1. Tonight (Friday 28th) there is a documentary on Marshall amplification called 'Play it Loud' on BBC4 at 10 pm. Also repeated late Sunday evening too. Looks pretty good.
2. After my old SVT, probably the best amp I've ever used. Still got mine,it's definitely a keeper. Enjoy.
3. There is an hour long programme devoted to Jack Bruce on BBC Radio 2 this Monday, December 1st at 7pm. Called 'A life in blues' it is presented by Paul Jones - should be good I think.
4. Few years ago the agency my function band were signed to approached us to see if we were up for doing some UK dates as the band for a US singer, as we had a 3 piece brass section. It never came off, but I found out later it was for Jimmy Ruffin. I would have done it for nothing just to play the great bassline in 'What becomes of the brokenhearted' every night. A very sad loss. RIP
5. Sorry to hear of your problems. Have been contemplating changing from my GK stuff to something lighter / class d ish. Reading your post makes me think I'll stick with it now. My GK 1001 head is only around 20 lbs and I'm not that old (yet!) to be able to carry it. When the time comes maybe.....
6. Use D'Addario 45-100 shorties on my Danelectro Longhorn, perfect gauge for feel/tone IMO.
7. My playing mainly consists of theatre gigs to a seated audience. Whilst I really enjoy it, I find that also playing in my weekly pub residency is the perfect balance for me. Keeps things a bit more 'real' and sociable, both with band members and punters.
8. Thanks for your thoughts guys. The amp in question is a silver face, probably a 2006 model I believe. Cheers.
9. Anybody got any idea what one of these is worth second hand, in good/excellent condition? Cheers.
10. I've always avoided anything 'jazz'. I'm going to see Gregory Porter tomorrow in York in an attempt to remedy this. (Whilst not purely a jazz artist, I feel it may be a start......) Not sure about doing this with other genres I'm not so keen on (metal/opera/rap/musicals) but never say never.
11. Try talking to Lyn at The Gig Shop in Hull. http://gigshophull.co.uk/ Also HPSS http://www.hpss.co.uk/ may be able to help. Cheers.
12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg8-2mWfExI And this is another beaut- around 2mins 2secs. Tuning issues with bass as well as guitar too.
13. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t_1blRfFIU Loved Clapton's playing on this, despite howler around 6mins 5 secs. His playing then seemed more 'risky', but somehow sounded great even when missing the mark - or was it intentional?!!
14. I used a synth a few years ago after breaking my left arm/shoulder. Bought a Roland D5 s/h and played it on around 25 gigs until I could manage my Stingray again. Worked okay IIRC, and my band mates were great about it too. If I'd been unable to do this would have suffered a lot of financial hardship as was a pro function band. (Also saved me the nightmare of getting deps who turn out to be better than myself!)
15. Your GF sounds ace - just do it!
16. PM'd you mate!
17. Took a break of around 18 months when I started a family. Missed it like hell, got back into it gradually by doing deps, been pro for 21 years now! Can't imagine doing anything else to be honest, still love it.
18. No 46 currently playing - The Faces 'Stay with me' - yay!!
19. Went ampless for the first time in ages a couple of weeks ago. Was okay, but not as good IMHO. Can't teach an old dog etc....
20. From what I remember, the band let Charlie choose who he wanted and he picked Darryl Jones. That was 1993!
21. Any idea of the weight please? Cheers.
22. Whilst not condoning the trashing of phones, can't help but agree that the presence of them at gigs can be really annoying for both audience and band. Couple of experiences I've had for example - At a recent Eric Clapton gig in Leeds, we managed to get good / expensive seats fairly near the front with uninterrupted view of the band and EC. The guy next to me spent the whole gig with his smartphone held up videoing the large screen to the right of the stage, concentrating on getting the best shots etc, whilst there's an excellent gig going on just to the left in front of him! Went to see the excellent Vintage Trouble at a smallish club gig, standing only. Bunch of students in front of us held their phones up to record it through most of the gig, obscuring the already limited view we had. When asked politely to stop, they just ignored us. Only a bit of a more shall we say persuasive chat with them made them move. What I don't get is that for the most part there are often great quality professionally recorded clips available of stuff (either on sale or free on the web) that you can watch whenever, and just enjoy the moment of the live gig. Rant over!
23. Anyone seen this band? http://www.creganandco.com/ It's Jim Cregan on guitar doing some Rod stuff. Looks okay.
