IME only the very biggest names playing original music, or the songwriters in long running bands with a large back catalogue can get away with not having some other source of income during the times when the band isn't touring or recording.
From my experience, working in a professional band whilst trying to work around all the member's various day careers / day jobs can be a nightmare, resulting in the inevitable conflicts of interest unless you are very fortunate. Maybe best if we define the term 'professional'? This can appear to mean 'relating or belonging to a profession', or alternatively 'engaged in a specific activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as an amateur', which is the definition that usually springs to my mind. And let's not get into figuring semi-pro....

Professional band, all with day jobs? Mmmm.......approach with caution.

I broke my shoulder / arm a few years ago, and playing bass guitar was not an option for a few months. I bought a Roland D5 synth off here, and my band very graciously allowed me to play my parts on this. Sounds were not 100% convincing bass guitar, but played through my bass rig and then into the PA it was fine. I didn't have anyone come up on gigs and ask why there were now 2 keyboard players in the line up, or comment on the bass sounds. A hideously low-fi solution I know, but needs must etc ,and as a pro musician it saw me through until I was well enough to return to bass guitar. I actually quite enjoyed the change to be honest, and found it liberating not having to wear a bass on long gigs. Was great to get back to my Stingray though.....

Always done it as well, never had a problem. Reminded me of this too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8OYeN9mAL4

Still a cracking deal for someone though surely? Sold my SVT rig for a grand over 20 years ago, still miss it.

I thought it was fantastic. Great film with lots of interesting location shots, totally absorbing.

You definitely need some way of playing along with songs / tracks to make sense of what you're doing. I use a small mixer for both recorded stuff and my bass, and then into headphones. Lines which sound dull and uninspiring come alive when put into context.
The driver is one one aspect of the design. The cabinet is as much if not more, that is why some of the boutique makers charge so much. Add to that they are made in the developed world, not the far east and in many cases are pushing the designs, and supporting the customer, in ways that major manufacturers are not. And of course if you don't like the price but the cheaper one.
Take your point, but my Peavey was made from US components, and assembled in the UK (Corby?). Some 1x12 cabs with a r.r.p. of nearly a grand do make me wonder TBH.

Gallien Krueger 1001RBII / SKB rack / Korg Tuner - SOLD!

Really sorry to hear this. Visited the shop a couple of months ago for the first time, and was well impressed with the stock and the friendly staff. A sad sign of the times.

Agree with the keeping it simple approach. Sometimes doesn't need to be even root/5th, just root/root!! Lots of skill in not overplaying and thinking about exactly where to put the notes in each bar so as not to lose the groove. I love it....

Gallien Krueger 1001RBII / SKB rack / Korg Tuner - SOLD!

Selling my GK RB1001 II amp head, complete with SKB X rack 4U case and Korg DTR BL rackmount tuner. The amp puts out a nice 700 watts into 4 ohms / 450 watts into 8 ohms plus 50w tweeter amp into 8 ohms. Not stupidly heavy either at 8.2kg. Sounds great, with excellent tone shaping. It works brilliantly with my GK Neo 410 cab, either biamped or full range. The amp has recently been serviced and is functioning 100%. It is in very good condition, with only some very small marks which are hard to find. I have two of these, and this one has been my 'spare' head for a while now, having always been housed in the SKB case that is included. As with all the GK amps I've ever had, it has never once let me down. It comes with a Korg rackmounted tuner, which again works perfectly and is in excellent condition. The case has some wear but nothing serious and does the job well. Amp specs here https://www.gak.co.u...CFUKfGwod7-wFuQ Case details here https://www.studiosp...Rack_406190.htm Tuner details here https://www.gak.co.u...ount-tuner/3718 New prices for these items are approximately £745 for the amp / £99 case / and probably around the same for a newer model tuner, so you're potentially getting £950 gear for £350 which is a cracking deal. I would much prefer not to post this, preferring either collection from Hessle ( near Hull in East Yorkshire ) or a meet up somewhere. I get around a bit with my band too, so that's a possible - during November I'm in Edinburgh, Dorking, Stamford, Glasgow and Billingham! Pics hopefully here! Got more which I can send - PM me your email if interested. Cheers, Pete. Cliff Richard new single Roll over Beethoven
casapete replied to police squad's topic in General Discussion
Seeing as someone mentioned Mr Buble, have you heard this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgmFXye1FLc Possibly one of the worst covers I've encountered in recent years. He seems like a lovely guy, and can obviously sing well, but come on, really? Back to Sir Cliff, agree with the previous comments re diction etc. That's just how he does it though. And the guitar sound certainly doesn't help too.... His back catalogue is formidable though, and has some gems from all his decades of recording. -
New rig! Life after an Ampeg SVT rig.
casapete replied to Jimelliottbassist's topic in Amps and Cabs
Nice! Must be okay to follow your previous rig too. -
Blimey, crazy pricing if correct. Someone I know has one for sale, and it came via Amazon for a silly price, so could be right. Will try to find out more details. Cheers.

Was just wondering if anyone here has any experience of APC basses, made I believe in Portugal. Particularly the electro acoustic models such as this one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/APC-BG-Luthier-MX-CW/dp/B00VEAUNYI/ref=sr_1_22?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1477480063&sr=1-22&keywords=APC+bass I'd never seen / heard of them until today. Cheers Pete.

73 is no age either. Always loved his version of 'Take good care of my baby', one of Carole King's best pop songs. RIP.

Chuck Berry hits 90 ... New Album for 2017
casapete replied to skankdelvar's topic in General Discussion
Seen Chuck many times. At one of the London Jazz and Blues Festivals at Ally Pally in the 70's, I was fortunate to be stageside. 2 mins before he was due onstage, he arrived with his guitar case in one hand, briefcase (presumably containing the fee) and mac in the other. As he was announced, the band started playing and he took the Gibson 355 out of the case, slung it on and walked onstage. Started playing, despite the guitar being rather out of tune. Took him a couple of songs to sort it, then went on to play a killer set. probably exactly 60 mins long as per the contract etc. Jimmy Marsala has been Chuck's bassist for over 40 years, and often directs the band as well as looking after Mr Berry. At one gig after they began a song, he had the unenviable task of sidling up to Chuck and inform him they'd already played that one a few minutes earlier. Chuck apologised to the audience and went straight into another song in an unrelated key, leaving the pick up band floundering. Happens a lot apparently. I love the Bruce Springsteen story from the 'Hail Hail Rock n Roll'. His band were waiting backstage to play for Chuck, with no word of setlist etc. Bruce finally plucks up the courage& knocks on his dressing room door. When he asked Chuck what songs they were going to be playing, the reply was - "Well son, tonight we'll be doing some Chuck Berry songs"!! We did a couple of Chuck's songs last night at my gig in his honour, and they went down a storm. -

Chuck Berry hits 90 ... New Album for 2017
casapete replied to skankdelvar's topic in General Discussion
Chuck has n't been truly on form live for quite a while now IMO, but still keeps going. ( Not the only veteran performer who should perhaps contemplate retirement either ,by a long chalk.) As Bruce Springsteen recently remarked though - the most important writer of the rock n roll generation.
