I have two 4x10 cabs of identical type, one is 4 and the other is 8 ohms. To my ears the 4 does sound better - bit louder/fuller, but there's not a lot in it TBH. Always choose the 4 for a one cab solution, and occasionally use the 8 on its own ,or with a matching 8 ohm 1x15 for really loud/big gigs I use the 4 with a Markbass LM2 which never gets hot - am pretty sure amps are designed to drive the right speaker load these days, so if it says min load 4 ohms then it should be fine!

Nice unbranded P-bass replica, metallic red with matching headstock. Think this is one of the Chinese copies that were around a few years ago, and sold for around £179 then IIRC. Reasonably lightweight, neck quite slim (I'd say somewhere between a P-bass and a jazz), sounds fine. I've used it on a couple of gigs without any probs. Pretty good nick, ( only mark being a chip on the body near the neck joint ) otherwise excellent. Just restrung too! £75. With Gator hard case £100. Bass is in East Yorkshire, west of Hull. Prefer cash on collection, possible meet up / delivery though. Cheers. WITHDRAWN - going to keep it!

Slightly OT, but reminds me of something I read recently - "Too many people spend money they have n't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like".

I have a couple of grey Fender leads dating from the mid 1970's which are both still fine. They are the thin type with screwed on jacks that came free with Fender instruments back then, and I've never known one pack up yet. Still use them at home with no probs.

Last time anyone on a gig struck up a conversation about one of my Stingrays was maybe ten years ago! However, its pretty much guaranteed that everytime I use my Hohner B2A stick bass, ther'll be someone who sidles up and says "ere mate, how the hell do you tune that thing?" Markbass amp rouses some interest too, (though mainly due to its size, and not the sound I'm getting!) If I go to a gig and see good straightforward gear, I usually (perhaps wrongly)assume the bassist will be okay. ( Fender/Musicman into Ampeg etc indicates this ). Boutique bass with too many strings into latest high end amp could mean there may be some excursions into bass solo wasteland.......Of course, there are always exceptions! Old fart me?...surely not.

Just got a rack tuner from Chris. Exactly as described, arrived when he said etc. Top feller! Cheers Pete.

Few years ago I won a Soundcraft mixer amp for a bargain price, only to find the seller had 'dropped it' whilst packaging it up.
I did some research on MM Stingrays when looking to buy one after many years of playing a P bass, and come across the importance of unplugging the amplifier lead to save battery life! Glad I did, or I,d be on a battery a week!!
+1 for unplugging, but TBH I leave my Stingray plugged in from soundcheck to end of a gig, and never had problems with battery draining yet. (Of course tonight its now going to prove me wrong!) Wish there was a way of using the Ray in passive mode though, just in case. My old Fender Precision Lyte was the opposite though - used to eat batteries so I had to remember to unplug. Eventually I had a mod done to remedy this, which didnt cost that much and saved me a fortune in Duracells.
Well worth the money. Powerful and indestructible. And, unlike the SWRs I got after it, won't shatter your back into tiny splinters every time you think about picking it up.
+1 I've had 3 Loud cabs over the years - two 4x10's (4 and 8 ohm) and a 1x15. All have been fine, especially the 4x10's. ( Only had to replace the tweeter in one, which cost a tenner.) Great cabs for the money.

How long can you store bass strings for?
casapete replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I've had some strings in the past which did seem a bit dull overall compared to previous sets, so maybe older stock etc? These days I usually use D'Addarios which now come poly wrapped, so would expect these to be less prone to this. Often buy a few at a time, and have never noticed these 'degrading' as I get through them. Have bought a fair few guitar strings over the years which have pitting on the unwound strings straight out of the packet though. -
Did n't attend, but love her, especially '100 days 100 nights' album. Can't understand why she's not achieved more recognition.
I have a good friend based in Zurich who does this stuff all over Europe. He does big stuff like the Montreaux Jazz Festival & has also worked with Pink Floyd/David Gilmour as stage manager & drum tech so he really knows his stuff. I can give you his contact details if you're interested.
Thats great. I should maybe state that the gig is just a corporate do for around 200 people, so won't be needing massive stuff, but if you think your friend would still be interested then please PM me his details. Many thanks for your help, cheers.

Squier Katana bass for sale, made in Japan around 1985 / 1986. Body is probably alder (or possibly basswood?), bolt on maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, scale length 32". Standard Precision pickup/vol/tone/ with side mounted jack socket. As far as I can tell its pretty much original, with the only apparent alteration being the strapbutton moved from the original location on the neck plate to just behind the neck joint now. Bad bits - a few marks / dings (as all angular designs seem to collect), very slightly bent G string tuner ( but works fine etc), the top of the tone control knob is missing. Good bits - overall condition okay (for a 25 year old bass!), neck unmarked, frets showing virtually no wear, plays & sounds well (as you would expect quite 'precisiony') and just restrung with D'Addarios XL170's. It comes with the original black (long!) case , which is fitted inside to hold the unusual body shape. It has a blue velvet lining and accessory compartment. The case is in fair condition ('well used' should cover it) but is still functional with all catches working etc. The bass is fairly light (sorry no way of weighing it at the moment) and balances reasonably well on the strap (probably why the previous owner moved the neck strap button?). Was going to use this for a retro project, but am now needing some cash to put towards a new cabinet. There's a black one on ebay in Germany currently advertised at £495 without a case ( or even strings!), which I think is supremely optimistic. Was £275 - NOW ON EBAY!! Am wanting a straight cash sale only at the moment thanks, so no trades. Would prefer collection / meet up , but will consider posting at your expense etc. The bass is in East Yorkshire, but I do get around a bit with work, so could possibly arrange something. ( during July I'll be in Southport, maybe Brighton, and Poole and Falmouth!) PM me with your email and can send you some more pics. Cheers, Pete.

I always use bronzewounds on my Washburn AB. Usually Elites though had some Adamas strings off ebay which were great too. I just like the overall tone that bronze gives, so never felt the need to change really.

Thats great Jake, much appreciated. Am having a band meeting to discuss this tomorrow (Sat), so before this would be brill. Many thanks, Pete.

Had an enquiry to do a gig in Frankfurt later on this year. Was just wondering if anyone had used any rental companies they could recommend over there? We'll be needing a PA (say 2k, nothing massive) and some backline / drums / keyboards, and just want to price the job up without driving our kit over there etc - so much easier for us to fly and use rented stuff. Any help / advice gratefully received, cheers!
Might be a daft question and probably covered elsewhere, but why did Plan B's bassist have the logo of his bass taped over, was he otherwise in breach of an endorsement deal or something?
FWIW maybe it was some kind of thing about/against Fender, as the guitarist with the 335 was using a Fender amp (poss a 65 Twin Reissue) with the logo blanked off on the speaker cloth and also on the front panel. Strange.......

need a propper valuation for my precision lyte
casapete replied to Eddie Twothumbs's topic in Bass Guitars
I had two! First one was in frost (maybe arctic?)white, with gold hardware . Great bass, although the finish was not particularly durable ,and chipped/cracked quite easily as I remember. Most s/h ones I've seen have appeared like this. Sounded good though (active eq etc) despite having a ravenous appetite for Duracells. It helped to unplug when not playing as I believe the jack activated the battery etc. I actually had the actives modified to extend battery life, which helped tremendously. One of those basses I wish I'd hung on to. Second one was the Deluxe, which was the mahogany finish again with the dreaded gold hardware. Instead of the usual PJ pickups, this had a Precision type pickup along with a rear humbucking type, and also had a mid control too IIRC. Didnt like this one as much as the first (sounded a bit dull, and a bit heavier weight too), so sold it fairly soon after. Gold hardware was standard on both models, although later versions (which kinda morphed into the Mexican made Zone) did feature chrome which to my eyes was a lot better. Most common finish was brown/yellow sunburst, with charcoal/black metallic, white and red being other options. I seem to also remember seeing some foto flame models, often in a rather unusual purple!! As far as I can remember all Precision Lytes were made in Japan. -
