Anyone know how much one of these is worth? It's a copy of Gibson's Melody Maker in 3 tone sunburst / 2 pickups, although with un-Gibson like bolt on neck. Think they were made in Japan in the late 70's. Can't find any pics I'm afraid at the moment. Any help appreciated, cheers.

I used to play this song on my Stingray - back treble off and whack the mid and bass up a touch and you have a Gibson EB3 ish tone. That's why I love Stingrays, so versatile and useful.

I still have a Bell's catalogue from the late 60's/early 70's. Not much bass action contained, but I spent many happy hours pouring over Marshall & Wem guitar amps, along with all the other stuff. Regarding the Grimshaw LP, saw a clip recently of Status Quo on Top of the Pops in 1968 doing 'Pictures of matchstick men' with Francis Rossi playing one! I had a similar LP copy in the early 70's, maybe same factory etc.

I get to play in a lot of theatres, and our guitarist knows if there is a loop as soon as he plugs his Telecaster in! Never had a problem getting it turned off though.

I do this sometimes in my duo - acoustic guitar and acoustic bass! The song works well like this, so don't worry.

I would agree - try it with your electric first and see how it fits in. However,for acoustic type gigs I always use my Washburn AB20. Fitted with bronzewound strings, it has a great tone for complementing the other instruments, and yet is very controllable. I think it sounds fine (I plug it directly into the PA) , and it gets favourable comments from musos/punters too. They can be had for around £200 s/h, and well worth the dosh IMO. Also worth a look in the same price bracket is the Takamine EG512C, which again is a nice bass for the money.

+1 to the above. I use a GK 1001RB and usually no probs with hum/hiss. However, I recently borrowed a GK Neo212 cab from a mate, and noticed some hissing. The horn unit appeared very efficient, so I just knocked it down (or was it 'off!') and no probs. Guess I'm just used to the less efficient horn in my own cab, but TBH even with the GK cab horn turned up I don't think the hiss was that noticeable when playing at stage volumes.

According to Wiki, the Detroit Spinners also sang on the original version of Elton Johns 'Are you ready for love', ( which is my favourite EJ track too) . Another great bass line / Thom Bell production.

Steve Wright just player 'Ghetto Child' by the Detroit Spinners. Had forgotten what a great bassline! Lots of their other stuff was equally groovy too - such as 'I'll be around' and 'Could it be I'm falling in love. Great Philly soul.

Saw VT last Friday in Lincoln. Absolutely superb band, all great players. Massive P-bass tones from Rick Barrio Dill. If you get chance to see them am sure you won't be disappointed.
