1.
As far as I'm aware, there is no long scale Longhorn. Long scale options for Danelectro are the DC, the Hodad and the '63.
Agreed re the Longhorn. Shortscale (30.5" I believe?)only. Current copperburst ones are made in China, and from my experience vary a bit in the playability stakes. One sold recently on here for £110 - bargain or what! Average new price would be around £240. I've had previous models made in Korea - a blueburst and also a metallic blackburst, both excellent instruments if you readily accept their erm..design limitations. Great thumping basses - only one great useable sound but its a belter! The Korean models (late 90's era) are getting a bit harder to find now, and are slightly better built/specced than the current ones, although perhaps not as vintage accurate. I love them - great for roots rock n roll / country / blues etc. Happy to give you more Dano info/pics, PM me if you want 'em. Cheers Pete.
 2. I use Jim Dunlop Straploks, the plastic ones that cost around a couple of quid a pair. Unlike the metal Strap Lock system these does mean you don't have to alter your guitar or strap. Never had a bass come off using these yet. (Also +1 for the Grolsch washers ! )
 3.
Korea?! thats news to me. I didnt even know that any Fenders were ever made in Korea?! No wonder it looked a little different.
So where does he get 'Mexican Jazz bass' from then I wonder....?
 4. Due to needing another bass, (and now a strict 'one in one out' policy) may be persuaded to part with mine! Dark blue / maple combo, as good as new (as a £60 bass can be etc!).Plays fine, strings surprisingly ok too. PM me if interested, cheers.
 5. Believe there's a Paulman bass for sale at Antones Guitars in Hull.
 6.
Funny I used to be a guitarist but went onto bass because of course it was easier, with it only having four strings. ( here it comes.......)
You beat me to it Bob!!!
 7.
A guitarist in my band had to play bass in one of his other bands. He told me, it was a really tough night, because he had to play all the time and couldn't stop for a rest when he wanted, which is what he did as a guitarist!
Absolutely. Guitarists (& keyboard players) dont realise the luxury of being able to stop playing to twiddle with their gear / have a drink / look for the next page / have a rest / talk to the girl at the front etc etc , yet if the bass player stops for half a bar you get 'the look' from most of the band!
 8. Just got a couple of sets of 45-105's , very impressed for the money. (£7.95 from Strings Direct). Ideal for a project / 2nd bass (dare I say Sue Ryder?!!) As good/same as Rotosound Roto bass I reckon. Thanks for the heads up.
 9. Ordered yesterday at 2.50pm, arrived this morning at 9! Well packaged too, just great service.
 10.
Jakcie Wilson's Reet Petite was recorded in 1957 so (although it was co-written by Berry Gordy) it seems too early to be the Funk Bros/Jamerson. However, they are usually credited with Jackie Wilson's Higher and Higher but that was 1967.
I believe 'I get the sweetest feeling' and also 'Higher and higher' was the FB's, with 'Reet Petite' , 'Lonely Teardrops' etc from a much earlier period as you rightly point out, therefore unlikely any FB connections. Incidentally, how about that slightly out of tune rhythm guitar on the intro of 'Higher and higher'? Leaps out at me every time its played, but I still kinda like it!!
 11.
Hmmmmm,I'm not sure. The Bowie track is Jean Genie. Trevor Bolder goes to the B chord a bar early.
Saw Trevor in Waitrose last Thursday! (Apparently he gets a bit fed up of bassists asking him about 'Jean Genie') Regarding the OP, was n't it Jamerson / Funk Brothers on the original Jackie Wilson track? (Therefore could n't be a bum note.......!!!)
 12.
Does anyone know if you should notify your household insurance company that you own a musical instrument or would they just cover it under household content insurance?
Believe it depends on the value of the instrument, and the insurance company too. Mine asks to specify anything of value over £500 - just had to give details of stuff, but have got pics & serial numbers noted just in case really. Am sure that different insurers will have other criteria though.
 13.
Are any of you guys playing gigs with the new bass guitars..or just w***ing off over them..if you pardon that expression.....
Gigged mine last week - busy pub gig etc. See post #468
 14. Good sounding combo, and well built too IIRC. Great set up for newby / spare etc.
 15.
Tescos are doing the Motown Chartbusters series for about a fiver for the first four discs. Loads of classics on that.
A great buy, essential stuff IMO. Vol 3 (silver cover) is the absolute must have.
 16. Welcome Mike - another Hullite is always good! (Not that many of us on here at the moment) Cheers, Pete.
 17. Mate of mine had a beautiful Precision (early style) made by him - 2 tone SB,maple neck etc. Great bass and craftsmanship, not sure where it is now though. I went to Paulman's workshop in Huddersfield many years ago to collect a guitar he'd been refinishing - again top quality work.
 18.
TBH, I take every gig on its' merits. Occasionally I'll be asked to do something for nowt... if it's going to be fun, then I'll do it. If it's going to be for nowt because someone else is going to make a pocketful of cash, then I'll probably say no.
Absolutely +1
 19. Took mine to my weekly pub residency last night with the intention of trying it out live for a couple of songs. Ended up playing it all night! Look, its not a custom shop alternative, or even a better bass than a bog standard Precision. What it is though is a great value for money instrument at a great price - ideal as a noodler, back up or starter bass etc. Mine is fairly light/well balanced, plays in tune, sounds Precision-y, looks okay and will be easy to upgrade should I want to in the future. Also the charity will (hopefully) get some benefit from clearing these instruments too. Thats it, so really what's not to like?
 20. Just to let anyone in the York / E.Yorkshire area know - the Pocklington branch of Sue Ryder has 3 blue models currently in stock. (tel.01759 304852). Last ones to arrive maybe? Cheers.
 21.
Good one Pete- I dont think it is that bad a song but when you have been doing this song for over 30 years it feels a bit like a groundhog day moment! How are you doing anyway?- think you did a do at the Willerby Manor last week- we did the night after you- another black tie do - lots of money in there. The usual suspects.
Hey Bob - am good thanks. Yeah it was us at W.Manor, usual carry on etc (and yes we did play Mustang Sally!) Good to see you fellas still doing it in these hard times, all the best mate.
 22.
I left a band that wanted to do My Girl.... its naff with knobs on and its on my list of YEEEEEEEUCH !!
Maybe naff done by most cover bands, but the original Temptations version is sublime. Smokey Robinson's songwriting at it's best, great arrangement and band. Have a listen, you may be surprised how wonderful it is after years of hearing it done to death.
 23. +1 to most of the above. My Hohner B2A cricket bat is a great little thing. The compact size was what drew me to it - easy for gigs where travel/stage space may be a problem, and more importantly very light and manageable for old tw*ts like myself. Only disadvantage with mine is the neck being more of a reach due to the strap button position, but this can be solved by one of the Steinberger type extensions which put the bass in a better position - anyone got one they want to sell? Also on EVERY gig I use it for, at least one person will come and ask me what the hell it is!!
