 100mm faders are used throughout, giving more accurate control during complex mixes than standard 60mm designs, and all pots have been custom designed to give even and consistent response around their entire sweep. The use of the latest PCB surface mount technology means that FX8 fits all of these features into a rugged, compact frame which can be optionally rack-mounted into a 10U space. Applications: Live Sound: Bands, Small Venues, Clubs, Conferences, Schools, Houses of Worship Studio Recording: Digital/Analogue Multitracking (8 track), Small/Home Studios, Pre-/Post-Production • 18 inputs as standard Key Features: 8 mono channels with high quality UltraMic™ pre-amps 4 stereo inputs 4-bus architecture, with sub-group routable to mix Direct outputs from channels 1 to 8 for multitrack recording Direct outputs can be switched globally pre- or post-fade Inserts on all mono channels Inserts on stereo mix bus 3-band 'British' EQ with swept mid-band Stereo 18dB/octave 100Hz high-pass filter to cut stage rumble +48V phantom power Channel On switch fur Mute control 10-segment tri-coloured metering Two sub-group outputs Separate mono sum output
5. Motown seeping into my pre-teen sub-conscious, been with me ever since. Along with the usual other stuff - Stones, Beatles etc. and then later on country / r 'n'b / blues. Wish I'd started playing bass sooner, as I spent many years learning piano and then being a fairly average guitar player. Should have realised I was predominantly listening to the bass lines of most of the music I was absorbing, but hey-ho I eventually got there!
6. I find my Precision Lyte (P/J configuration) used to hum in older theatres, rather than more recent ones. The techs always said it was my bass/ amp but it didn't do it all the time. Got a Fender Noiseless jazz p/u fitted and seems to be the answer, although still occasionally hums a bit, aaaargh......
7.
Yep you and 50% of the world bass playing population. Peavey are pretty much single highhandedly responsible for making 10 loaded bass cabs a "thing" back in the early 90s, I remember buying my first 4x10 (a tx natch) for something like £115 new I was just dumb founded at the sheer value for money.
They did, although it has to be said that Trace Elliot were probably responsible in the UK for the popularity of the 4x10 primarily. Peavey , as you rightly point out, were just such better value for money though, and were (are?) frequently ignored by the gear elite who wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Also, they made both 8 and 4 ohm models unlike most other manufacturers. For people who thought them unhip, the Peavey logo was easily removable from the grille, leaving just a very useful looking (heavy) black box. Bang for the buck doesn't get much better than a 410TX.
8. I enjoyed Paul Weller, especially his new song 'Long long road'. Wasn't sure about the string section though, poor balance and a few tuning issues maybe? I'm not a massive PW fan, but like his more recent stuff. Thought Naturally 7 were amazing too.
9. Great things these Yamahas, well worth the asking price. I had the EMX88M and it served me well for years. GLWTS - bump!
10. Congrats Basschat! 10 years for me and still loving it. Here's to the next ten.
11.
Please tell me it's for a wedding?
Along with 'Young hearts run free' maybe......
12. I go to quite a few of the northern shows, always an interesting few hours. Don't expect too much bass-wise, they tend to be mainly guitar orientated although this can vary. Some good deals to be had on accessories, especially strings. Often a few stalls with lots of spares which are hard to find elsewhere other than t'internet. Live music sessions are popular, and again vary a lot. When these are running it's the best time to look around the show as they draw a good crowd away from the stalls. Enjoy!
13.
I saw 10cc live a few years ago and they were musically great. My only compalint was that they were so good and tight that I felt I might as well have listened to a CD. Don't get me wrong, I like good and tight, but the great thing about live music is that it can come out slightly differently every time, different solo's repeated verses, different banter etc. and I didn't get any of that with 10cc.
Mmm, interesting lyrics though on the last verse of Rubber Bullets on the Tuesday edition.....
14.
Seeing as were getting nostalgic and slushy..listen carefully to anything Bee Gees wise...monster studio playing on it all.
Apologies for this if you've never seen it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GhsUQJ8go8
15. I tune my bass 45 mins before we start playing, and then 2 or 3 times maybe each set when there is a gap / song that doesn't need me in from the start. May seem excessive, but the theatres I play in have a habit of being often very chilly before we start, and get a lot warmer as the set progresses (with the lights / audience etc!) My bass is never far out, but like to keep it spot on. Must say though that the accuracy of modern tuners make things look a lot worse than they sound, a few cents adrift appearing to show up as way off! My (apparently extremely uncool) Snark clip on tuner is great though, accurate but not ridiculously so.
16. Probably the king of the (mostly) forgotten art of rhythm guitar. Remember hearing 'Le Freak' on an imported 12" single for the first time in 1978 and being totally blown away by the whole thing, especially the guitar and bass. Was fortunate to see Nile and his band a couple of years ago in Leeds, amazing gig. Another 70's tune with great guitar was George McRae's 'Rock your baby'. Sounds deceptively simple but powers the song right through.
17. Agree that the Peavey TVX410 is a very underrated cab, mainly by label / brand snobs. Just weigh a ton though.
18. She's on The Graham Norton show, Friday 12th May.
19. Think the Fender Bassman cabs with the 'pyramid' design were from the very late 60's/ early 70's? 4x12 designed to go with the Bassman 100 heads.
20. Regarding strings, I've found the best ones for my Washburn AB20 are Elites bronze, which I think are 40-60-80-100 gauges. Seem to last a good while, and stay a bit zingy too if that's what you want. Fender bronzewounds are okay too, similar gauges I think but for me go off a bit sooner. Cheaper than the Elites though, so you pays yer money etc.
21. Saw these at a guitar show recently. Had a quick go on one and they were actually okay, although rather strange to hold. ( Maybe I'm not the best judge though as I do like Danelectros and other oddball stuff!)
